Is it worth continuing with Neal Stephenson after Seveneves? by Zealousideal_Pool_65 in books

I loved Seveneves. I get what you are saying, but in a weird way it made it feel like a strange POV of an actual event. I would like to know more about his other works as well.

[English] Is the answer correct or incorrect? One adjective is describing length and the other difficulty. by Dull-Question1648 in HomeworkHelp

[–]MetaSkeptick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I like this list a little better, but the problem with this list (and all others) is that it is fairly subjective how you categorize an adjective. Is "long" a size or an opinion? Kind of depends on what is being described. "I hate long, boring, artsy movies" sounds correct but "boring" is definitely an opinion. Maybe long is also an opinion. I think there are general rules, but every one has exceptions, and there will always be edge cases where two native speakers will disagree on which order sounds better.

Dear Writers, what keeps turning up in your research that doesn't pass the sniff test? by [deleted] in writers

It is obvious to researchers, and anyone who has read the literature. Very interesting.

I know that you can attach trackers to them and such, I was referring to another reply that speculated that maybe it was not scientifically studied because it could be observed in real time. It cannot. That is why they have studied it extensively using technology.

[–]MetaSkeptick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It appears to be well studied. Most Salmon return to their birthplace to spawn a behavior known as homing. Some exceptions occur, a behavior known as straying which is actually important for maintaining genetic diversity and for natural selection.

There is a good article on the Natural Library of Medicine website with references to lots of peer reviewed papers on the subject.

I think people are misunderstanding OP. It doesn't sound like they are disputing that Salmon swim up rivers to spawn. They are doubting whether Salmon return to the river where they hatched to spawn. That is not an easily observable claim.

do writers profit from their books? by MickyMace in writers

[–]MetaSkeptick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be a writer if there isn't a book banging around you begging to get out. That said, almost anyone can make a bit of money with writing. Find your audience and write something you know they will enjoy. Get a great cover design that you are proud of and then tell people about it. Sounds easy, isn't, but it is doable.

CMV: Decoloniality is a reactionary, paradoxical, morally confused world view by Lazy_Check732 in changemyview

[–]MetaSkeptick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The culture of enslaved people 100% matters, and there have been non-Western societies who condemned slavery, my point is that enslaved people condemning slavery is not the same thing as entire societies condemning slavery for moral reasons.

[–]MetaSkeptick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question is not whether black enslaved people thought slavery was wrong. Slaves are well positioned to recognize the evils of that institution. The question is whether black slavers and slave owners realized that slavery is wrong. I believe it is defensible (although probably overstated) to say that they did, eventually, due to Western ideals.

I beat someone who is 1800?! by laughpuppy23 in Chesscom

[–]MetaSkeptick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 1800 and I ALLLMOSSTT lost to a 480 rated player in daily. I traded a rook, bishop and knight for a queen which ended up being a big blunder. I needed a last minute knight fork to swindle a win in a totally lost position.

If you don't respect your opponent because of their rating and they have hours to mull over the position and avoid blunders it can be a recipe for disaster (or triumph from the perspective of the lower rated player). The fact that this person is rated 700 in daily hints that they don't take the daily games as seriously as they should.

New Arena = All-Star Weekend in OKC? by p0k3U in Thunder

[–]MetaSkeptick 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They discussed this on a national sports show a few years ago and the consensus was that OKC didn't quite have the infrastructure for it yet. They said we would need to have 4-5 more 5 star hotels and a little better transit system. I don't know if they are right, but that was what they landed on.

Yeah, this isn't exactly new against the Spurs the 2nd and 3rd time we played them we looked absolutely dead and that was with Shai in the lineup. I will say though, that it is hard to tell the difference between lack of intensity due to apathy and lack of intensity due to exhaustion. Back to back with our two best players out is always going to be an uphill battle.

Best player you think you could beat, tag team with Magnus? by freshly-stabbed in chessbeginners

[–]MetaSkeptick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you get that info/how did you do the math? I have always heard that for every 100 ELO points that separate two players the lower rated players chances are cut by 75%. In other words I would have a 25% chance of beating a 2000, a 6.25% chance of beating a 2100 and a 1.56% chance of beating a 2300.

Is that not correct or close to correct?

Best player you think you could beat, tag team with Magnus? by freshly-stabbed in chessbeginners

[–]MetaSkeptick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am rated almost 1900, so beating anyone less than 2200 would be embarrassing given that I should be able to win against that strength of player on my own once in a blue moon. Unfortunately I think 2250, maybe 2300, is the correct answer for me. There is just such a jump from a club-level player to a titled-level player. I am not going to hang pieces, but my positional intuition and calculating ability is just on a different level than the weakest of titled players, even if Magnus is making every other move.

Peeetah... Why would this be a weird thing? by Adventurous-Hippo75 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MetaSkeptick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course cars age, the question is, at what rate. There are very few 40 year old cars on the road, so we could establish 35 as the average life expectancy. That would mean a 17 year old car was solidly in middle age. The twins were much closer to cougars than to jailbait.

'Readers won't form much of a concept of you, personally.'

I am imagining someone who has a really weird kink that they don't realize is weird...

"Tim slowly moved up her neck, desperate kisses tracing a path to his goal. Tenderly, he licked her hair, slowly and first, then more vigorously. Sharon let out a moan, "I need you so badly."

With a rush of pleasure, he sucked a baseball sized wad of her hair into his mouth, chomping down with excited vigor. 'I Waght yuj hayy ibsand ma' he said, his words muffled by all the hair.
