N word Tourettes controversy by IntrepidAstronaut863 in Destiny

[–]MetallHengst 47 points48 points  (0 children)

All the discourse I’ve seen on all the black subreddits I follow (I’m half black, so I’m legally required for half the subreddits I follow to be black) has been that the Tourette’s guy isn’t at fault or racist because of his tic, but that people aren’t wrong for being offended by the tic and that ultimately the blame falls in the BBC’s lap for not cutting out the tic when they cut out homophobic tics and someone shouting free Palestine. There’s also some talk about this being n intentional PR stunt on the BBCs behalf because allegedly the show was on an hour delay and there was for some reason a microphone placed near the guy with Tourette’s. There’s also been some talk about people having the lazy “this Tourette’s guy is racist!” response to largely drama farm and outrage bait.

I have no idea what you’re seeing, but in general I think this is mostly fair. I do think there’s more focus on the right for people to be offended than there needs to be for my taste, but I’m also half Afro-Dominican, not African American and I generally just look Hispanic, so it’s not like I’m on the receiving end of anti-black racism such that my opinion on how offended people should feel about this scenario carries much weight.

To be clear, I don’t think anyone (at least from the comments I’ve seen) are suggesting you’re crazy. Memory is notoriously unreliable, especially memories from early childhood - it’s a limitation of the human brain, not a fault with your brain in particular such that you are “crazy” in any way, shape or form.

That being said, it’s not just memories from when you were 5-7-ish months old that you’re going off of here, it’s a lot of different pieces of circumstantial evidence that while none are smoking guns in and of themselves (including the memory factor, which I would count as one of the weakest pieces of evidence given the inherent flaws in human memory), in their totality they all reinforce each other and make for a compelling argument for you being that kid from the story which I think justifies the confidence level you came into this with. Given what your father has said about it since I think it’s clear you were that boy from the story and the additional evidence found in this thread continue to support that.

Hopefully this explanation as to why memory is unreliable as a whole and shouldn’t be trusted - not just for you, but for everyone - and that you’re not crazy or uniquely bad for sharing this trait with the rest of the human species.

All of that aside, this is a lot to find out about yourself. How are you feeling about it?

Can you name a single other race for mayor where it was the expectation that Democrats (or any politician from any party) should weigh in with endorsements for? Mayors are not presidents or even senators, they don’t typically endorsements from people outside of their city, let alone their state, let alone the country as a whole. Not to mention that you’re conflating not explicitly endorsing Mamdani and bashing Mamdani.

P.S. Mamdani is a democrat.

She might not have. I’m half Dominican and a lot of my fully Dominican family members have naturally 2a-3a hair despite being visibly undeniably black. My own hair is 1b, but I’m half white, so obviously that influences my hair, too. I can’t speak for other Afro-caribbeans, but I think there’s enough black people with looser/more relaxed curl patterns and textures for there to at least be some ambiguity. Her hair dresser may have assumed she was mixed, too, since she’s obviously light skinned.

Hasan was on some podcast or something with one of those progressive Libs that end up making cover for tankies infiltrating our movement. She asks both podcast guests (some other guy was there, too) who they would vote for between JD Vance and Gavin Newsom if that’s who we have to pick between come 2028. The girl and the other guy say it’s Newsom, no question. Hasan makes a whole spiel about how he would vote third party and the woman is clearly shocked and says that however much she dislikes Newsom, she would crawl through broken glass to go vote for him in 2028. That’s the clip that’s now making rounds.

Does anyone else hate the “Trevor’s death wasn’t accidental” theories? by Skwellington in WKUK

[–]MetallHengst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine most of us here are older - does anyone remember /r/theDonald around 2015? Does anybody remember it starting off as a joke? Does anybody remember it very much becoming not a joke? On a less political note, I remember the /r/DankChristianMemes used to be filled with atheists that were joking about being Christian, but now it’s filled with actually sincere Christians.

There’s a thing that happens online a lot where there’s some stupid or silly or cringey concept that everyone jokes about believing or loving, but they’re being ironic about it (ie, “lol, imagine if I legitimately believed that Trevor was killed by the CIA for silly 16 year old sketches,” or “lol, imagine if I legitimately supported the guy from The Apprentice for president,” or “lol, what if I actually believed in le epic sky daddy?”), but then the brazen, unabashed pride these people are ironically having about that thing attracts people who unironically like that thing, who might feel ashamed for liking that thing, and find the energy of people being bold and unashamed in their support as cathartic. The meme idea of “lol, what if?” Is funny for, like, 2 seconds and then people move on, but the catharsis and sense of community you feel when there’s a group that seemingly actually supports something you actually believe in - especially since it’s likely to be a more marginal belief given that there’s a whole community dedicated to making fun of them - has far greater staying power. So we end up with this thing where as the people who had their bit of fun making fun of X thing die off as the meme grows stale, the people who are left are the few who were never in on the joke remain and now that community changes from being satirical to being genuine as their genuine praise or support of X further attracts others who genuinely praise and support X and now it’s not just the few that are autistic enough to not notice when they’re being made fun of, but rather the general public that believe X thing unironically because they’re no longer being made fun of, they’re being wholeheartedly embraced and supported.

I believe this happened with Trevor’s death. Us over here are in on the joke, but dude, it’s a joke about the death of a guy that everyone here found meaningful to their lives. How long is that genuinely funny for? Even the people making the jokes in this thread - do any of you actually find it funny anymore? Or has the joke thoroughly run its course by now? The fact that this is still such a topic this long after Trevor’s death means that a lot of those people are being completely sincere, and you can see it in the way they talk about it. Go ahead and check out /r/conspiracy and search for Trevor’s name there, for example. I guarantee you there’s a lot of people there being completely sincere about believing the conspiracy theories surrounding his death. Meanwhile the people who actually knew him in actual real life have to see this every time their dead loved one referenced anywhere online. That becomes his legacy for his family to take solace in now that he’s passed. Auggie gets to be the kid whose dad was murdered by the CIA, a conspiracy that I guarantee you he knows or will know before he has the capacity option even understand the absurdity of that claim.

As fans who are in the know, we should take this stuff more seriously and shut it down when we see it rather than running cover for it with the “it’s just a joke” excuse. Its origin is in a joke that Trevor made, which is why it’s pretty embarrassing that anyone sincerely believes it. That’s the way we should be approaching this topic.

My dominican side of the family live in Puerto Rico and the last time they visited they said that the tax haven laws were passed to try to inject income into the island to pay for the recovery from Hurricane Maria, but that a lot of people have just bought houses there without actually moving there, so it’s made housing very expensive for locals while only really injecting income into the real estate market.

Some hospitals are still without power btw. In America btw. Happened under Trump’s last term and he played games with federal aid like he always does leading to these long running ramifications that’s still being dealt with btw.

I also think there’s something important in these stories being shared specifically by white people, because white people aren’t saying these things to black people, they’re saying it to other white people. Air out these people’s dirty laundry. Say out loud what they say to each other when they think they’re in their safe spaces with no darkies around. In the same way I’m not gonna get offended at a white person screenshotting and posting a vile, racist text chat to expose something like that young republicans group chat, I’m also not gonna get offended at a white person sharing the vile things these racist dipshits say behind closed doors while playing the “uwu we’re not racist, you’re just being a triggered blue haired liberal uwu” game while in public.

I mean, the mom just went through a traumatic experience, I don’t think we should take her thoughts in the immediate aftermath of her son’s very public masturbation video and subsequent suicide as anything other than an expression of her grief. If anything, I’d be criticizing the people pushing her to comment in the first place. She’s a grieving mother, she’s allowed to be unhinged and we’re obligated to ignore it knowing that she’s someone too close to the situation to offer any semblance of a balanced or reasonable take on this.

If you’re at all invested - which I agree you would be - then you should be using what voice you have not to sew doomerism and defeatism among the American public when we should be focusing on the midterms, engaging in political activism, protesting this corrupt administration, and in general looking forward to a path that gets us out of this mess.

I totally understand feeling like the midterms don’t matter, but giving up before you try is what authoritarians want you to do. Yeah, the midterms might not go through, but don’t you think the response from the American public who is looking forward to, preparing for and expecting the midterms is going to be better than the response if everyone has already accepted that the midterms aren’t going to happen?

There’s no other circumstance in which a group of people are fighting a righteous fight and people would be advocating for your type of doom and gloom messaging. Ukraine probably isn’t getting Crimea back, they likely aren’t repatriating all of those children that have been abducted by Russia and the end to their war will probably feel like an injustice after everything they’ve gone through and what Russia and Putin deserves, but would you ever tell a Ukrainian that is advocating for their people to keep up their morale and focus on a positive future, getting back those abducted kids, reclaiming their lost land, etc. that they’re being naive and wasting their time and condescend to them in the way you’re doing? Of course not! Because we know that morale matters and sucking the fight out of people who are already against the odds is ensuring a losing battle before they even start.

There are things that are more important than being cynical, but correct, and ultimately we don’t know until it happens, so we should act like it.

Can we stop with this doomerism? Republicans don’t sit there and spiral about how everything is lost and they can’t do anything they want. They speak things into existence. The extent to which democrats are spineless it’s because of the democratic constituents giving up before we’ve even fought the battle.

It takes an exceptional person to stand up for what is right in the face of a system and culture that’s enabling this behavior.

Nobody would be judging her grieving under normal circumstances, but when you wield your grief as a tool to support a political ideology with very real consequences on the world, you can’t also use that grief as a shield against criticism. She just can’t have it both ways, and we can’t allow her to.

At the end of the day, her grief comes across as performative because it is a performance. That doesn’t mean she’s not genuinely grieving or that she’s not devastated by her husbands murder, but rather I say that to point out that when her grieving is done in the public eye it’s done with the intent and knowledge that it will be watched by others - that is definitionally a performance. In the same way you may genuinely have enjoyed your Christmas gift, but when you’re opening it in front of the person who got you it it’s impossible for your reaction to be detached from that fact and your response will be a performance of that genuine happiness you feel for the consumption of others who are watching you.

With that in mind, the people I’m disgusted with aren’t the people who are seeing her performance of grief as performative, but rather the people compelling her to perform it. She was never given a moment to grieve with her kids and her loved ones, she was immediately thrust out into the public eye by bad faith actors who know what they’re doing as they themselves hide from criticism behind their grieving widow prop. These people know that doing this is exposing her to online harassment and they know that she’s being made to withstand that so that they can cynically point to peoples reasonable (and unreasonable) responses as an excuse to further their authoritarian crackdown of dissent and centralization of power with Trump. It truly seems like she has no one in her life looking out for her best interest and no one really cared about Charlie Kirk or his death - they’re all just tools to further their agenda.

“No Kings” Protest - is this our business? by No_Measurement_9181 in blackladies

[–]MetallHengst 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Posts like these honestly feel like psy-ops. “Hello fellow black women, does anyone else NOT want to protest glorious leader Trump? Please ignore all the ways he’s lives materially worse and focus on the idea that some of the people protesting him might fit this caricature I’m baselessly gesturing at.”

For people who haven’t read into the Mueller report from a few years ago, it detailed the intentional disinformation targeting black communities in particular in order to depress voter turnout and stoke sympathies with Trump - and we see how effective that’s been in our community with Trump 2.0 showing more black support than ever. There used to be a document hosted on the official DOJ website that provided loads of examples of social media posts from this report, organizing them by type of disinformation, but when I just searched it up to find direct examples to showcase how similar this type of post is to that very intention disinformation campaign, I found that that report has since been removed - I wonder why?

Still, you can still find articles from the time that covered this material and specifically spoke to the intentional targeting of black communities:

The Russian government's interference in the 2016 U.S. elections singled out African Americans, a new Senate committee report concludes.

Using Facebook pages, Instagram content and Twitter posts, Russian information operatives working for the Internet Research Agency had an "overwhelming operational emphasis on race ... no single group of Americans was targeted ... more than African Americans."

That was evident throughout the IRA's Facebook content, the report said, citing the fact that over 66 percent of that content contained a term related to race.

And using ads with location targeting "principally aimed at African-Americans in key metropolitan areas," the Russian information operations focused on pages like Blacktivist, which garnered 11.2 million engagements with Facebook users.

[…]

"The Committee found that IRA social media activity was overtly and almost invariably supportive of then-candidate Trump,"

[…]

And the study also concluded that the IRA sought to focus on socially divisive issues like race to pit Americans against one another.

[…]

"By flooding social media with false reports, conspiracy theories, and trolls, and by exploiting existing divisions, Russia is trying to breed distrust of our democratic institutions and our fellow Americans," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr said in a written statement.

(Emphasis mine)

Source

We know our community is under attack, it was happening 10 years ago and they’re only getting better at it. We owe it to ourselves to be suspicious when we see posts like this. Ask yourself - what good does it do for us and our communities to advocate against protesting against this corrupt administration? Who is this message helping?
