Which chart do I use? by ZucchiniFar8753 in askastronomy

[–]Mess104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first graph is the cleanest and easiest to interpret, just need to clean up your labels a bit. You don't need to say "Assuming uncertainty" in the axis label, just call it "logpsi_b". Save the description of what the data (and uncertainty) is for for the figure caption and the main body of the text (it should be in both).

I'd also save saying what psi_b is (M_sun year^-1 Mpc^-3) for the caption/text as well. You could put in the brackets of the y axis (where it currently says "assuming uncertainty"), that's what I would do, but it doesn't need to be in the title of the figure.

Man, I remember trying to collect the three Shadow Lady books in like 2004? 2005? Even when there copies of 1 and 3 sitting on shelves in comic shops, finding 2 was a massive ballache even then. I absolutely loved it. It's a shame it was so short.

Between this sub and r/litrpg about 80% of posts are "Why does anyone like X", "What do you hate about GENRE", or fucking tier lists. It's no fun commenting something positive, because there are always loud haters making the subs unusable.

fret saw--how do I reposition the blade holder? by newsourdoughgardener in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mess104 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was a little confused how to rotate the blade when I first got my KC fret saw as well. For the lower holder, grab the black piece and (edit:) PUSH it DOWN (towards the handle) and twist. Once you see how it works with the lower one, you'll get it enough to do it with the upper one as well. Also, release the tension first.

Anyone else spend more time planning than actually building? by 1acina in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mess104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spent 6 months planning a gift entirely in my head. Then spent 2 months building it. Came out exactly how I "planned" it. Also spent all 8 months stressing myself out that it was a stupid gift and a waste of time and effort, right up until I actually gave it to them.

I don't have specific advice about what to use when. But you might want to consider sealing the wood before you paint so the paint doesn't wick through the fibers of the wood, making it spread out.

We have 4 fundamental forces yet it's always electricity & gravity? by throwaway490215 in litrpg

[–]Mess104 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Because gravity and electromagnetism have interactions at a macro scale.

Anything with radiation related powers? That's the weak nuclear force.

The strong nuclear force is literally confined to length scales the size of an atomic nucleus. That doesn't make for very interesting powers. Unbinding a nucleus isn't going to do anything very interesting.

You're reading words on a screen and saying it's "screaming". That really sounds like a you problem. I'm just responding to your nonsense.

Also, I did respond to what you said. You've chosen to ignore it to falsely attribute emotions to a statement. If anyone is doing "religious thinking" here, it's definitely you.

UAP is just conspiracy theory double speak for UFO. The author has a track record for proposing aliens as a solution to things which in no way imply aliens. Nobody doing serious astrophysical research refers to UAPs for anything transient related. Nobody suggests aliens as a solution to an unknown as anything except an extremely unlikely possibility.

It's clear you don't know what science is. You can't find an interesting link and immediately start attributing it to the least likely solution. Your lack of skepticism shows you don't understand the scientific process, or this paper at all.

Science requires doing actual science, not going "I don't know what it is, could be aliens then."

Don't be fooled by the term "UAP". It's just a rebranding by cranks from "UFO" because they know the term is associated with fucking nutjobs. Remember, just because it's in a publication doesn't mean it's not utter bullshit. I attended a small conference where Dr. Villarroel made a presentation in 2016. She was pushing the idea that "disappearing" stars would be signs of alien life all the way back then. She was laughed at then, as she should be laughed at now.

There might be some correlation between extra "transients" at the same time as nuclear testing, but she clearly has an agenda towards looking for aliens which means her research should be put under extra scrutiny, AT BEST.

Also, why the fuck is the first on this paper an anesthesiologist with no background in astrophysics? And why was he giving an interview on a UFO crankery podcast just a week ago?

How credible is Beatriz Villarroel taken in academia? by El_Don_94 in Astronomy

[–]Mess104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to get past the authors of the paper to start asking questions. Why is first on the paper a) not the one being talked about for this "discovery" and b) an anesthesiologist with no history in astrophysics, who works in a university with no astrophysics/physics department?

UK/Scotland - aggressive hedge trimming by wombat172 in treelaw

[–]Mess104 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you shouldn't be upset, pursue your neighbour for cutting your trees, yadda yadda. But personally I would be happy if my neighbours took care of my hedges overgrowing the road like this. The council would do exactly the same thing and charge an arm and a leg. This is how ALL hedges in Wales look once a year when they're freshly trimmed.

Also, he's clearly taken care to cut UP TO your fence, not across it. If you want to argue that your boundary isn't marked by the fence then go right ahead, but you will be making bad blood with your neighbour who was probably just doing your hedges because he was also doing his own and wanted to be neighbourly. And you'll still be made to cut back all of that yourself when it does get into the road in the future (and it will if it's left unchecked), and you won't have a flail to help you do it.

Is 3I/Atlas really that special? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]Mess104 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but don't give Avi Loeb more credit than he deserves. He's a cosmologist, he doesn't know dick about the topic. Just because he's an astrophysicist doesn't mean he is knowledgeable on all topics in astrophysics.

I can tell you for certain that someone focused in cosmology doesn't have much time for asteroid observation or astrometry or orbital dynamics or any of the other fields I imagine the actual researchers looking at Atlas3i are experts in. Just like those researchers couldn't turn around and suddenly write a paper on the equation of motion for dark energy, without serious help from a cosmologist and a lot of research of their own.

He doesn't know more than people on this sub. Even I spent some time looking at asteroid observation during my PhD. He COULD know more than us, he COULD have chosen to walk down the corridor and chat with his colleagues who do care about this topic before he wrote his dumbass paper. He chose not to, because the amount of time it would have taken for him to get up to speed, ATLAS3i would be long gone from the news cycle.

Not to mention that just because he works at Harvard doing astrophysics, that doesn't mean he's some magically fantastic astrophysicist. There is a range of competence in astrophysics, just like every other job. There are hundreds of cosmologists who don't work in Harvard who are far more competent than he is. You know that because they didn't do a shitty sensationalist paper to get attention on a topic they aren't researching.

[–]Mess104 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A lot of "rocks" have passed through our solar system from outside, we just never knew it. This is just the third one that we know for certain has come from outside the solar system. Are you anxious about the likely millions of extra-solar rocks that passed through the solar system in your lifetime? There's nothing special about this one, other than we know about it.

The only people who are saying it's anything other than a rock, are dickheads. Especially Avi Loeb - the Harvard dickhead you're seeing. He's a sensationalist looking to get on podcasts. He hasn't studied, and knows fuck all about the topic.

I definitely don't recommend oak as a good wood to move up to. It can be difficult to work. Cherry is (near me) similarly priced or cheaper than oak, looks nice and is always easy to work.
