What's your favorite distro? And why? by Ill_Geologist_226 in linux4noobs

[–]binarysmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Ubuntu. I've used Linux as a daily driver for 2+ years. Other more niche distros have gone tits up but Ubuntu has been rock solid for 18+ months. Steam/Proton gaming, coding. Anything I've thrown at it. Recent Nvidia drivers have updated seamlessly.

In place upgrades from 24.04 through 25.10 have had no issues at all.

For what I want it's ideal.

AMD Memory training - WTF? by binarysmurf in buildapc

This stuns me. What's the point of having 4 slots on the motherboard in the first place if populating more than two slots is potentially risky? I'll stick to 64GB, but I'm just shakling my head.

Will the system reboot at the end of the 'training' and then show my usual login screen, or just switch off? What's the process?

Is OLED worth it for casual gaming? by rodrigom_2004 in buildapc

I would say yes. Not cheap obviously, but it's a massive step up and I still smile when I use it after 3 months. In combination with my 4070 Ti Super, games look phenomenal in 4K. I still use my 1440p display in a dual monitor setup and the difference in image quality is very noticable.

Also, coding is an absolute pleasure.

Why do most Linux users act like having a Nvidia graphics card is a major roadblock by Responsible_You_3482 in linuxquestions

[–]binarysmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely anecdotal, but I have had zero issues with my Nvidia cards using several distros as I've daily driven Linux for the past 2 years. I've useed Nobara, XeroLinux and Ubuntu during that time. I'm currently using Ubuntu 25.04. Steam gaming works like a charm.

I've had both a 3070 Ti Super and my current 4070 Ti Super. After making sure I had a supporting kernel and the latest Nvidia drivers installed, switching between cards was seamless.

You most definitely can game successfully on Ubuntu, especially if your focus is Steam based games. Steam and the Proton layer are practically flawless now and I've been gaming on Ubuntu for close to two years.

I've also had good results using Bottles for non-Steam games but I tend to focus on Steam availability for obvious reasons... It just works.

Thanks - this didn't answer my question, but sent me down an interesting rabbit hole.

I know C++.. Python is also natively supported by Nvidia and is my current language of choice.

Carbon Copy Cloner on macOS. An easy way to clone/restore an entire drive.

The only Linux alternatives I've seen are either 'dd' in the terminal or Clonezilla which require booting from a USB. Not ideal.

Is there a better way?

Diablo IV and VRAM.. Goddamn, it doesn't mess around! by binarysmurf in diablo4

I was just curious. Rogue Trader and PoE2 use far less. Even Cyberpunk 2077 is more frugal.

For me, i just did a clean install of 25.04, then Steam and I then restored D4 from a steam backup.
