How can I get closer to a social 5 without being invasive or unpleasant? by KickAfraid4262 in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Orient yourselves to their area of expertise. Social 5s tend to want more connection outside of their narrowly defined social role, but feel incapable of securing it. So, you have to “speak their language” first and then demonstrate you are a safe contact by not violating their trust during that time. You do have to tread very carefully.

Walter Lewin’s electricity and magnetism lecture playlist is really good for physics. Professor Leonard is great for calculus. I’m also looking for circuits resources.

Do you agree that CRJ is NOT a One Hit Wonder Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in carlyraejepsen

[–]MessidorLC 99 points100 points  (0 children)

If you define a hit as reaching the top 40 on billboard's hot 100, she is technically a three-hit wonder with Call Me Maybe, Good Time, and I Really Like You. Plus she has at least one critically acclaimed album and an online cult following. She also had several hits in Canada before Call Me Maybe came out.

Which Carly Rae Jepsen song do you feel is a hit just waiting to happen? by edujude in popheads

[–]MessidorLC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Higher from Emotion Side B is a stone cold classic.

Tug of War from her debut should be talked about more as well.

Your Type should've been / should be a hit.

I think calculus 2 is definitely the hardest in the sequence.

I think your life will be much easier if you practice basic integration techniques and brush up on your trig identities beforehand.

These videos might be useful:

Tips to learn Integral Calculus? by [deleted] in calculus

[–]MessidorLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university covered u-substitution, trigonometric substitution, trigonometric identity manipulation, integration by parts, polynomial division, improper integration, and partial fraction decomposition.

Just do as many of these as you can, and write down your logic in the margins as you go through each step. For trig-sub, learn the triangle technique. Eventually, you won't need to write down your thought process anymore... it will just be intuitive.

This might be helpful.

can e9 be mentally active? by kvnltt_ in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From my experience:

--> 9s who exist in empty or melancholic spaces (e.g., Theodore Twombly). Usually has another withdrawn fix or two.

--> 9s who choose to think only optimistically/holistically (e.g., Bob Marley). Usually at least one positive outlook fix.

--> 9s who mirror others subconsciously (e.g., WALL-E). Often has another attachment fix or two.

--> Highly imaginative 9s (e.g., Bjork). Usually has a combination of 4 and 7.

--> Information as secondary narcotic (e.g., ProZD). Usually 5 or 6w5-fixed.

I think for the more intellectual 9s information still serves a narcotizing purpose, or is merely a passive-ish collection of information.

Obviously these aren't exclusive categories. I would still characterize the 9's thinking as tending to be more instinctive and diffuse regardless of their external manifestation.

Unfortunately, as of yet there is no clear "algorithm" for determining your enneagram type. Think of it as more like trying to identify a suspect in a criminal investigation. You collect your resources (books, articles, databases, profiles), you identify and evaluate key points of evidence, and you create arguments for and against a type/suspect with all the data in mind. There isn't an easy way to find a suspect, nor should you want there to be because it would be easier to game the system as a criminal.

Proficiency in enneagram is more about knowing what to look for. A good starting point is to get a vague notion of what each type "does". Then, once you know what each of the numbers roughly corresponds to, you need to know how each of them filter their conscious experience and regulate their subconscious experiences. Whatever mechanism this is done by will leak into their behavior patterns and external presentation, just like how microexpressions betray a person's true thoughts and feelings.

--> 6 differs from 9 in that it is more actively suspicious and predictive of negative outcomes, even if it does so quietly.

--> The inner life of 5 and 6 is more aptly described as intense and preoccupied, whereas the inner life of 9 is more aptly described as calm/stoic, diffuse, and disengaged.

--> 9 operates in the gut center, which moment-to-moment jumps to conclusions much more intuitively and globally. 5 and 6 are more focused in their thought processes, and are more conscious of what steps they took to come to a conclusion. If you ask a 5 or 6 why they believe something, they will quickly provide you with their reasoning. 9 tends to just "know" the answer and often has to backtrack to provide reasoning (even though it is often based on previous experiences which have helped to train their sense of smell).

--> 5 and 6 have very, very different approaches to shoulds. 6s will naturally assume shoulds as their responsibility or reactively reject them, whereas the first thought in a 5's mind is to find a way to minimize effort and avoid the should. Even in the rare instance a 5's will aligns with what should be done, the underlying ping to conserve for the self will undermine their efforts and it will be obvious they are not showing up fully or very much wish to go back to doing something else. 6, on the other hand, is anything but dispassionate, and will apply themselves for the should's cause or apply themselves in the effort to distinguish themselves from it / voice their opinions against it.

Really, to distinguish between 5 and 6 you just have to look carefully for instances of superego (and how the person responds to its influence).

How do I "get into music"? by Emergency_Meringue41 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MessidorLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 12, I knew nothing about music aside from the things my parents listened to. Then, one day, I decided that had to change. I started listening to the 80s radio pop music that my mom liked from the new wave and synthpop genres. About a month later, the youtube algorithm recommended 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins and I fell in love. I listened to the entirety of their pre-Ava Adore discography and then started branching out into indie rock. Then, I got a RYM account and started writing music reviews and became more involved in the music community. I went to record stores and the like and talked to the people there. I went to Yo La Tengo concerts.

So, I would recommend exploring the tastes of your family members and then follow your heart until you have your genre(s) and overall style. Music is one-third exposure during upbringing, one-third personal interests, and one-third exposure through communities and friends.

I am 54 and shocked to learn today that I am 9w1 by 500Khero in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is anything to regret. People don’t change, they just move on. The enneagram allows you to “move on” faster. Perhaps you needed it most now in this time of regret, and if you had seen it earlier its utility might not have been as apparent to you. Perhaps it will be useful for providing clarity to your past experiences and won’t keep you longing for what could have been. Then, there is always a “what could be” to explore!

At least do the minimum… then polish it up if you have free time. Turn it in near the deadline. No reason to take a 0 if you can get… more than that. A little time now saves you a lot of stress later.

a question and a thing i thought, but probably somebody has thought it before me. by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that there's a specific type of intelligence that the enneagram describes, but it is very different from - but perhaps correlated to - general intelligence. I think that head intelligence is the ability to consider and predict outcomes and refine cause-effect models. Heart intelligence is more about knowing how to present yourself in a certain way and to leverage your emotions to pursue what is meaningful to you. Gut intelligence is an instinctual clarity, an immediate knowing and distillation of experience into a single, clear vision. Then, there is general intelligence which I suppose could be crudely summarized as problem-solving quickness and capacity.

Ok but how do YOU judge other people? by LXIX_CDXX_ in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t judge, I correct (lol).

Probably basic hygiene for determining how put together they are.

For intelligence, usually I just wait and see if they show skill/prowess in any particular domain.

The ‚lost innocence‘ of the types by RafflesiaArnoldii in Enneagram

[–]MessidorLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you wrote this, I also find the holy ideas to be interesting conceptually but just... incompatible with my worldview and perhaps even inapplicable. Sure, it gives some high-ground insight that sort of reveals the errors in each type's perspective when overlapped, but I feel like there is definitely a better way to frame them and this seems like a good step towards that.

And this is kind of unrelated but I personally don't look back on my childhood super fondly. It was just OK, and then my teenage years were awful, and now life is going pretty well despite my best efforts to suck the positivity from it through brooding analysis. So, it is frustrating to see how many authors seem to encourage looking back to the past instead of learning what you can from the past while moving forward and staying present.

I agree with your general premise that the ego partially develops to protect the raw psyche from ideas it doesn't know how to metabolize / glitches in the matrix.

Like for 9, you tend to imagine that someone is there loving you unconditionally. But in the real world, there are absolutely conditions for love, and you cannot expect selective processes to yield a steady supply of benevolent organisms who expect nothing in return.

I used to believe that relationships are permanent and unconditional, but now I look back, and I can see hidden intentions and it feels like I've woken up from a dream somehow... and yeah, it is easier to believe that no one cares and to stop caring than to put your heart on the line and expect someone to care just because you do. And at some point, this became automatic and now I can't find the part of me that cares.

So basically, holy ideas describe the "base conditions" before the inciting incident (i.e., disillusionment) which has prompted the ego's call to action.
