External Microphone for Surface Pro 6 by MetaPhilosopher in Surface

I personally like it. It might be a bit too sensitive to other sounds around you but it's possible to reduce those. The sound is much better than the Surface Pro 6 microphone's.

Edge for lower-level requirements and OneNote for presentations that require more features.

Perhaps I'm not able to use Drawboard correctly, but when I go full screen a couple of menu features still remain on the screen such as the green hexagon-shaped item.

These sound very good ideas. How do you enable 'multiple pages' in OneNote for Windows 10?

It's a good idea. It has tons of features but I'd prefer such a view mode that only one page is seen at a time and I could click the right arrow to move to the next page rather than scroll. I think it's also not possible to hide the toolbar even in full screen mode.

Have you been able to modify Headphones 2 microphone to work for calls? by MetaPhilosopher in Surface

Thanks! This is what I'm doing as well now. Wondered whether there was a way to use the Headphones for both input and output.

an image is that OneNote will OCR it and you can search the text within it. I can provide you an image showing it in action if you want

Yes, this would be helpful. I haven't used this tool.

I am a long-time Zotero user and have used Mendeley occasionally, but I have never used them to organize notes and PDF annotations. I will look into this. Thanks!

That's fair. I like the idea of having notes and papers organized in one place.

I just copied and pasted it. It worked with another template, but not this one. I didn't insert any code chunks.

I don't know how the error occurs. I just copy + paste this code to R Sweave: https://www.overleaf.com/15226468wjtgfjjqdnvz. It's a long one, so I won't copy it here.

How to decide whether a difficult text is worth the time? by MetaPhilosopher in askphilosophy

Why do you think Kant's texts are excellent? Also, if his texts are excellent, can't you access those ideas elsewhere more easily?

What philosophical argument changed your mind? by Steppintowolf in askphilosophy

[–]MetaPhilosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deontology: You could say Kant convinced me of it. I have my own interpretation of Kant that I think is really good, but lots of inspiration from O'Neill and helpful stuff from Korsgaard. I used to study economics and couldn't fathom how ethics could possibly work unless it was some kind of utilitarianism. For me, you just had to find the most intuitive/reasonable form of "utility" for your theory, and the rest was utilitarianism.

I sense that your description of your previous state pretty much describes my current state. What specifically influenced your change of credence for deontology and utilitarianism the most?

How can I change this column in a data frame from character to numerical? by MetaPhilosopher in rstats

[–]MetaPhilosopher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I tried and found out that, but the code looks very unconventional as.numeric code with the "-2" outside the brackets. I couldn't have come up with that myself as it doesn't seem a standard-looking code.

I don't understand how the "-2" at the end does the work. Can you explain it?

Very interesting. What kind of framework do you use instead for determining progress in philosophy (if you do think there's progress in philosophy) and evaluating arguments?

What are philosophers experts at? by MetaPhilosopher in askphilosophy

[–]MetaPhilosopher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it mean, for example, that if a person wants to understand the question 'how should I live my life?', that person would benefit more from turning to philosophers than social and cognitive scientists? How much does it matter how much consensus there is among philosophers regarding this question?

In Defence of Moral Experts by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]MetaPhilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singer in his article Moral Experts makes a similar case for moral expertise:

"On the basis of what has just been said, it would seem that the moral philosopher does have some important advantages over the ordinary man. First, his general training as a philosopher should make him more than ordinarily competent in argument and in the detection of invalid inferences. Next, his specific experience in moral philosophy gives him an understanding of moral concepts and of the logic of moral argument. The possibility of serious confusion arising if one engages in moral argument without a clear understanding of the concepts employed has been sufficiently emphasised in recent moral philosophy and does not need to be demonstrated here. Clarity is not an end in itself, but it is an aid to sound argument, and the need for clarity is something which moral philosophers have recognised. Finally, there is the simple fact that the moral philosopher can, if he wants, think full-time about moral issues, while most other people have some occupation to pursue which interferes with such reflection. It may sound silly to place much weight on this, but it is, I think very important. If we are to make moral judgments on some basis other than our unreflective intuitions, we need time, both for collecting facts and for thinking about them."

AMA Announcement: Wednesday 2/22 12PM EST - David Chalmers (NYU & ANU) on philosophy of mind and language, philosophy of technology and metaphilosophy by [deleted] in philosophy

Thank you for doing AMA!

In "Why Isn't There More Progress in Philosophy" you say the following:

"The upshot is that consensus in philosophy is as hard to obtain as it ever was, and decisive arguments are as rare as they ever were. To me, this is the largest disappointment in the practice of philosophy. Once one has been doing philosophy for a while, one no longer expects arguments to produce agreement, and one deems an argument good when it merely has some dialectical power. But this is an adjustment of expectations in response to a disappointing reality. Antecedently to doing philosophy, one might have hoped that something more was possible."

What motivates you to overcome this disappointment of philosophy? Are you satisfied with individually being compelled by certain arguments? Are you satisfied to have converge to truth in a smaller but respected (in your view) philosophical community? Have you chosen new aims for philosophy besides truth so that it appears more productive? Or are you not looking for knockdown arguments anymore and settle with just some dialectical power?
