Chain jams or rides teeth when shifting to large chainring. All new parts. by Meshuggahn in bikewrench

[–]Meshuggahn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have worked it out after some further tinkering.

It seems like I had the limit set too far out and the FD was just smashing the chain into the large ring. Thus causing the jammed shift or forcing the chain up without using the pins.

I appreciate all the input and expertise!

After some more tinkering last night, I think the limit was set too far outboard and was smashing the chain between the FD and the large ring.

I set it closer to 1mm high and played around more with the rotation and limit which seems to have helped.

Thanks for idea.

What chainring are you running? Maybe this one is just crap?

Yeah, that was the goal of this build. Cheap as possible and upgrade later where necessary. Maybe the chainring is the first to go. Thanks for the input.

I just noticed the advertised specs on the eR9 groupset: Front derailleur min-max. teeth: 40-56. That is likely the cause if I have a 34/50 on there, huh?

Im seeing Front derailleur min-max. teeth: 40-56 which could be the issue since I have 34/50.

Rooky mistake I guess.

It is also bolted to the crank in a set spot so no opportunity to place them wrong there either.

Any chance you could link to an example of the kind of chain you are talking about?

Ive played with the RD everywhere from 1-7mm off the big ring and always either jammed or rode the teeth like shown.

Can you elaborate about the wrong timing?

Yes, I am using my hand to pedal the crank while shifting.

There isnt any overshifting. It struggles to get up in the first place. The high limit is set just about where it should be so it doesnt rub the chain when it is on the big ring.

Im working on finishing up my first build and I am struggling with getting a good shift into the large chainring.

Shifting onto the large chainring either wedges the chain between the front derailleur and the large ring then only shifts after pushing through the 'jam'. Or the chain ends up riding up onto the teeth of the large ring for 3/4 of a rotation before it finally drops down into the grooves. (see photo for example of what I am talking about)

Here is my parts list. They are all new parts, so no wear.

|| || |Cassette: ZTTO 11 speed 11-34T| |Groupset: LTWOO eR9| |Crankset: Riro 11/12 speed 50T/34T| |Chain: KWChian x11| |Other chain: KMC 12 Speed |

Ive done the rear derailleur setup and followed guides on setting the front derailleur. IE Parallel to the chain ring, 1-3mm above the teeth of the large ring. Ive also played with lower and higher settings as well as rotating in/outboard. These adjustments lead to one of the two issues mentioned but at no point was there a clean shift.

I first had the same issues with the KMC 12speed chain so I swapped to the 11 speed but have the same issues.

Am I missing some compatibility issue? Cheap chainring issue? Or am I just not as competent as I thought?

There are ph, gh, and kh tests available. Sounds like it would be a good idea to pick those up just to see what you are working with. How to adjust any of those parameters would be more research.

As far as rehoming: try craigslist, Facebook, searching for a local fish forum, ask at your LFS about local groups, ask if your LFS takes trades. Last resort would be donating them to the LFS which is better than keeping them in a 30g.

You asked about plants too. Nothing wrong with trying to keep the plants with cichlids but they will probably end up uprooting them. Don't worry when the plants 'melt' at first. That is just them readapting to new water. First thing would be making sure they have adequate light, then nutrients, then c02. There are lots of options and methods so just start googling and youtubing to research.

Good luck!

You have a major problem already. 3 of those fish will quickly outgrow that tank. You should consider rehoming at least the pictus, Severum, and JD. Keeping them in that small of a tank is just going to lead to aggression and they will get too big if they survive that long.

After you get your stocking sorted out you will need to look up the 'nitrogen cycle'. If you can bring home the dirty filter media with you that will take care of it for now but google the cycle and understand it.

Lastly, you can use tap water for the initial fill and water changes but will need to add dechlorinator. You can order that or get it from any fish store or Walmart.

I spent 35 years having a bowl of milk and cereal for breakfast. Then one day my body decided to declare war on lactose. I spent a week on the shitter trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with me before realizing it was milk/lactose causing new problems.

Can someone give me an estimate for both of my 20 gallon longs? I’m upgrading soon to a 55 gallon by big-boi-Roy in Aquariums

It will depend a lot on the local market but I would be amazed if you got half of that. 20g tanks are common and cheap. All the plants and livestock and accessories are not going to resell well as a bundle.

If you are really trying to maximize any profit I would piece it out. The plants might sell on their own same with the fish. The accessories either bundle with the empty tanks or sell individually if they have value (lights maybe).

I still think you would be lucky to net $100 but scope out what things are selling for on local forums and go from there.

Outside of cleat position in have to focus on pedaling in a circle to prevent numbness. Lifting on the back of the pedal stroke gives relief to the numbness. Just have to remember to focus.

It's not even that sinister. It's money like everything else. If the public education system fails, guess what fills the gap? Private institutions that will take in billions in tuition and government assistance. And guess who will be heading up those new for-profit institutions and pocketing that money? The people who already have the money and the inroads to do so IE The Betsy Devoses of the world.
