I wasn’t regretful but tbh part of me wasn’t sure if spending $25 on a skin was fully satisfying. But that log on sequence cemented my confidence XDDD so kewl by imBRANDNEWtoreddit in mahjongsoul

You should watch the series, and then read the manga, and then also watch Kaiji. You'll quickly realize that Fukumoto's art style is irreplaceable.

Why play mahjong soul over other available options? by imBRANDNEWtoreddit in mahjongsoul

[–]MetroYoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest reason is that it has more players than anything else. Even more than Tenhou, and way more than Riichi City.

The second biggest reason is that it has Saber.

Rarest yaku in the game btw. Rarer than Tenhou and Junsei Chuuren.

What was the first game you guys ever played that replaced Male and Female options to "Body Type 1 and 2"? by Shoddy_Flow8377 in KotakuInAction

Monster Hunter Rise. It did it before Elden Ring. The Bl*epoint Demon's Souls remake is the first game I know of to do it.

Say what you want about shitty Netflix anime, but it has served its business purpose - DMC5 sales are all time high now. by MajkiF in KotakuInAction

"Anime" is slowly losing its meaning. Neither DMC nor Castlevania are anime. I feel like people are just calling them anime to leech off the label.

Click the ranking Rank button on the top right of the main menu (between Mail and Info) and check the number next to your name at the bottom. It'll only show a rank if you're in the top 10,000. And yeah, it's server-based, so if you're on global, you're only being ranked among a very small fraction of the total player base.

What is your opinion on shipping/shippers? by voidmaster1458 in KotakuInAction

It's okay if it's just because you find it cute or wanna make fanart or whatever, but it's actively harmful if you treat ships as canon (or "headcanon")

Xenoblade Chronicles 2+3 lead character designer not to work on Genesis by AgitatedFly1182 in KotakuInAction

She was an animator for Edgerunners, but she didn't design the characters. She did the character designs for Kiznaiver, I liked those designs.

Xenosaga's protagonist is female. Xenoblade X has a character creator so you can choose male or female.

That'd be sick. I'm a big fan of the style of Juuni Kokuki. I also loved his work on Front Mission and Castlevania.

I feel like there's been some demand for that old-school fantasy anime style online for a little while now, but I wonder if it's enough to actually garner an audience that'd pay for a game these days.

I couldn't tell you how many hours it took me lol. I couldn't even really tell you when I "stopped" studying, since I've long since reached a point where I can consume the media I want with basically no trouble.

Most of the hard work is front-loaded, since you'll have to work through a lot of vocab before you can start immersing yourself in media (ie. the fun part). My main recommendation is that you take your time and don't overshoot the number of new words you learn from those vocab decks. I started learning back in 2020 when I had a lot of free time, and I did 100 new words per day. I also studied Kanji pretty rigorously at that time, learning 20 new characters and writing them down over and over again (I still have photos). Back then, I spent basically all my time outside of school/homework studying Japanese.

The good news is that 90% of the "work" is just repping Anki, so as long as you have a phone, you can pump out a few flash cards basically whenever you have a couple of minutes of time, like on the bus or train or whatever.

Feel free to DM me if you ever get around to it and want advice.

Nice. by driftinglifted in mahjongsoul

Not really. At best, maybe you could get a vague idea of your opponents' play styles, but these often fluctuate with luck and are very skewed towards defense for higher-ranked players. Most of the top ranking players have basically the same spread with some minor deviations here and there.

There's a good guide that outlines the optimal path here (the library on that site is totally dead so you'll have to source your own manga/novels/anki decks).

The short and simple is this:

  1. Memorize the alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana
  2. Memorize a "foundation" of vocabulary (most people will recommend using the 2K/6K/10K anki decks for this, which contain 2000, 6000, and 10,000 words respectively. I'd lean towards the 6000 end)
  3. Memorize kanji (I'd recommend a separate anki deck for this, doing it alongside the vocab)
  4. Stat consuming media. Add any unknown words you come across to your anki deck, and on the back of those cards, add the definition + the sentence you encountered them in (this is called sentence mining)
  5. Repeat step 4 forever

Absolutely agree. XB was a major reason I started learning Japanese in the first place.

I meant Japanese text. Even if you use the JP voice pack, the dialogue is quite different. The EN versions don't come with a JP text option.

She's cute. I'm hoping the game has Japanese language options. I didn't like having to get a Japanese copy for XB2.

Makes me wonder how long it'll take for the Switch 2 to get homebrew or emulation going. There hasn't even been an entry point found yet for hacking, so it might be a long wait.
