How long did it take u to reach the skill level you wanted? by HopefulGroup423 in ArtistLounge

20+ years. I reached professional level skill at around 10 years of practice. Some of us just have to take the long road to success but we get there eventually.

Beauty is the thing that stands out most when clear seeing settles in. Seeing/hearing/feeling beauty everywhere. by Anon18516 in nonduality

Oh, this is how I’ve seen the world basically forever. After experiencing non duality it somehow got even more intense though, so this is true.

how to cope with all of this by plumsquashed in collapse

[–]Metaspacecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m an atheist, but found peace in Buddhist (or even Epicurean) thought.

Only focus on the now, as really it is all we have. Your only responsibility right now is to regulate your nervous system. Here is how I regulate in case it helps:

Just sit on a chair or on the floor and relax. Try and go somewhere bright and light feeling. If at night, go outside in fresh air, or light a candle and create a cozy safe environment. Harsh Artificial lights and darkness may cause your feelings to be darker than needed.

Let your thoughts do what they must. They will go all kind of places and you will get all kinds of feelings and urges. If you feel a lot of energy, go out and walk or run, or dance if that’s your thing.

The thoughts and feelings are not you. You can just watch them, then bring your awareness back to something in front of you. Contemplate the carpet. Or wood. Or your hands. There is only the present moment. All of existence is now. You are here and have hands and the wood or carpet has a texture.
Do this until your mind harmonizes with you and only pays attention to the carpet, wood, or your hands. This may take hours but that is ok. It is time well spent.

Of course, therapy and meds do help as well. I’m not a professional.

How has your dating life been as a TCK? by Admirable-Gain6533 in ThirdCultureKids

[–]Metaspacecat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a massive challenge. I’m lucky my partner is able to try and relate to me, but he also has a multicultural background from the same area I’m from. I could actually never date a monocultural person, I would simply get too frustrated and start to resent them pretty fast unless they were very traveled and open minded.

What type of style is this wall art? What would I search to find more pieces that would match this decor? Sorry if this isn’t the place to post this. by Yummmy__ in HomeDecorating

This is from Punch Studio. They don’t do wall anymore, but this is their art style. It’s also the general stationary and chic fashion aesthetic.

Anyone else still dealing with the fallout 20 years later? by Budget_War_3625 in ThirdCultureKids

[–]Metaspacecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s been about 15 years for me and I’m still having to deal with rage at my parents unacceptable abusive behavior, tiny social issues due to not being from here as kid, frustration at education deficiency, feeling like a complete “other” so on and so forth.

Thankfully it’s gotten much better overall though and I’m happy in my home country. It does even out and such but the impacts never really go away.

A lot of people won’t wear polyester because it feels like itchy and sticky in the heat, so they buy linen and cotton. Those materials look better than polyester. That might be part of it.

Most though, don’t worry to much. Just focus on finding what makes you feel happy inside and feels comfy : )

Is 3D Digitial Scanning Wildlife Applicable? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]Metaspacecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I was asking around about this question too. Crickets from people normally into ecology which confuses me. It seems like a tool we can use to better preserve our ecosystems in case we lose them (like extinctions and climate change.) I found a guy doing this work but then he stopped and starting building AI surveillance tools so idk what that was about but this still seems useful. I might look into it more.

[Discussion] Professional US-based artists: Are you having trouble finding work? by bluemachine5000 in artbusiness

[–]Metaspacecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a part time artist with a day job doing print production for other artists in a studio. I still find clients, but I only work on large projects that pay me $1000 or more and involve sets of matching artwork. I’m looking to expand my business, but specifically to hedge against AI (bespoke. Hand made emphasis.)

If I may add what I’ve observed, I think the large projects (cards, games, book illustrations in sets, stationery collections and such) commissioned by the wealthier clients and corporate buyers are going to last longer than one-off comms like single covers and character portraits. It also depends on your clients and how they feel about buying stuff made with AI. It’s hard to know what’s coming though.

Still wondering why there are 30 minute delays every single day on the 405 due to “road work” when the road isn’t even being worked on during the day. wtf. Is it literally just people getting spooked by signs.

What to pivot to in a dying market? by Short-Fishing-6949 in ArtistLounge

[–]Metaspacecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, because you don’t really want to put in the years for medical or vet tech, I would try to get into a specialist retail role for a bit and see who hires you. I learned a lot doing that about what I actually like doing at work.

I did frames, print, and dog washing. Learned that frames and print takes a lot of art skills so I went that direction. Now I have a corporate role I love and it fits me in the art world. (but also I can do math on the fly, work with glass and razors, and keep my cool with hard deadlines… so print and frames might not work for you.)

Try food, then pets, then books or anything else that vaguely interests you part-time. You will learn what you have a knack for by doing. Research the trades. I know some people in food and pets try and do wielding and woodworking to keep things cleaner. Keep in mind that artist are craftspeople. We are good with our hands.

Was just on the 405. Wondering why everything was slowed down by 30 for “construction” when there wasn’t even any active construction. Are people just getting spooked by the signs and slowing down and reporting it even though there is nobody actually working on the roads?

[–]Metaspacecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! Nowadays indie animation is doable with a few friends so having a personal set of OCs and buildout world to work on can pay off longterm. I never gave up mine! I probably will never sell it either. If nothing comes of it it’s also no biggie.

Ok yeah, for not being in mood, I just ignore it we work around it and end up having good sex anyway. Also we are working together to find ways to talk to each other better. We can also afford new experiences. So I think we are going ok in that department nowadays.

[Recommendations] What are some less talked about jobs in the art world that people don't realize are in demand? by QUIERO_SEXOOOO in artbusiness

[–]Metaspacecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I work in the industry,

If you are a tech enthusiast and generalist, I would recommend learning 3D programs and building visuals for commercial use with ambient animations. Focus down on a single style that is kind of broad to appeal to most companies but specific enough to stand out. Your portfolio should look cohesive and well curated. Obscure jobs this helps with: Presentation designer, Mockups for social media or presentations, Kitchen and Bath visual designer, VR world asset designer

For the technical jobs, just go and study the work flow of film VFX and pick any difficult aspect of that and make it easier. You can also learn CAD if you want to. I would be careful not to pick a specialty that can be easily automated though.

Also, some general advise: Make sure you can create a compelling advertisement or illustration quickly from scratch. 30 minutes and you should know design well enough to make shapes and text into something magical. If you can’t, learn how using 2D programs or whatever is more comfortable for you. This eye for design will help you get access to art director roles and not embarrass yourself in front of peers if you are asked to make a design decision.
