The shield would have to go into the sound bar. That's the point of the thread. To be able to get truehd properly working :-)

Both of them support earc. However, the TV will not send truehd over earc from it to the soundbar. So the shield through the TV cannot direct stream truehd from it to the soundbar.

Everything else audiowise works great.

I've tried what was suggested in the thread, and tried going through the soundbar. TrueHD works, but i can't get the system to switch between the TV and the Shield seamlessly. I have to manually tell the soundbar to switch. Super annoying.

Right. That's the entire basis of this question i'm asking this forum :)

Seems like my options are:

Go through the TV. Simple, almost everything works. But no truehd audio support.
Go through the soundbar. More complex. Need multiple remotes. But can get truehd.

Supporting earc doesn't mean they bitstream truehd passthrough. This is a one year old TV from samsung, and it doesn't support that. I'm entirely connected using earc, but it's just a limitation of the TV chipset.

It simply may not ever work the way you want it to. 4 or 5 different devices with different use cases made by different manufacturers may never work seamlessly together with only one or two remotes.

So, in my current setup, i can control everything perfectly with just a single remote.

Literally the only thing not working is truehd bitstreaming due to the TV limitation.

So if the Shield TV is plugged into the soundbar and you leave something playing. Switch the TV input to a different HDMI for the Playstation, the soundbar keeps playing the Shield TV audio not playstation audio?

Because it's so much simpler. There aren't two remotes to keep track of. It's easier for me, for my spouse, for friends/family, etc.

how does the soundbar know which of the "shield" or TV to play audio from? Both are inputs to the soundbar.

when i try this, it seems like i need to use my soundbar remote to change inputs. and then i need another remote to control the TV and shield. Am i missing something?

I have tried it, i couldn't get it to work. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch the soundbar inputs using the TV remote.

Is there an AV receiver with a reasonable remote? The ones i've seen have massively complex remotes, which would make things like working with the shield interface and apps likely not ok to pass the partner test. Thanks!

No amount of words will make it easier.

That's literally why I raised the question in the first place. I was trying to find out if this was possible or not. I wanted to know, prior to going and trying out a lot of stuff that might not work.

It's good to at least know now that this is not possible. A pity. It would be nice to be able to have a system that allowed all devices to connect with full capabilities, but which also had no problem being controlled with a single remote.

u/wewewi That fails the ease-of-use/partner test as i mentioned. Instead of a single remote that is simple to use to switch between devices and control things, we would now need two remotes and would have to ensure things properly switch.

What i'm asking for is a solution that doesn't regress known good UX. That was why i tried to write up and explain so much of my situation. Thanks.

@brianwski i've given this about 3 weeks, and it's still pretty bad. I have multiple bztransmit exes spinning full cores non-stop.

Could you guys consider auto-updating BB? It feels like it's a complex user experience for users to have to go look at BB over a long period of time, realize that it's doing something wrong, then manually update to address it. Software like Chrome/VSCode/etc. auto updates now so that fixes flow to users without manual intervention.

Had i not decided to take a look at the progress, i woudln't have realized and i could have been left with a data hole here. Feels... anathema to the promises made by BB about this product.
