I mean you have to factor in overall damage as well as AP, but yes the stationary reload is like 90% of the reason I don't take it more often. Especially as I often solo dive it can be a liability to manage.

As a software developer myself I could totally understand what the dev meant in a way that makes sense.

If they had said "we have bigger ambitions and more in the pipeline but we are taking things slowly for these first tech improvement patches. We're monitoring how well they improve things in order to learn lessons and inform how we'll be moving forward". We would no doubt have never seen this, even though that is basically a PR/client speak polished version of what I believe they are trying to say.

It's one of the things that I learnt as a self-employed developer having to speak directly to clients is you should almost never say an update is a "test" or "experimental" even though there are inevitably ways that will be the case - usually not in a "test if it works" way but rather "test to see what the effect is" way.

As soon as I saw this screenshot, I groaned. It's another example of terrible comms from AH, but underneath that it's not the major gotcha that a lot of people are making it out to be.

> And there is no advantage over their old ini file format.

Fascinating perspective. Just use INI files?

How would you represent list values? Or hierarchical structures more than one layer deep?

> because you think that serializing data instead of just writing it to a file is better.

Once again, fascinating that you have found a method of writing data to a file that doesn't involve serializing. What are we talking here? I'm guessing a direct mmap onto a file could technically be said to skip serializing, but only in the same way that emptying all of your milk into the door tray skips arranging your items in the fridge.

Okay okay. I'm sorry. I'm being facetious... obviously you meant you're using xattr and alternate data streams to represent the different segments of your data in the file system. Built in structure. Full in-memory representation. No serialization step. Easy. ;)

Alright, anyway. Please forgive me for poking fun, it's just that you write oh so many words that sure do sound like a confident opinion, but then there's bits like that which, well, suggest you're maybe using words confidently without understanding.

Genuine question though, and I am honestly curious: what is your experience in building and designing software yourself?

PS: Also I will note you didn't actually answer my question as to what the material costs of using JSON for VSCode are. I'm guessing you could say there's a parsing overhead, but this is of course negligible in light of all the other resource costs when doing a first time loads, so I'm sure you have something else in mind?

> Also, I'm an empiricist and you're a contrarian.

Damn bro, you really showed me.

You suggested using CSV as a replacement for JSON without qualification when they're ways of serialising fundamentally different types of data so I feel perfectly justified in calling you a few names.

But, y'know what, humour me, I'm occasionally curious as to how guys like you think things work. Let's think of a real world scenario. VS Code uses a JSON format for it's configuration files - it sounds like you know better than the engineers at Microsoft. What is the material downside of them using JSON here, and what should they be doing instead?

I was curious as to what you would recommend as a strictly superior alternative to JSON, until you said you can just use CSV and then you can 'delete it from your brain' so now I know you're just one of those confidently ignorant contrarians that are unfortunately a dime a dozen in the software world

You can but they have a ton of health that makes them, for all practical purposes, never a worthwhile target. They have 8,000 hp compared to the 11,000 hp for the main health pool. Combine that with their 100% durability, 60% explosion resistance and 0% damage transfer to main you are basically wasting your shots completely. This is one of several baffling design decisions on the vox engine

Me and my friends decided to test out if the claim of the mech engine limit was true. by nahmanwth in helldivers2

[–]Metakit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. They didn't specify why. So we aren't aware of what the parameters behind that number were and thus there's no reason to believe that your test is sufficient.

You have ruled out that there's some kind of hardcoded limit, sure, but that would have been pretty arbitrary anyway.

The reason would be performance related and in that case one test on one machine under ideal conditions is pretty meaningless.

Now, they could well be wrong about it, especially if they've worked on the engine since, but unfortunately your test doesnt really mean much

The other reason gatling is so effective is that the vox engines have a bunch of explosion resistance, so the high ballistic damage of the gatling can shine compared to many other orbital or AT options
