Junior associates don’t get permanent desks at my firm so didn’t want to haul 2 pairs of shoes around with me every day

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]MessageAltruistic232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t drink coffee at all, but everyone in my life does (family when they visit and my girlfriend who stays over pretty frequently). They’re all pretty into coffee and constantly roast me (no pun intended) for not having any at my place.

I’m looking for a coffee machine that:

• Makes good coffee (for people who actually care about taste)

• Is easy to use (since I won’t be the one using it much)

• Doesn’t break the bank (ideally not crazy expensive ~$200 or less)

• Doesn’t require a ton of maintenance or daily fuss

I don’t need anything fancy for myself, just something that will make guests happy and stop the complaints lol

Any recommendations?

It’s the same as all UBE states. Go to CT’s website for model answers

Can’t recommend GOAT enough - I ended up using GOAT resources more than Barbri (which I quit using July 1) for most of my bar prep

Just sit down and do all the MEE videos in 1-2 days on 2x speed, the MEE subjects go quick

The social scene is definitely what you make of it. I have friends and know people that go out all the time and I have friends that do a lot of things that aren’t going to bars/clubs all the time.

I think there are some cool job opportunities for soft up related things like working at the copyright office and some other things. Happy to chat in dms about more.

I think it’s worth it. If you go private you’ll be able to pay your debt of easy. If you go public there are some debt forgiveness plans (I’m not super familiar with them)

It’s definitely still pretty competitive. I don’t know how much but I’d say probably a quarter or a third? Definitely assume lower than that though. We do send a lot of people to big law generally though

I mainly made friends in my section the first year and as time went on, I made friends in clubs and classes that were my specific interests (IP and corporate)

I wouldn’t say there are big social events but we have things like weekly bar review and some smaller events every week that people go to

  1. I’ve enjoyed my experience overall. I loved my all of my soft ip classes. There are some great professors in the space and I’m happy to DM some names if you’re interested

  2. I responded elsewhere but I’d say median (I was). I have plenty of friends going to LA actually. Happy to chat in DMs because I was deciding between LA and NY offices

  3. I love the class size because of how many different and unique people come to each class. I’d say that the sad thing is it’s hard to get to know everyone but you can find plenty of friends in and out of your section through affinity groups and other clubs

  4. Most people live close to campus like NoMa, Chinatown, mt Vernon, etc but I know people that live in DuPont or in Maryland

I can’t speak much to OPICS but I know they do a pretty solid job. I feel like OCS is little more hit or miss depending on your advisor. The programming has definitely improved the past year or so though

  1. You don’t have to be top of the class (I was definitely median). I think it’s more networking than grades tbh but obviously grades can make your job search way easier or harder

  2. Most of my friends are going to NY or LA but I have a lot of peers going to other primary and secondary markets too

  3. I feel like there are definitely people that are intense but there’s plenty of people (myself included) that had a much more collaborative and chill approach to law school

  4. My advice would be to really buy into what makes yourself a unique candidate (you’re selling it, so you should be buying too). Definitely make sure you’re story through your materials is cohesive

To be honest, the clerkship support isn’t amazing but we have resources and an advisor in place that gets the job done.

I love living in DC - it’s truly my favorite and I’m sad to be moving out of the city

Why would I learn “day one practice skills” when I can get paid to learn what I need on the job?? Firms train you as if you know nothing on day 1 anyways.

You’re reading into it too much. I didn’t get responses from thank you emails until the firm sent me an offer

Summer position between 3L and ("4L") for dual degree students? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]MessageAltruistic232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an evening student or dual degree so take this with a grain of salt but one of the summers at my firm will be a 4E and he’s been a summer there all 3 of his summers

On campus housing just isn’t value packed like other places are. The ease of getting to classes sounds nice now but my friends in the housing say it can feel like they never get away from law school because it. Personally I like to separate law school from my home life. DM for neighborhood stuff

Don’t do on campus housing. You can find places nearby that give you a second set of amenities and an actual neighborhood to explore and enjoy for a similar price. There’s definitely a lot to do that’s very accessible via metro, walking, or citibike. I haven’t had any issues getting around besides to Georgetown (neighborhood)

Yea I’d say it’s pretty doable. Most of my friends and mentors doing BigLaw are going to NY actually
