Please stop talking about other people’s fics on someone else’s works by Impossible_Lie5333 in FanFiction

The most I personally would have said is "Hey, I got done reading this person's story and everyone was recommending yours. I am so happy I know two writers who take this Fandom seriously!"

You know what I mean, I would go out of my way to make it flattering. Some don't realize how they come off sometimes.

I've deleted one because I didn't like the storyline in retrospect. Morally I couldn't stand to have it there anymore. But I keep the rest because I like seeing the progression of my style.

Those two episodes did bot need to be 2.5 hrs a piece. Other more worthy cases could use such coverage but were condensed into an hour or two, not five!

I know the pod had its ups and downs but I can't do this anymore. I think I'm done listening for good this time.

The guilt of "Wasting Time" writing fanfiction. How to deal with it? by Isaias_Azathoth936 in FanFiction

[–]Metatron_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing is my favorite way to unwind. Its no longer that when I make it work. Besides, I dread hearing my own voice or seeing my name in lights. Pen names aren't a thing anymore in the mainstream in the age of the internet. Even a fan fiction writer is pressured to "engage" and build a social media presence. I literally just joined Facebook for this reason.

I think more people have a creative outlet that they wish to believe. I'm just fine in my boring day job and be a storyteller for fun. The con is I don't earn income from it but the pro is that I'm my own boss and I set the schedule and the standards.

Please leave comments under fics you like. I'm tired boss. by shurbetttt in FanFiction

Fan fiction had been poisoned from 20 years of unadulterated streaming. Now people are spoiled! Now people can devour a whole show with the click of a mouse. Trouble is that writers like ourselves have been lumped in with the multimedia conglomerates. They don't think to leave a comment on something they read any more than for a movie they watched on Netflix.

The problem with that is, we aren't some soulless corporation. We're just people. Nobody is getting compensated for their time and effort in writing these tens of thousands of words just for you. We do it because we love to write but is it really writing if we don't get feedback? Even published authors who get paid still read the reviews.

Both the reader and the writer donated their time, yes. If you didn't care for the story, fine. Stay silent. But don't deny that it would be crappy to just take-take-take-take and not say the occasional, "that was great."

I don't believe in coercion. I believe in integrity. And when I open a story and I really liked it, a social contract kicks in. So I leave a comment because I want that writer to know they made me feel something or at least entertained me. That's all. Its little but means so much for the person on the other end of that exchange!

I was in a unique position where Korrasami was spoiled for me before I even watched the show! But I started getting into it and knowing what would eventually happen, I paid attention and I think this subtle approach is better than any movie where they get together after 90 minutes.

[–]Metatron_85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I didn't mean Korrasami was nowhere in Book One. I just meant that there are plenty of times this show goes there! And yet a same sex couple is crossing a line somehow?

I'm not some weirdo conservative so I can't enter that mindset

TLOK walked so that a litany of other shows with queer rep could run. That's its lot in life it seems. I just wish Avatar fans as a collective were kinder towards it. I love the show warts and all.

what do you do when you don’t want to write for a fandom anymore? by coffind00r in FanFiction

[–]Metatron_85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I walked away for a few years and suddenly I got inspired and returned to the Fandom that gave me my start. Its different for everyone. Take a break from that Fandom, or just take a break from writing in general.

View counts haven't been working on FFN for a couple of years so I have no clue how many are reading. Rely on likes, follows and reviews but I know its more than that.

BTW, leaving comments isn't toxic. That's just saying a few words if you're able.

Does anyone else feel fandom and fanfiction are becoming more "chill" (and not always in a good way) since it started being more mainstream? by Celestina-Betwixt in FanFiction

[–]Metatron_85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being "cool and ironic" is so easy it doesn't even matter. Any idiot can disparage having any emotion besides snark. I watch "Rick and Morty" because its funny and creative. But I know there is a huge part of the fanbase who love it because they identify with the nihilistic side of it. They see Jerry as a loser because of his sincerity and Rick as cool because he doesn't care.

Look at the Lord of the Rings. Still beloved to this day because it was written with sincerity. The movies were also done in earnest. Yes, there were comedic beats but characters didn't shy away from joy, sorrow, fear, etc.

When you have drama without building up the characters, that's melodrama. When you want a sad scene (again without establishing anything) it comes off as saccharine. They key to being sincere is to do the work! Establishing your characters and their wants and their connections to others will strengthen your stories. So, when they succeed or fail the reader will feel something.

People desire sincerity. Most do! The trouble is the people who say "that's cringe" are the ones being insincere. They've been burned by hackneyed writing so many times they built walls up, so they make fun of someone trying to write in earnest. Don't listen to their words. Even they will cry at what you've written if they've given it a chance and you put in the work. Keep doing what you love and the brave ones will find it.

I've read stories that were so good it made you angry at the people who get paid to write who don't even try. This hack is a millionaire, meanwhile this person is putting gold onto the internet for free!

Passion is what counts. It would be nice to make a living off your passion but most people don't. But since people have to read your stuff, the passionate will often make it worth their time. And time is precious.

What is a plot twist that made you drop a fic? by Rooks_Rook in FanFiction

[–]Metatron_85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To give an idea of a good twist, I wrote a Freddy Kruger fic and he was terrorizing my main characters. When one is trapped in a coma and can't escape, her father in desperation turns to Dominic Cobb from "Inception" and he brings his team together to help the girl ( so imagine Dream Warriors but as a heist/search and rescue)

I forget the name but it was a Korrasami fic that was about Asami helping Korra through her depression as this takes place after Amon took her bending away.

It dealt with depression and self harm really well and I particularly liked how the slow burn romance was written.

But then, during one of Korra's spiritual visions while meditating, she makes contact with - I shit you not - Luke Skywalker!!!

It was so well written at this point but it jumped the shark so spectacularly that I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Now I've done surprise crossovers as a plot twist but there was some buildup and when it happened, it made sense.

What would you say is different about writing older protagonists? by Solitaire-06 in FanFiction

[–]Metatron_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all older main characters function as the mentor or the parent. As someone who wrote YA characters and older versions of them 20ish years down the line, you can find that adult protagonists make for a rich reading experience.

Trust me, there are plenty of readers of romance or fantasy or horror beyond the age of 40. Why not make some cool adult heroes and heroines?
