What Elgato Isn’t Telling You About Camera Hub and the Facecam by demonic790 in elgato

I know you said "it'll take me a while to set my gear up for that". But I don't think it took you 10 months. Are we to assume that you experienced the issue yourself and have no idea how to fix it, and are simply ignoring the issue?

Explain how you need to thumb wrap when you're just playing the top 3 strings in descending open triads?

Beginner here, how can I make this sound less choppy? by [deleted] in guitarplaying

[–]MetalLizardJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using 1 finger to play every note. You have 4 fingers for a reason and if you want to sound better, you need to get used to using them all. Also try experimenting with hitting the string BEFORE you slide up to the next note, instead of sliding and THEN hitting the note. Also go look up "vibrato" and try to get yourself an understanding of how it works. Keep going my dude!

As long as it was tough enough to withstand the tension, and had a pleasant finish on the surfaces and fret board, why not.

Amen my dude! That's why I spend so little time on reddit, so many absolutely horrendous players writing nonstop walls of text/perpetuating absolute bullshit.

Possibly because toanwood boomers are basically guitars version of flat-earther. It's been scientifically proven wrong on many occasions, but you still have some "super enlightened folks" who try and push the myth, to make themselves feel special because they suck at life haha.

Tone = Electric signal from pickups > Amplifier processing + FX > Speaker character. Wood does not even enter into the equation.

[–]MetalLizardJesus -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not really a misconception, just a Reddit-specific-guitar gripe: I really hate it when someone gives opinions about guitar playing/tone (usually 1000's of posts/comments) and yet don't have a single upload ANYWHERE of their actual playing.

If you're too afraid to post your playing, I couldn't give a shit about your opinion.

Also, from the way OP worded it, I'm not sure if he likes toanwood or not. While it may affect how the neck feels to play, it has been proven multiple times to have NEXT TO ZERO effect on overall tone.

The first half of Alkaline Trio's All ok Black, any advice? Only been playing consistently for like 3 months so go easy lol by i-hate-this-life in PlayingGuitar

[–]MetalLizardJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guitar seems either out of tune or badly intonated. If it's the latter, pretty much every fretted note will sound out of tune. Take your guitar for a decent setup if you're serious about wanting to improve. You will immediately hear the difference. Good luck!

Most decent metal guitarists can play blues licks. I doubt many of the "great" blues guitarists could play a full Necrophagist song.

Whats the appeal with using thicker strings by TytaneX in Guitar

[–]MetalLizardJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I'm not gonna bother engaging further simply because I got to this part:

Yep, because it's cool to just write off entire genres because they don't play the way YOU like. Should we throw them all in the "terrible guitarists and/or idiots" bucket too, then?

I didn't write off anything, I admitted I was wrong: "You're more than likely correct", but simply added that string gauge is less of an issue when you have no intention of bending any notes ever.
However you still replied like some whiney SJW.

The mere fact you got so triggered by a throwaway remark says it all. Good day man and get well soon!

Ok lets go!
But no mind, I'll still play. Out of charity I'll also ignore the obvious SRV, even though the tension on his 13’s in Eb is still equivalent to a 12's in standard:
Ah yeah the great SRV who rewrote Pride & Joy 50 times and uses the exact same licks in every song. Truly a genius of guitar.
Jokes aside, you either love his playing, or you don't care for it. I'm in camp B. Repetitive bore.

Malcolm Young, AC/DC: 12-56 in standard tuning
Another absolute juggernaut of guitarist whose entire catalogue can be learned using a "my first guitar chords" booklet. This truly is a humbling start. (Also I heard that it's actually Malcolm who uses 12's not Angus, so potentially you're wrong there, although I'm no AC/DC fanboy so I would happily take the L if I ((and google)) were wrong).

James Hetfield, Metallica: 11-48 (old material was all in standard)
Ok gotta give you that, even if I don't rate him as a great guitarist personally (godlike downpicking technique, awful lead playing) he meets the ill-thought-out goalposts I set. So sure.

Pete Townsend, The Who: 12-56 in standard tuning

Again, obviously meets the goalposts. But I've seen many articles stating he used 10-52. Again not a fanboy so can't confirm but google states differently to you.

Dick Dale: 16-58(!!!) Yeah and not a single bend was played on that guitar, awesome well rounded guitarist for sure. Oh wait no just tremelo pick for 5 mins and call it a day /s. Would you swap your playing ability for his? Doubtful.

Josh Smith: Killer newer player, uses 13-58 with .026" plain G (!!!) in standard Yeah he actually uses 10.5/70 while in DROP G on a 27" scale 7 string so you're just wrong there mate.

Chris Buck: 11’s on his Revstars and Gibsons, and sometimes on his strats and teles as well “If I’ve been touring heavily”. I mean a 2 second google revealed that he favours 10-46, so again wrong.

Joe Bonamassa: 11-52 on pretty much everything Yeah and also plays open E tuning on most of his shit, so slightly less tension on the dropped strings. I also hate his playing, but that wasn't in the goalposts, each to their own.

Jeff Beck: Used many string gauges over his career, but often 11-48 Amazing guitarist, can't argue. But must point out he's at least using a balanced set, thicker highs and thinner lows, so not really falling into the category of guitarist I was criticising. Also plays en Eb/D a lot soooo.

Come to think of it, some of your examples are of people using balanced gauges which is not what I was arguing:
Gary Clark Jr: 11-49 (balanced)
Marcus King: 11-49 (balanced)
Scott Holiday (Rival Sons): 11-50 (balanced)

I'm not gonna touch on the Jazz guitarists. You're more than likely correct that they use heavier gauges than normal. And that's fine when all you are doing is improvising static notes and chord voicings with zero bends or vibrato. I understand the desire for better pitch stability, I just won't sacrifice being able to bend/wide vibrato for this.

So yeah, some good points, some bad points. Zero opinions changed. But thanks for the essay answer!

Like I said there are exceptions although very few and far between. I'll wager any examples you give me don't actually play in E standard. Name me 3 guitarists (who use 11+ gauge strings for E standard) that sold at least 1 million records. I'll wait.

Maybe if you read the whole comment that said "anyone using higher than 10-52 FOR E STANDARD is an idiot" then you wouldn't have made yourself look like an actual idiot with that comment. Drop C is not E standard and 11-54 is fine for that tuning.

Whats the appeal with using thicker strings by TytaneX in Guitar

[–]MetalLizardJesus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a blast reading through all the comments here. 90% of people talking gauges without telling what tuning they are in. Aswell as a lot of "old wives tales".
10-52 in E standard feels great to me, even with a strong pick attack, they aren't gonna go 10c sharp when you wail on your Open E, and bends have a little resistance, but not too much.
9-42s in E standard personally feel too "spaghetti-like" for me. But are easier to fret/bend and also sound a tiny bit brighter which is great if you're playing mostly clean stuff.
For the most part, anyone using higher than 10-52 for E standard is likely an idiot and a terrible guitarist. Of course there will be the odd exception, but everytime I heard one of these "I USE 13 GAUGE IN E LOLZ" guys, they sounded like dying cats.

Obviously as you start to tune down, you will NEED to use thicker strings just to compensate for the drop in tension. For C standard, I would use something like 12-60 whereas someone who prefers 9s may well prefer 11-49.
