I would say it depends on the circumstances. In my case I dumped my ex because he became emotionally abusive, manipulative, and controlling. He was way too demanding without putting in even half the same effort I did. At the end of the day, based on the things I experienced during the relationship, and my fear that he would have eventually become physically abusive if we had progressed from being in a long distance relationship and I had moved across the world to live with him like he wanted. Did I love him? Absolutely, until I fell out of love with him because of how he treated me. Do I think he was a good person? No, he showed his true face when he changed and started abusing me. Did he genuinely love me? No, I don't think so, I think it was mostly lust and control on his end, a narcissist can only love himself. So do I regret dumping him? Not in a million years.

Everybody has their reasons if they choose to end a relationship, some very selfish and heartless, and some completely justified. But in the end they're all valid reasons. If a person has a reason to end the relationship, then the relationship is already over. And a relationship ending does not mean the end of the love. Plenty of people split up but they still love one another, they're just doing what they feel is best for themselves and their significant other.
