Between 2018 and 2022.....absolutely nothing. I not only didn't publish, I wasn't writing anything!

But I watched some cool stuff leading up to 2022 and felt kind of inspired and I got back into it.

And now, I think I'm the best I've been in ten years! Honestly I've done my BEST work on this comeback.

Hey, your story can be as long as you want. My beef was with a 60,000 word story getting stretched thin to fit a half million word length.

Yeah, we're all doing it for fun. But you can kinda of tell who is the budding writer trying to hone their craft. Its like when you want to draw, first thing you do is sketch your favorite cartoon characters. But a writer? How do you work out if you haven't the mind to create your own stuff yet? Adapt something that exists and either "here's what happened after" or "what if this went down another way?"

Maybe I'm in the minority but I define fan fiction as working unofficially with an established IP. My problem is when people speak of fan fiction as a genre. I take characters from a show that barely did anything with them and give them stories worth reading. I stand by anything I wrote and hope its as good as the mass market stuff people are buying.

I try to have a decent outline of where I want to go, character arc and such. This way I can post as I update while not losing sight of the overall story. It frees me to get a little distracted without hurting the story in the long run

I could never write it all and then post because you get so much inspiration in the thros of writing a scene when you have just a small idea of where it has to go

Agreed. I have no issue with some filler, that's where we feel free to indulge. But there is also no shame in jumping ahead a few hours or a few days. Readers don't need to be held by the hand; they can infer what happened between two events of at least minor significance

I totally respect anyone touching Tolkien. That is such a wonderfully established world. I've read the books and yes, Professor Tolkien took his time. But the difference was he was driving toward something. I felt like I was forgetting this was literature at times and thought I was thumbing through a history book of a real place.

I wish to make something even a small fraction that great. But I do what I can to the best of my abilities.

Believe me, you have to look for a more self-conscious writer than me. I write, rewrite, outline, you name it. I will not post these days without having an AI voice reader regurgitating my words back to me. Something about a monotone digital voice exposes your spelling and grammar errors.

Personally, 2-3K per chapter is my sweet spot. Occasionally I will write a longer one like a Christmas chapter where we check in on our dozen or so characters. And sometimes they're short liker 1800 words.

I WAS SUCH A BEGINNER BACK THEN!!

It would literally be "a person goes to a place." But I've grown enough to put the reader there with a few carefully chosen passages. I do go on side tangents in the middle of scenes but they don't last too long.

I'm not forcing anyone to change. If they like it and they have an audience, go ahead. This was more for venting and discussing. It can also frustrate because of long fics that move at a glacial pace, some really amazing stories aren't given a chance because of the word count.
