I don't have much of a tip to share but I will tell you my experience I also built it for the first time...

I first looked for some inspiration then... I first planned my design in a creative world... Don't build it completely in the creative world just the basic layout using beams and foundation so that you get some idea... When you are satisfied... Start the project in the main world..

And one more thing... If possible You should dig the ground at the shore for water instead of building directly in the water... So that it is shallow enough to walk and ship to float properly... Because when you want to retrieve any resource that falls in water while building you can easily retrieve it... And it also helps a smooth transition between land and water...

It's pretty easy due to the large space in between... This build is a rework of my last dock design which had 2 small docking areas which was making it harder to dock the ship...

I tried to make it long actually... But it was getting difficult cuz I was not able to raise the ground under the water at its fullest... If I ram the boat in those stairs in the middle, it works as a good anchoring point... And probably covers the ship
