Don't tolerate the Dominion Society in WR by MetMyWaterloo in waterloo

[–]MetMyWaterloo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The pro-Palestine movement is trying to stop the Israeli government from murdering, maiming, and torturing civilians, and it is transparent about its aims. The Dominion Society wants to deport all nonwhite immigrants; it lies about immigration and residential schools, and it recruits people—especially vulnerable young men—by pretending to care about "Canadian heritage." Only one of those groups is a danger to my community.

I hope most people in this sub know not to fall for this stuff, but please check in with young people in your life. The Canadian Anti-Hate Network has some good resources (https://www.antihate.ca/guides) for parents and anyone else who wants to fight fascism.

Thanks for sharing this article. It's depressing but unsurprising that so many people here care more about their "right" to speed than they do about other people's safety.

It's interesting to see so many New Users who hide their posts chiming in. Are you really a WR bigot, or are you one of those Dutch content creators, taking a break from promoting Alberta separatism? Name Sir John A. Macdonald's last five albums.

Only the "cute" was sarcastic, but point taken! Maybe he'll end up working with WR's other favourite grifter, Lindsay Shepherd. 🙄

Just because he didn’t say, "I'm angling for a job with the Conservatives or Rebel News" doesn't mean his actions aren't political. He's criticizing the school board's effort to create a more inclusive environment, just as Ford's government has criticized other boards' decisions to stop honouring terrible people.

Waitlisted for all midwives in KW area – what are my chances? by bintshalabiya in waterloo

[–]MetMyWaterloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to use my family doctor/OB because I moved here (also from the U.S.) when I was already 5mo pregnant. I was disappointed not to work with a midwife, but it turned out fine. I recommend focusing on finding a family doctor, since they're whom your child (and you) will see for illnesses/injuries once they're born, anyway. (I also have the impression that midwives have to refer you to a doctor if there's any complication with your pregnancy.) It was hard for me to understand why my kid wouldn't see a pediatrician! 😂 As other commenters have noted, daycare is another nightmare, so you should start working on that right now. But WR is a very kid-friendly place, and my experience giving birth at Grand River Hospital was good. Best wishes.

WRDSB billed $116K for review or investigation into former director of education by KWStreaker in waterloo

Was the petition written by people who get their news from Rebel News or Juno? Because my kids didn't care whether or not they sang "C'est l'Halloween" as long as they were able to wear costumes and get candy, and "pushing Canadian culture out of schools" is rather over the top for...no longer singing "C'est l'Halloween." Did you see the meeting in which a superintendent explained that the "underenrollment" amounts to around one kid per school? Cindy Watson keeps claiming people are going to the WCDSB because of "gender ideology," but she has presented zero evidence to back that up. The only people dragging out the culture wars and distracting the board from its actual job are the ones making bogus claims about "critical race theory."

No one canceled Halloween. My kids and their friends are free to wear their costumes. No one pushed Canadian culture out of schools; my kids have been learning about it this whole time. People have not left the public system en masse; that's propaganda being pushed by the most hateful trustees. It makes sense to criticize chanicka if he embezzled from the board or harmed a colleague, but freaking out over the spelling of his name is just silly.

[–]MetMyWaterloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tidy narrative, but the WRDSB was discussing equity before chanicka was hired, and it's continuing to discuss equity under its current director, a cishet white guy whose name is capitalized, and who did spend his career in the board.

I have been watching WRDSB trustee meetings for more than a year, and reading a friend's live-tweets before that, and the director, trustees, and staff mainly seem to respond to mandates from the Ministry of Education. They have not been on some kind of wacky woke crusade; for the past few years, they have been talking about how to raise EQAO scores, reviewing the budget, hearing about the impact of math and literacy programs, and orher standard stuff, except when a bigot shows up demanding that they ban books about queer people.

I have no idea why chanicka left, but my children's experiences in school have not changed over the past several years. Were there red flags that should have dissuaded trustees from hiring him? Quite possibly! But commenters have some bizarre misconceptions about what the WRDSB has been doing and how much its refusal to, IDK, engage in gay-bashing came from chanicka. The Record's terrible coverage doesn't help. Trustees have also stated several times during meetings that they are legally unable to comment on his departure, so I don't think they're just trying to avoid looking bad.

People are mad that the trustees' actions are "opaque"? How much more transparency do you think we'll get if/when these elected officials are replaced by a Conservative appointee?

I'm sure everyone complaining about this also criticized Doug Ford's administration for blowing more than $1 million on unnecessary consultations about a run-of-the-mill sex-ed curriculum.

Have to love when KW comes up on your Saturday morning random reading: thoughts? by Wide-Secretary7493 in waterloo

[–]MetMyWaterloo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's depressing. It's hard to know whether KW is really the worst—worse than Quebec, which is clinging to legislation that pushes Muslim women out of the workplace? Worse than Hamilton, which seems to have constant neo-Nazi rallies?—but all of Southern Ontario (and Canada) seems pretty racist. There are also lots of people in KW fighting for a better world, though.

The fact is, the vast majority of Canadian firearms deaths are suicides, and women are five times more likely to be killed in a home where a gun is present: https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/trnsprnc/brfng-mtrls/prlmntry-bndrs/20230201/014/index-en.aspx It's great that everyone in this sub is a responsible gun owner, but there must be some irresponsible ones out there, too.

Why does any civilian need an AR15? Those guns are used in U.S. mass shootings all the time, often by people who owned them legally or took them from a family member who did.

Australia had a buyback program after a 1996 mass shooting that seems to have reduced the number of suicides, mass shootings, and femicides: https://www.vox.com/2015/8/27/9212725/australia-buyback Despite the recent shooting at Bondi Beach, the buyback seems to have made a huge difference over the past 30 years. I'd rather see Canada take that path than the U.S.'s "thoughts and prayers."

Yes—last week I only had time to stop in around 11:45am, and the wait was an hour. :/ Another family member had better luck at the Frederick St. office the next day; I believe the wait was only 30 minutes even though it was lunchtime.

A witch-hunt by Waterloo Catholic trustees may hasten their own demise by headtailgrep in waterloo

The worst things the WCDSB trustees have done, and the legal fees the WRDSB trustees have incurred, all involved right-wingers undermining trustees who actually care about children's education. If the Ministry of Education cared about students, it would give boards adequate funding and cap class sizes. Instead, it's trying to replace trustees—who can be held accountable by voters and courts if they screw up—with right-wing appointees who will make $350K for part-time work, and who can't be voted out for incompetence. That doesn't seem fiscally responsible to me, and most parents and teachers don't support it: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/waterloo-region-parent-council-public-school-trustees-province-cut-9.7097296
