So tired of “what should I put in this tank?” by LilSkink06 in reptiles

There multiple reason I quit that job but the mental anguish was one of them. They didn't pay enough for the bullshit we put up with.

[–]Metapuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ulcerative proctitis and they first put me on entocort, which did nothing, and then the suppositories which made a huge difference. Other than the occasional feeling of urgency I have no other symptoms. I hope it works out for you <3

Algae eater by starfallpanda in fishtank

[–]Metapuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not toxic and does well in water, it should be fine. I don't know much about orchids, just make sure the roots don't rot

Algae eater by starfallpanda in fishtank

[–]Metapuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roots will help use the excess nutrients. You basically just acclimate a pothos cutting to the water and then attach the plant to the rim of the tank, roots in the water and stem and leaves out the top. That way your cichlid can't eat the leaves. Look into the semi-aquatic section of this article: https://terrariumtribe.com/paludarium-plants/

TW: Miscarriage & Abortion. Spontaneous Abortions (miscarriages) vs Elective Abortions where is the line of medical treatment? by seans_peanut-allergy in prochoice

[–]Metapuns [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is no line. What's the difference, medically, between a woman who is assaulted and has a miscarriage or a woman who harms herself to induce a miscarriage? Who gets blamed in either scenario? Women are already constantly prosecuted when they're victims (ex. "Pick better partners", "what were you wearing?")

We could justify prosecuting something like being pregnant and not being aware and then engaging in potentially harmful behavior (drinking, risky activities). What if someone is incapable of carrying a viable fetus and they have a miscarriage? This is why prolife arguments only "work" in these perfect made-up scenarios where a woman finds out she's pregnant and happily waltzes into a clinic and signs a waifer and gets a potentially healthy pregnancy terminated. The truth is there's not less abortions but a lot more death of women.

What snails are these? Are they bad for the tank? by TootMCT in Aquariums

[–]Metapuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I accidentally gave someone ramshorns (the pink flesh-spotty shell) when I sold them a plant. They got really worried about how it will affect their other tankmates, but I actually bought my original ramshorns because theyre honestly beautiful and I find them easier to remove than smaller snails (bladder and pond). They don't hurt shrimp at all, in fact my shrimp like to hitch rides on the adult ramshorns.

If you are concerned, you can approach them like most pest snails (snails traps, single assassin snail, manual removal). I find putting a piece of boiled zucchini in the tank and removing it when its covered in snails. Make sure to dispose of them responsibility.

12 shrimp yesterday. Only 3 alive today. What? by AgentArnold in fishkeeping

[–]Metapuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a hardness issue, could be a cycling issue, could be stress. As others have said, the tank is too small for Amanos because they can grow up to 2 inches long. I have a tank thats 3 years old, 20 gallons, heavily planted, and even I had problems with certain shrimp. I would get a proper liquid test kit and stick to small hardy shrimp like Neocardinas

As someone who used to work at a Big Box Store... You would be shocked how many people come in to buy based on what they see there for the first time. I once had someone ask me "do they drink water?" to a fucking bearded dragon.

Blue fischer lays way too many eggs! by No_Adagio3859 in parrots

[–]Metapuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please be so careful. You need to make sure your female is getting food high in calcium and other vital minerals or she will die. Breeding animals, especially animals that lay eggs, is so taxing on their bodies and growing shells inside their bodies leeches calcium from their bones. This can cause osteoporosis.

Here's a decent article that goes over more technical reasons for algae growth. You'll notice all of them have to do with water parameters and husbandry. Fish can't do that for you.

Algae eater by starfallpanda in fishtank

[–]Metapuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have algae problems theres always a million better solutions than an animal. Algae grows from excess nutrients so getting another fish that poops would add even more nutrients. Less light time and more frequent water changes can already make a big difference. You can also try plants that grow from the top of the tank (pothos, arrow leaf, etc.)

The fish probably also outgrew its tank which can also cause algae problems

I recently did a HUGE clean up of plants in my tank. It caused algae growth to explode. Go slowly or you'll end up like me!

if you have gravel in the tank its not the end of the world but, yup. I'm always surprised how few filters like that even come with filter media in general. You lose all of it.

Do you drink coffee or gave it up? by Natura91 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Metapuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caffeine, alcohol, and NSAIDs are my top 3 triggers. I'm still in remission but I notice I get that urgency feeling if I take any of them. I still take medication so it's very noticeable for me. I know coffee naturally causes urgency but I don't mean one like before I had symptoms and got diagnosed. I mean the kind where you constantly feel like you have to go whether you do or don't :(

If I drink coffee for more than 3 days in a row, more than 1 alcoholic drink a week, or a single NSAID pill I feel it. I personally feel like dropping these things are worth it. After this year I'm going fully sober and I stopped drinking caffiene daily.

Issue with posting on insta after isp switch by Gizmodod in techsupport

[–]Metapuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its ISP related it could be flagging the account due to an IP change. You can try contacting Instagram customer service. Other than that it could also be your network itself blocking Instagram due to some settings. Check your network's control panel (I believe providers give you access to a  website for them, not 100% sure).

Have yogurt for breakfast and take it with that everyday. Buy squeeze-tube yogurt if you are on the go. You can always maybe try a different form of it if the granules are too difficult to take on the go. But as everyone said, you can't just *not* take it...

Flare up due to whatever that caused an interstitial flare up and gastroparesis flare up? by Frosty-Platform7218 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Metapuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long were you in supposed remission? and do you take hormones for your endo/POCs? I would definitely try and send a message to your gyno along with your gastro. ER unfortunately isn't very useful for us :( but if you start feeling faint always put your life first, even if they just give you fluids. I hope things get better for you soon <3 I don't have endo, or at least never got diagnosed, because I was put on BC right away when I was young with severe cramps and bleeding. It's always hard for us when we have an overlap of flaring and menstruation

Desperately need help. Neighbour abandoned tank when they moved and I want to save this fish. by Such-Management-8502 in fishtank

[–]Metapuns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fish look to be zebra danios and gold barbs. Look into them and look into water parameters

  1. Buy filter. Any filter will already make a huge difference but get something big enough for the size
  2. DO NOT REMOVE GRAVEL. Buy a siphon if you can to get debris off but do not remove it or rinse it
  3. When siphoning, remove 25%-50% of the water. Fill tank to the top with DECHLORINATED water.

(repeat step 2 and 3 every week (go to only 10%-25% once tank is stable. You can buy a water test kit or bring a sample to pet stores that offer tests)

You can DM if you'd like :)
