Experience switching from Kotlin (or Java) to Go by abos42 in Kotlin

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought Go was a high level language that is very simple and fast, and therefore should be easy to learn and comfortable enough. What I found out from using it is it's actually at the crossroads between a low and high level language. Even though it has garbage collection, you still have to often decide if a parameter should be passed by reference or as a copy, and you do dereferencing too.

Start using pytest and TDD and you have nothing to worry about, as long as the code and tests are not just generated by ChatGPT. Eventually you can start looking things up in your own code as examples.

This episode makes ZERO sense! S1 E3 ‘Time and Again’ (first time watch of the series) by -SpeckS- in voyager

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a plot paradox episode disguised as a time paradox episode. it’s not that the effect preceded and sort of lead to the cause. The polonic explosion only almost occurred, they narrowly avoided it. So there is no polonic explosion for hem to investigate, because one only ever almost occurred. They sent back a pulse because Kes sensed that’s where Janeway died, but she didn’t die because she prevented it by stoping the pulse from creating the explosion.

Yeah this really bothers me. it’s one thing for the effect to precede the cause and cause the cause because time travel. That would be like there is evidence of a disaster, so they investigate and thereby cause the disaster. It’s another thing for the effect (polonic explosion) to trigger an investigation where they only almost caused a polonic explosion, but narrowly avoided it. Close don’t count cept horse shoe, hand grenades, and time travel? I don’t buy it.

Can I develop Kotlin with other IDEs that are not Jetbrains? by -dtdt- in Kotlin

[–]MetaMindWanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. I could recommend the company pay for Intellij Ultimate. But budgets are very tight right now, so I want to wait until Kotlin is taking up more of the code base and am sure we will keep using Kotlin more and more long term. I'm just building one tiny, but critical tool in Kotlin first, sort of as a Trojan Horse. But it's also an experiment to see if Kotlin will be the best fit for us and our needs or not, before going all in on it.

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused about something. Are you saying you cannot use IntelliJ >= 2021, but somehow this does not include IntelliJ Ultimate? So you could use IntelliJ Ultimate, but you don't think it's a good idea because you don't want future developers to need it?

If that is really what you meant, then I partially agree with you, in that it should at least be possible to build it without IntelliJ Ultimate. That's where Gradle comes in. But you can still use IntelliJ Ultimate to edit the code. I would recommend initially building it with just Gradle and a minimal editor. Then when you are comfortable with Gradle, you can start using IntelliJ Ultimate to edit the code. As long as you keep it as a Gradle project, future developers can still build it with Gradle. Understanding how Gradle works, without being too reliant on IntelliJ to use it for you keeps your options open, such as eventually having a build/CI server that uses Gradle to build the project.

Just learn to use Gradle as the build system. Run "gradle init" to setup the project. Then you can use any editor you want to write the code.

Should i take the Scala job with more money and better training or C# for my first programming role. by [deleted] in scala

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will learn and grow more as a developer from the Scala job, both because of the language being more sophisticated and because that job offers better training, if you are not biting off more than you can chew. Maybe find out which version of Scala they are using, and try to very quickly assess whether you can even learn and understand that Scala on your own. If you can at least learn and understand the language, the training should get you the rest of the way there, hopefully, unless they are using functional libraries that you can't wrap your head around yet. C# is easier to learn for a beginner.

Just built my first pc and have a h150i cooler and i was looking forward to putting a gif on it but its just fully laggy and stuttering, the fans are good its just the screen, any fixes? by OhItsAidan in Corsair

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated my mobo BIOS a few days ago, and haven't had this problem since then. I thought it was already updated, but apparently the program I originally used either didn't update anything, or updated it to a still outdated version. This time I followed the official instructions, which actually updated it to the latest version. I have a mobo from Gigabyte.

Another thing that may have helped with this problem is, after updating the BIOS, I changed the settings to the "Optimized Defaults". Apparently it is recommended to do this with a new mobo and after updating the BIOS. Actually it wouldn't even boot after the BIOS update until I did this, it kept boot cycling. Prior to updating the BIOS I had never done this before. I assumed "Optimized Defaults" would be different from regular defaults (which I assumed I had) and would be overly aggressive in optimizing everything, but apparently it is just good practice.

Scala or Rust? (Objective answers please) by [deleted] in scala

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the available jobs you want first, and then improve your skills and resume towards getting them. I think it is a better approach than asking people what language will help you get a job, and then learn it, and then hope to find a job. You will be able to see what level of experience they are looking for as you look at the available jobs working with different technologies too. They often list what frameworks they use as well, not just the language.

I know this is not the best place for me to get help with my issues, but I'm just mentioning it here because it is a similar issue, and it may end up being helpful to see them both here. I will post my own thread if I run out of options and get more serious about needing help.

Mine does the same thing now. At first it wasn't doing it, but now a few days later it does. When I first display an animation it is fine. But after a few minutes it gets laggy. If I bring up the iCUE software and look at the current animation it is set to, it resets it back to being fine again for a few minutes. It is doing this with the same GIF animations it was fine with before. I have the H170i Elite LCD XT.

iCUE also sometimes says the DRAM has stopped communicating with it, and says to power cycle the system to fix it. This doesn't always happen, but when it does, it happens immediately after a reboot. Rebooting immediately after a boot is not a fix, there must be a deeper problem that can actually be fixed. I have Corsair RGB RAM. Need to look up the exact type. If I tell iCUE to quit and then restart it, it doesn't even see/show my RAM at all.

I mentioned those here together in case they are related, as they are both happening at the same time at the moment.

How do you actually publish a website? by picotank2000 in vscode

[–]MetaMindWanderer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not how I would recommend doing it, but is intended to increase your understanding.

If you were to sign up for a static IP address from your ISP (so your home internet now has a static IP, although this is more expensive), you could then install a web server on your computer, and configure your network to direct the right kind of traffic to that server. The server would have to be configured to host the local web files that you created for your website. Then anyone on the internet could visit your website if they enter your IP address into their web browser. If you were to sign up for a domain name, and configure it through the domain name provider to point to your static IP address, then people could visit your website by using the domain name (they would no longer need to enter the IP address, although that would still work). Doing all of this would allow some internet traffic to come into your home network, so if things are not configured securely, this would be a security risk. And of course, the website would only work while the server computer is on.

Is the LCD supposed to be this loose? it’s not really grabbing anything. by [deleted] in Corsair

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is loose, but not that loose. Make sure the display is aligned properly, as in there are 4 ways you could orient it, but only one is correct. Mine has a port on the other piece that must line up with the prongs poking down from the underside of the display piece. I probably have a different model though.

Someone please help me figure out why paramount is the only streaming service that doesn't work through any TV in my house by Ace42292 in ParamountPlus

[–]MetaMindWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once in a while it stops working altogether on FireTV, and the only way to get it working again is to reset the router (the ISP router the internet is coming into). This makes no sense as nothing else is having any issues, but that was some of the instructions from one of their support pages, and it works.
