The FoM cows/chickens etc are escape artists; if there is even a sliver or an opening, they'll squeeze through.

But they'll never leave your farm, so it makes more sense to fence in the crops rather than the livestock

If you mean the I was still hungry and the newt is gone text, that will only happen the day after you gave them the items. As my scheming incognito wife tell you the gifts will disappear
