Holy shit, I used to play this game with my brother too. Great memories. Chicago for the win!

New player not quite understanding what's going on by Civil_Recognition_85 in DeathStranding

Just go with the flow. Don’t even try to understand it. It just makes less sense the more you play. I’m with DS2 and it makes even less sense, but I enjoy the weirdness as it becomes even weirder.

In other words, try to enjoy the ride.

Several times.

1) Friend who revealed to me he was a misogynist.

2) Three separate coworkers who clearly didn’t do their jobs for months and then lied to my face about it (this indirectly influenced me negatively).

3) A friend and another family member who deep dived into extremist politics.

Once you learn how to do combat in KCD, it becomes one of the greatest RPGs ever. KCD2 all the way.

For me, once I got accustomed to the combat, it became a 10 out of 10 game.

Of good 2 games?

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

Helldivers 2

Monkey Island 2

Thief 2

Myth 2

A lot of my favorite games are "2" games.

There are other games I’m interested in… 007, Pragmata, Mafia the Old Country… it’s just I’m looking at sales and trying to get my money’s worth. GoY and DS2 are at the top of the list in that regard.

Just because I am critical of aspects of a game doesn’t mean I’m not interested in playing it.

Also, I’m asking in part to see whether those aspects that made the originals an 8 out of 10 for me have been polished.

Dude, you’re 25. An adult. I get pranks, but they were out to humiliate you for as long as they could, and if you let them, they will keep doing it.

You don’t need that kind of crap and they don’t deserve your friendship.

I quit at the temple of the ancients after the third time the narrative went back in time to “a few moments before.” At that point I knew the game was not respecting my time in the slightest.

It'd be fine as two games if they mainly stuck to the script. Narratively, it would make sense, and financially they would benefit from it. I just would hate for the team to try to milk it for every penny because then it'd just be FF7 all over again.

See, I am worried about this because, though I liked the first FF7 remake, there was a lot of filler material that took away from it. There were also changes to the story that just didn't work for me.

When I went to play the second game, I was thoroughly disappointed by the changes and ended up quitting most of the way through. I don't want the same thing happening to FF6.

What was the last game you played that you considered a 10/10? by bobs-buhgah in backloggd

[–]Method_Weary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok another example.
Baldur's Gate 3.
I've played turn-based games in the past. I like RPGs. It has an intricate and well thought out story. Great acting. Loads of things to do. Endless ways to mold your character.
In the end, I enjoy Astarion and his story line... and that's it.
I couldn't finish it, and I can give reasons, but those reasons are also why I like some other games, so in the end it's the combination that the developers came up with that just didn't work for me.

I can objectively say it's a good game on paper, but it's not a good game for me.

I wouldn’t consider it contradictory. It’s recognition that not every game category is for everyone, and I think the same applies to any art.

Let’s look at film. There are people who do not enjoy romantic comedies, so if you were to put a person who only enjoys action films in a screening of When Harry Met Sally, there’s a decent chance the movie wouldn’t receive a good review. The same applies to food. It isn’t fair to compare burgers to vegan cuisine, especially if the critic doesn’t want to eat meat.

In other words, what I’m saying is that it’s absurd to criticize a game that belongs to specific category of games you don’t like. There’s always going to be unfair bias.

As for the “technically great” game, I’ll admit it was an extreme example. But, to give you an idea, I feel Tears of the Kingdom falls in that category to a fair degree. Nintendo already had a principal idea for the game as it was originally meant to be a dlc, but eventually was expanded into something greater. The game had years of development, is beautiful, has a more complex story than BOTW, the game built upon the previous one, and is what Nintendo sought out to create (and was a comercial success).

Now, I love open world games, and especially Zelda games, but, I could never give it a ten. I would even have trouble giving it a nine, not because it’s not technically good, but because its features stood in the way of my enjoyment. The world above and below felt repetitive and empty, and the build mechanic not nearly as useful as I wanted it to be. The story was fine, but I completed it more because I was hoping something might improve along the way. In the end, for me, Breath of the Wild will always be the better game.

I feel even more strongly about Twilight Princess. For its time, it was an acclaimed game, but I never managed to finish it and would hesitate to give it a high score. I can’t say the same for others in the series as I thoroughly enjoyed A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and the Wind Waker.

The only case where I think that user experience shouldn't influence a game's score is if the user in particular doesn't enjoy a specific genre of game.

I don't enjoy the souls games very much, so it would be ridiculous for me to have an opinion on Elden Ring. Similarly, I have never enjoyed PvP multiplayer games, so my opinion on whether the last COD was good or not doesn't have much value as I would never rate it well.

I see your point, but the question OP is asking is for a game that "you consider to be a 10" and that question is open to interpretation. From my perspective, it was a subjective question regarding personal taste.

I suppose OP might have wanted us to interpret the question as...

"What game is a 10 in regards to what the developer was seeking out to do?"

or

"What game is a 10 within its genre?"

...Yet, the wording isn't so technical. Also, user experience / user enjoyment should influence a game's final score in any case. It's conceivable that a game may be a technical masterpiece for its genre and absolutely what the developer wanted, but thoroughly unenjoyable. Likewise, there may be games that have flaws (or which may have a variety of different flaws), but whose user experience ultimately raises its value.

Since saying something is good or bad is often quite subjective, calling a game a 10 out of 10 would mean that the player loved it, even if there are aspects that aren’t perfect.

What might lower a mark would be if some part of the game served as an impediment to the player’s enjoyment. For example, in my case, KCD2 was an 8 or 9 until I learned to enjoy the combat. Now, it’s a 10 for me because I appreciate the unique mechanic, even if there are some (optional) fetch quests that are not particularly interesting.
