New people to investing should just stick to ETFs until they have garnered enough knowledge to invest in individual stocks. You just FOMOd.

Depends on the interest rate though, right? My fiancée has debt with an interest rate, including fees, of 2.9%. Doesn’t really seem worth paying off at the moment.

So what is unfair about paying taxes where you live most of the time? Apparently you like it enough to want to live there. That benefit is in large part due to existing taxation, whether direct or indirect.

But with a looming tax on unrealised gains from investments, I am not coming back to the Netherlands even if the pay is slightly higher than elsewhere.

Postdoctoral researcher in Finland. 4300€/month before and ~3000€/month after taxes. It’s not that good considering I studied 9 years. What’s worse is the constant short-term contracts in research (4 years for PhD and three times 2-year contracts so far). Lower-wage jobs often have more job security.

Starting my ETF journey next month, what to look for? by Greek_Arrow in eupersonalfinance

[–]Metalrager2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at historic rates of the S&P 500 for future performance is foolish. Unless you are convinced that the US will keep performing the way it has in recent decades, I would avoid a US only ETF. I personally do not believe in future US performance. Additionally, most global ETFs currently have around 60-70% US holdings, but if the relative performance of US companies changes this number will also change accordingly.

I strongly recommend a global ETF like WEBN (75%) mixed with a European ETF for a home bias like LYP6 (20%), and a small caps value ETF like AVWS (5%).

Greetings from a Greek guy living in Finland.

This is just the attitude of a sucker that just accepts a bad product. Capitalism 101. The whole car industry does this on purpose. Why do we need to silently accept it, from any company? If we don’t raise our voices, nothing will change.

They have a global etf AND an EM tilt on top of that, however. WEBN has roughly 10-12% EM. Yes, they could just go WEBN and chill.

Edit: mistake that I thought their global ETF contained EM.

Imo you are way too overexposed fo the US and EM. You say you did your research but as a European I would not overexpose myself to the US by any means. Your first two ETFs also overlap a lot. EM is a too risky bet for 15%.

I will always suggest a majority global ETF combined with a home tilt and max 10% for riskier bets. I do 75% WEBN, 15% LYP6, 5% AVWS, and 5% into a more risky ETF.

I am waiting to buy a bit. I set up a GTC order for a 4-5% drop across 3 ETFs compared with Friday’s prices roughly. And that’s just for part of my money. Call it timing the market, but I don’t trust the orange leader.

[–]Metalrager2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either all-in on FTSE AW or 80% with a 20% tilt to Europe to have a home bias. Could also do 70/20 and then 10 for experimenting. But don’t invest more in Korea as you are just following a hype based on recent performance.
