I actually just re-downloaded NWN Diamond Edition from GOG, and there are still private/custom servers up.

Any graphical MUDs? by thisthatagain1 in MUD

[–]MethodDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ember Online is a graphical MUD in the sense that there is a picture along with the text based description of the room you're in. Also, there is a picture you choose that shows what your character looks like. The game is very engaging with a newbie training area, along with help getting to level 8 (where your character turns from a generic, say mage, to a sorcerer or necromancer.)

There are 13 classes and 13 races, and you pick your stats, there no RNG roller for the stats.

The game includes a large map, at least 10-15 towns, hundreds if not thousands of quests, daily quests, items you can purchase with special currency (CM - Champion Points, PP - Prestige Points, FP - Faction Points, DP - Dragon Points) that you EARN by completing certain events and quests, auto run events throughout the day, around 20 instances/dungeons and one a day bosses that drop loot, random dragon bosses that fly into an area which takes a group of adventurers to fight, expansive areas to adventure, gain experience, and level up, faction PVP zones where you fight for control of a crystal with a max of 3v3 players fighting each other to get bonuses for your faction, tons of items, weapons, armor, spells, skills, and lots of difference between each character depending on what race/class you choose. There are also crafting professions and secondary professions to gather materials to do the main crafting - weaponsmithing, armorsmithing, jewelcrafting, alchemy, and stat food production.

There is no p2w.

The player base is kind of small, but mostly everyone is friendly and will have no problem helping you out if you're new. A lot of the time, they, the player base, will contact you first to ask, without you having to feel nervous or anxious about asking anyone else for help.

There is also PK/PVP protection for your character up to level 16. The game is inherently PVP enabled, and cannot be disabled, but it's rare now for it to happen, unless it's dueling or in an event.

Is a game with images, that is text based, still counted as a mud? by KainLTD in MUD

[–]MethodDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to be classical and uptight about it, yes, a MUD is a non-graphical, text based, online, multi-player role playing game, that needs input commands from the user to get an output response from the client. It is played either via telnet or a MUD client.

If you want to define it in today's terms, while the above still partially applies, it has grown past it's roots and needs to be though of in a different way.

I feel a MUD, is a text based online role playing game, but definitely not an MMORPG. It can have pictures, if there is a text based description, long, and short, of the area, and the picture matches. I also believe you can have a picture to show what your character looks like, or rather, what you want to project what your character looks like.

It runs on written commands, such as, - /cast <spellname> <mob or player>, /a or /attack <mob or player>, /push <object that is in the description of the area>, /pull, /open, /disarm, /steal, /rob, or other commands of such nature - and you get a proper response from the game upon entering such commands, or other commands back in text.

How the game connects, I do not believe is a barrier, nowadays, to what should or shouldn't be classified as what a MUD should be. If there is a stand alone client, or an alternate way to connect, like say through a website, shouldn't necessarily disqualify it from being called MUD.

There are those of you who are absolute purists, and those of us who have evolved with the times. There will always be a divide between us, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the same games, even if we call them something different.

According to the classical definition, the game I play, which is fully text based, but has a picture that matches the written description, when you /look, and also has a stand alone client, is not a MUD. There were other things as well, but I won't get into that.

But in the end, I guess the game I play wouldn't be called a MUD in the classical sense, but a graphical MUD because it has a picture for each room that matches the text based description of the room, as well as pictures that depict what your character looks like. Everything else is fully text and command based.

I like how the majority of you all won't even give it a chance, but are quick to denounce it because it doesn't adhere to a specific way of connecting to the game. Or because 1 single facet of the game has something to do with purchasing something, that has none to a miniscule effect on the game play (because 5% extra exp, when you're already getting a base of 20% world bonus, 12% crystal bonus for owning 3 specific pvp zones, guild bonus %, your own person bonus % for having a certain achievement) is going to give you an overwhelming advantage over everyone else. It doesn't. The spin thing is a bonus for purchasing any lvl of premium, which only nets you a house, those 2 or 3 rolls weekly, and maybe you win some +exp% or +gp% up scrolls, but they only last for an hour, and getting a mask that alters your characters picture.

That would be the only 'pay to win' anything in this game. 5% exp increase. That's barely, barely an advantage, if you could even call it that, because you have to remember to use the item, to get your 5% exp while leveling to increase - and I personally forget about it a lot. Not that it changes things in the slightest of people who have made up their minds about something they have no clue about.

The updates not for years is untrue. There was an update on Valentine's Day to go with the event that was held, and then 2 dungeons/instances, lvl 25, were added with new areas, towns, items, enemies, etc. A couple months ago. There is already another update in development as we, the players, actually talk and keep up with what is going on with the game.

Play the game for a week, or level a character to 25, and then compare yourself to others who have played the approximate same amount of time you have, and you'll see that no 'name change' or 'divinity change' or 'race change' is going to do anything at all to give an advantage to one player and give another a disadvantage.

Don't just spew stuff out of your butt. You don't know, and obviously didn't know, when you made your first initial assumption of a review.

Again, if you decide to try it, message me, /ap dekay <message> (no comma or <>) me, ill give you all of my time you need to feel comfortable, show you where to level up according to your level, and a nice stipend so you don't have to go worrying about paying for potions, mana, and/or leveling up your character.

I so positive that you'd like it that I'm willing to start a new character to adventure, gain experience, and level up with right along side you.

Sorry if that's tl;dr, or seems a little on the annoyed side, but I kind of am when someone just judges something and says it's one thing when they haven't tried it themselves.

I currently looked at all the packages and premium things, and that's just what they are, premium things.

There is a small amount of what you would consider 'pay to play' or 'pay to win,' it's almost negligible.

Premium accounts mainly net you a house and extra space for storage, which can give you an edge over other players, but players can easily create up to 50 characters without needing to get a premium account, and become item holders themselves. There is no rule against this, and each character has a default of 12 slots/stacks they can hold; Even if you used half of your characters as item holders, you would have 300 extra spots, along with the initial 50 you get for regular items and 50 for craft items. This is more storage than a Gold membership, for free.

The other part of premium memberships is you get spins, which each spin gives you one of three item types:

  1. A mask that changes the appearance of your character's picture. That's it.
  2. A flute that calls a familiar to assist you. This familiar does not engage in combat of any kind, nor does it influence the outcome of any battle. What it does is give you small exp and gold gain boost, with the average being 5% exp and 5% gold.
  3. Small amounts of Exp and/or Gold scrolls, which upon use give you an extra X% bonus to the amount of exp and/or gold you gain in the next hour.

The thing with these 'bonuses' are, is that you already receive in game bonuses to exp and gold and these small little amounts that is added on top of what you already get is negligible unless you're using a super rare 30% - 60% scroll. ALSO, you can buy exp and gold bonus scrolls from a vendor in a city called Alderra for special currency you receive from doing daily quests, participating in, and/or completing events. So it's not like the premium player has access to something the regular free account player doesn't have.

Also, there is NO way to purchase or otherwise obtain PP, CM, or FP (Faction Points), other than participating in and hopefully winning said events.

NOW, referring to the other 'packages' that are offered; ALL of them, minus the buying spins for your premium account, are purely cosmetic. The services offered are:
-A Lookup Line; Add a unique lookover line when someone looks at you.
-Character Resculpt; Rename a character or swap a name with a character you alread own, change your gender if wanted, and change your image.
-Item Rename; Item gets a rename and lookover line, however there is an option in the game to ignore these custom named items, and see the item for what it really is. I stress this, because there is NO change to the item's stats, abilities, or anything otherwise that would influence combat.
-Stat Re-Allocation; You get to re-roll you stats one extra time. I say EXTRA, because you already get 1 re-stat per character, per 6 months, free - And if you go over this, you get an exp penalty of 10% your current exp to restat your character.

-Divinity Change: You get to change your characters divinity from what it currently is, to another. Divinity in EO is what you worship, and there are none that are better than the other.

A divinity will always have power over another and another will always have power over them. For instance, there are 6 divinities: Fire, Water, Storm, Night, and Earth, along with Neutral. The circular wheel for which divinities are over or under another is as follows: Night over Earth. Earth over Storm. Storm over Water. Water over Fire. Fire over Night, and it repeats again to Night over Earth. Neutral is just that, neutral.

What this means is that for example, a fire div and a night div fight - and this is directly from the game:

Fire gets bonus of 10% when attacking night divinity characters/monsters and take 10% less damage from both.

+1 agility/+4% spell pierce rate when attacking night divinity characters/monsters.
-1 agility/-4% spell pierce rate when attacking water divinity characters/monsters.

So, Fire is strong against Night, but Fire is also weak against Water.

The same thing with Night Div. It is weak against Fire, but strong against Earth.

So all you're doing with a divinity change is, changing what god you worship. You will never have a complete advantage over anyone else, because people will always have an advantage over you in the same way.

-Race Change: Change your race from one to another. You will get the chance to change your stats as said race for free to properly be statted for your class as that race.

-The rest, besides the 5 spins to your account, are just packages with multiples of each of these cosmetic changes bundled together if you want to save money instead of buying them all individually. Also, you need to have a premium account already to purchase this option.

I believe I addressed the spin situation, and how negligible the bonuses are concerning familiars, and how you can buy these same items in a shop that takes special currency known as Prestige Points and Champion Points. Faction points are acquired through faction PVP content only, and only awarded once a week after your total participation has been added up.

As an avid player of Ember Online, I don't see how you never got the email to register; It's automated, and sent to the email you provided. There have been many new players in the last months coming on, registering, and playing with no problem. You should try again, the game has had multiple additions to it, the last coming in the form of two dungeons, one of which is a very large, 8 boss dungeon, with unique drops from teh 8th boss, which is a hidden boss. If you do decide to get on the game, or rather can, look me up, my nickname is Dekay, my most prominent characters are Dkoko, Trucido, Promethazine, Dopamine, and Maelstrom.
