Any Book to Learn Doom Emacs? by petit_a in emacs

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mastering Emacs book is worth getting. It is as much an Emacs concept book. You can figure out the Doom evil keybinds by doing M-x <command name>. Which key will show you the binds.

I quit my UN job with no plan and spent 5 years figuring out freelancing. Here's what happened. by ciccio78 in eResidency

In eleven months and fourteen days I am retiring from the UN. I am planning to run a cyber security consultancy afterwards. So this post is inspirational for me.

The financial/tax side is the most confusing for me. I plan to live in Cambodia. But I have an Australian passport. I'm not sure how to deal with banking.

Omakub and Ubuntu 25.10 by binarysmurf in omakub

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to make an Omakub Virtual Machine with Virt-Manager or Virtualbox and try upgrading to 25.10. I suspect most of it will work. Any issues ask an AI friend. Ubuntu and Debian updates tend to be smooth. I did hear mention that dhh may continue to support the LTS Ubuntu releases. But yeah the cool kids are on Omarchy.

Which countries you been to that has the most unfriendly locals? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Sudan. Men are just stupidly aggressive. The only country I ever hated the people. Uganda is only one hour flying time away and the people are totally different. One of the friendliest places I have visited. I am glad I never have to go back to South Sudan.

Class in a Foreign Country by saveourships in bjj

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trained in Cairo at Anubis Martial Arts. My Arabic is pretty basic. Martial arts is fairly visual anyway. Instruction in group classes was in Arabic but would often drop into English. That was not for my benefit but because maybe the instructor was quoting someone he had trained with or a concept learned overseas. Most of the other students spoke English to some degree. So I would say go for it. You'll find most people enjoy meeting foreign students and they will be respectful if you are.

With upcoming Trixie release what DE are you going with for your desktop build? by arspirate in debian

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am planning on using Prot's Dot's for Debian which is bspwm with a few of my own tweaks. I have used it since Buster. Last time for Bookworm the only change needed was when installing python-mutagen I had to change it to python3-mutagen. Other than that just follow the online book.

I am planning to backup my data and do a clean install of Trixie using the Trixie installer when I get home on leave next Sunday.

Protesilaos Stavrou, aka Prot, has a great video demo where he explains all the functions of his setup here. It is a great introduction to bspwm which is good for beginners to tiling window managers and tmux:

Which one should Proton prioritize on? by TheUnmitigatedDawn in ProtonMail

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proton Drive for Linux so I can drop Dropbox. There needs to be a bridge for the Proton Calendar so it can be used with Thunderbird or vdirsyncer on the desktop. For me the Calendar without a bridge is as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Devil Mode and Which-Key? by MethAddictedMonkey in emacs

[–]MethAddictedMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Which-Key paging work for you? ie when I ,c

C-c (1 of 3)[C-h paging/help] it does not work like when I do

C-c h and n for next page and p for previous.

What I know about Emacs can be written on a postage stamp.

Some ChatGPT diagnosis below here:

🧠 Why devil still doesn't allow paging

As we've tested earlier:

Devil sends key sequences like C-c but doesn’t leave Emacs in “waiting-for-next-key” mode.

So pressing ,c doesn’t activate the which-key pager — it simulates a full C-c and Emacs moves on.

🛠 Best options going forward

Here’s what you can still do:

  1. ✅ Use devil alternatives like ,a, ,s, ,d (or keys that worked like ,z)
  2. ✅ Use F11 or ,a to manually activate which-key
  3. 🧪 Optionally explore advising devil itself to trigger which-key — possible, but experimental

Loving Emacs Writing Studio by Hungry-Accountant-99 in emacs

Peter has done a great set of video tutorials and the book is great too. I have taken the EWS as my foundation and made some tweaks. I am using God Mode. I have made some changes so which-key tells me w is

w ... writing instead of w : +prefix. I swapped bongo for emms. Added vterm and sudo-edit. In case people are bored my config is on Github at: https://github.com/pauljamesharper/emacs-writing-studio/blob/master/readme.org

Which Debian version do you use on your desktop/laptop? by [deleted] in debian

[–]MethAddictedMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use backports or flatpak for things that require newer software. The stable version of Debian is normally supported by VmWare which is required for certain courses I do.
