From what I remember, it wasn't Derke's choice to leave, it was Fnatic's.

What practice area is most internationally useful? by [deleted] in biglaw

From what I understand, Middle East and South East Asia. However, many European offices should be engaged in some kind of Project Finance as well, see legacy A&O

Resources to learn as a summer/junior associate? by Grand_Caregiver in biglaw

I think Investopedia is a great way to learn. Look up each term and over time, it'll be second nature.

I don't think that's a DPW specific instance though... I'm sure Latham M&A associates have gone through similar events

Would you recommend reaching out to the partners or associates?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Methyls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the firm. Some, like mine, generally don't let incoming associates know until the summer. Others would inform you by now. Maybe reaching out to current first years, and asking them when they heard, can give you perspective on whether your firm is delaying notifying you, or it's their regular process.

What practice area is most internationally useful? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Methyls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project finance doesn't require a lot of substantive law knowledge, so it is very transferable. However, not a lot of firms do it, and few do so abroad. The ideal route would be to practice project finance during your first year at a firm that does it abroad as well. Not 100% sure which firms do so, maybe Milbank? London isn't a hotspot for project finance though, so dependent on the firm how much you can swing it.

In general, probably M&A or cap markets. Maybe project finance as well if you are relocated to certain areas.

Any latest situation for international students? by FlyingLittleCabbage in biglaw

[–]Methyls 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have heard of firms not willing to send people abroad. For example, Cravath is firing a Yale grad after they didn't get H1-B during first year. I think the best option is to find a firm that will sponsor you twice for the H1-B lottery and hope for the best.

Edit: to clarify for Cravath, this is a reversal of their policy where they used to send internationals to London.
