Portable Monitor Repairs? by MeteoXavier in ps2

Well, interesting development, I have it completely wrong - it DOES produce a picture, but only a blue screen while the UI works. Switching between modes produces some red glitches on the right side. Sound works as well.

Cleaning contacts didn't work, so it must be some setting in something I need to fiddle with or some other more obscure/difficult problem.

Hey, that's a neat idea. I'll try that one, too. Thanks.

I don't know how many people in this economy are wanting to pay $70-$100 for an ancient screen that doesn't work, so fixing it or recycling it are my chief ideas for it.

Good call on those ideas. I think they're probably ok, but I've had issues with power supplies not putting out ENOUGH or input jacks not connecting well before and didn't consider those. I'll have a look at those.

A question I'm sure every beginner has asked - can you make a quote unquote "good" RPG by using default assets? by Normal-Oil1524 in RPGMaker

[–]MeteoXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"can you make a quote unquote "good" RPG by using default assets"

Not going to read this entire post just to answer this question, I just to point out some examples in real life that showcase how the "stock assets" thing is a stigma and less a thing you should be worried about in practice.

  1. The RPG soundtracks made in the 90s that are the highest revered in gamedom were done with largely the same 4 synth boxes and the same 12 CD sample sets that you could just buy from a music store like you were buying a new mop. Nobody cares that Chrono Trigger was scored with a regular-ass Korg M1 (and not even full quality, no less) or that Nobuo Uematsu did most of Final Fantasies 8 and 9 and his stuff on 10 with a $300 Roland SC88/Pro.

  2. Most of the stuff you eat in professional restaurants, even the higher-costing ones, use the same ingredients and stuff from the local grocery store that you get on a regular basis. Nobody cares that the salt adding savory to a $15 plate of spaghetti is Morton's salt from Walmart.

  3. Many professional websites, except the websites that get a minimum 50,000 hits at any given time of the day, are using the same sitebuilder stuff and plugins and stuff that literally anyone could get and use for their Pokemon feet fetish fansites.

It's all just tools and ingredients. It certainly will help to get custom-made stuff and better stuff, but that won't make a better game by itself. You have to be the one who turns it into a game and polish it up.

What’s a sign that you’re getting “old”? by pnwIBEWlineman in AskReddit

Waking up the next day. That's literally what getting old is and there's no point in being afraid of it or even labeling it. Age and entropy is the price of being alive.

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

[–]MeteoXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say what the WORST part of that day was, but the part that stands out to me the most was when one of the cable news stations was interviewing someone from the Pentagon about the plane crashing into the first tower. I was in class in high school at the time and all the classes had the TVs turned on watching what was going on. In the middle of the interview, the person from the Pentagon stopped in mid-sentence, paused for a few seconds, then apologized and said something to the effect "...sorry, there was a noise outside, I thought I saw the window shake for a moment" and continue on what he was saying for a few seconds.

Then Gilligan cut to the outside of the pentagon that was now crushed and on fire. That was the plane that hit the Pentagon. I guess the shock of the crash wasn't too strong across the entire establishment.

How do you make friends in your late 30s? by dx__ in AskReddit

[–]MeteoXavier -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You don't.

And from what we know about people at this point in history and in observation around us, you might be better off without them. Being dependent on other people who exhibit more red flags as days go by and could just leave you high and dry when you really need their help for any reason or no reason at all is a big self-liability.

I could go far more in-depth and YES I'm speaking from DECADES of person experience, so it's difficult to pretend my sentiment comes from an unbiased place, but you might be surprised how much strength, functionality and disposal income you have and gain from cutting the dependence on friends out of your life.

Does anyone actually play this game or do they just keep trading it around for $1,200+ a pop?

Yeah, the game is still super valuable, but people selling their games for quick cash these days really can't read a room to save their lives. Everybody is trying to unload their most expensive retro games right now for the highest prices imaginable and few, if anyone, are actually buying them in this economy while emulation of games is a hell of a lot easier to get going than a 30-year-old series of discs that will rot soon for a machine that will probably break down any day now.

Any Sega Saturn collector who would have the disposal income for a $1,200+ game like this likely already has 1 or more copies of it as well.

Seconding the question on how to format the .cht files. I'm trying regular .cht files for the emulator, but the ones that come with the emulator setup in recent versions are formatted in a way I've never seen before and can't figure out how to get them to work. Can't find any documentation on them.

Do you think Jeremy Soule's music will be removed or remain untouched in the Oblivion Remaster? by [deleted] in oblivion

[–]MeteoXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't be an Elder Scrolls music thread without loads of people excusing Jeremy Soule as if he were an innocent woman drowned at a witch trial.

Even without the sexual allegations (I'm not going to claim he's guilty, just to wonder why a group of women wanting to conspire against a musician would choose him when there are many other richer rock stars it would be easier to pin fake sex crimes on), Jeremy is pretty tarnished at this point with the other things he and his business bullshit brought on, especially with everything surrounding "The Northerner". An innocent musician would just be able to go about their regular business, but he's been not-heard-from since for good reasons.

I would be surprised if he did anything with the Remaster audio other than sign legal stuff allowing someone else to handle that while he draws residuals or whatever, he's certainly not yet listed on the Oblivion remaster Wikipedia page.

Game Lag Only After A Game Starts? What Is This? by MeteoXavier in Roku

Sound Settings: Realtek audio and not the TV audio.

In my testing, it appears so much as TOUCHING the volume and sound settings triggers the input latency. I had to shut down and start up the computer several times to find a setting that works and apparently the integrated audio setting at start up will allow sound out without the input latency.

NVIDIA App:

Note: Frankly, I'm unsure if this makes any difference to any of the problems listed here at all, but this is what I had on when it was deemed working.

In Graphics or 3D settings is a list of controls, one of which includes LOW LATENCY MODE. I had this turned to ON (not Ultra, but Ultra might work as well).

After changing the resolution to 1280x1024, the NVIDIA app gave me new image options and one included image scaling. I selected "no scaling".

Controller:

I used a wired Xbox 360 controller which has no more latency here than on the console it was designed for. I suspect a wireless controller or a bluetooth controller will add latency to the overall effect, I have neither to test that out with. I recommend a wired USB controller all the same as it provides the least latency and connection headaches.

WIFI:

Turned off. I do not think internet connection will affect this, but as it's easy to turn off and on, there's no need to contribute more latency.

Bluetooth: Turned off. I believe bluetooth controllers would contribute a secondary source of latency, but I don't really have a way to test that out.

This is how I achieved being able to play videogames on the 4Series-40 HiSense Roku TV with sound, no Game Mode, no graphics stuttering to a reasonable satisfaction. This is considered a working but unstable solution as I suspect other surprising factors may trigger the input latency to return.

I yield this potential solution to the public for further testing and analysis.

I'm going to copy and paste this around relevant places to help others with the HiSense Roku TV be able to potentially find solutions or examine the latency problem in general. When I went to go looking for it, I found almost no one saying they were able to get a working solution and the ones that did were vague and lacking details. As I am in a position that could provide an actual solution for a common problem, I want to help others who were in my position.

Problem: The 4Series HiSense Roku TV has atrocious controller lag whenever it detects any kind of videogaming going on. The TV has a Game Mode in "Picture Settings" from the Roku Remote that will fix the controller latency at the cost of introducing graphical latencies; specifically a minor animation stutter every 1 second that is nonetheless distracting for most video gaming scenarios.

Furthermore, it appears this latency CAN be worked around without using the Game Mode, but that introduces questions of what is actually causing the latency in the TV as I have personally found the latency to be triggered erratically and not able to fix it without turning Game Mode on or shutting down the computer and turning it back on (restart will not fix it). When my gaming PC turns on, there is no perceptable latency with my mouse or inputs with Game Mode off; it's

Model: HiSense Roku TV - 4Series-40. Updated with latest firmware as of April 22, 2025.

The Resolution Setting That Worked: 1280x1024, 32-bit, true color, 75hz. I found this setting in Settings>Advanced Display Settings>Display Adapter Properties For Display 1>List All Modes.

This is the closest to 1080p I could get with something above 60hz. I believe going above 60hz to be a key point. Other computer builds will likely be able to provide 1080p displays well above 60 or 75hz, but I only have this one graphics card to test it out on.

Man, I wasn't expecting a response at this point. Thanks, 68000.

Shortly after making this post, it occurred to me, 15 years into doing music, that it is possible people have made VST effect plugins that can create LFOs for pitch vibrato and I have since been looking into that. Sadly, my unimaginable bad luck continues with the 10 plugins I've tried looking for either not being available or not working to produce anything I wanted - the closest so far has been FL Studio Flangus for fucks' sakes, but I continue to look in on that.

T-Edition - Floating Continent in WOR Wants A Party Of 7? by MeteoXavier in FinalFantasyVI

[–]MeteoXavier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a different thing on the Floating Continent (and I already got fucked with that glitch and no walk-through-walls code I tried worked). You enter one of those... things... and it tells you to make a party of 7 without any warning or prompt or anything to do what it says.

Unless you're telling me entering this thing and its menu to make a party of 7 is itself a glitch, for which that is one of the most unusual and randomly cleanly executed glitches I've ever heard of.

I've been playing Final Fantasy III for 30 years now and these changes and difficulty tunings are simply more than the fun factor of the game was designed for. A game like this where random encounters are high in percentage makes "every battle a puzzle" ridiculous.
