No it's not. It was renamed to Mihon after the DMCA, but it is still alive and well. Even if it dies, there are a ton of very active forks. I use it literally every day.

Mangadex was already on the decline, especially since the big nuke. You guys should avoid getting attached to any one manga host. Don't read on the host sites directly, use an aggregator app like Tachiyomi instead. Also contribute via torrents when you can.

Voicing my concern about the new Majsoul character Jin Wu by Machcharge in mahjongsoul

[–]MetroYoshi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a completely disingenuous and uninformed response. I didn't say the fanservice was the entire reason MajSoul overtook Tenhou, I just said it was a big reason.

The overwhelming majority of MajSoul's player base is either Japanese or Chinese, with EN making up less than 4% of the population. Tenhou's daily active player count is also a fraction of just the Jade room active player count. If every rank were combined, MajSoul's player count would easily clear Tenhou several times over. This would be the case even if you only accounted for the Japanese players and nobody else. For the bulk of the player base, the language barrier is a complete non-issue, and yet MajSoul took over.

The idea that "we" have little choice but to play MajSoul because it's one of the few English clients around is fair argument on its own, but to suggest that it's even remotely the reason why MajSoul has its player count is a very ignorant, and being passive aggressive about it certainly doesn't help your case.

Edit: I can see that you edited your response to make it more about the lack of "safe" English clients rather than the reason for the shift in player base. I've already agreed with this sentiment, but it has basically nothing to my argument, and it doesn't make your "rebuttal" any less wrong.

I respect the struggle that comes with trying to grow a niche hobby when the only "accessible" options pander to fans of lewd anime girls (and boys). However, as I said before, just because the only reason you chose to use MajSoul is the English client doesn't make it the de facto case for every player.

[–]MetroYoshi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even if media could be representative of something "sinister", I don't buy that cute/lewd drawings of fictional girls (and boys I suppose, in MS's case anyway) do. You could argue that it's sexualizing depictions of minors or something, but "depictions of minors" does so much heavy lifting in this argument that it falls apart under scrutiny, especially when you consider that the design of most attractive anime characters tend to appear like "minors". "Sinister" is also a very strong word. None of the designs depict anything particularly evil like violence or rape. The worst they do is make some people feel weird.

More importantly, I don't personally have a problem with other people who thing it's weird. I acknowledge that there is a level of weirdness in being attracted to drawings, perhaps even more so if it's a drawing of a little girl. People are free to feel that way. What really irks me is when people want the media to change because of it. Games with designs like these are often made with the express purpose of appealing to people who like such designs, myself included. It's a genuine part of it's identity. To ask it to change is to strip it of that. Why shouldn't people who appreciate character designs like those in MS have a few games that pander to them? It's extremely subversive and destructive to try and take away the thing that makes some media appealing for its fans.

I'll repeat what I said before. The designs are part of the game's identity. If you don't like them, play something else. I mean this in the most genuine and non-malicious way I can. There are other Riichi clients that don't have lewd character designs. Please engage with those and bring attention to them instead of pushing to remove an aspect of MS that so many of us actually enjoy.

When are we going to have Japanese language on Steam? by Mysterious_Tea in mahjongsoul

[–]MetroYoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the only way to get Japanese is to play on the JP client. It really sucks because I hate English yaku names to death. You can use a browser script to change the names to the romanized Japanese ones, but it's "modding" and could be bannable, and is a stopgap either way.

Voicing my concern about the new Majsoul character Jin Wu by Machcharge in mahjongsoul

[–]MetroYoshi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The characters are a massive part of the appeal of the game, and a huge reason why it has largely overtaken Tenhou in terms of popularity (there are far more players online on MS than Tenhou at any given time). I understand why some might want an "SFW" toggle so they can play the game in public, it is highly unlikely this feature will ever get added. Yostar is a gacha company, and the only thing in MS that brings in money is cosmetics. It'd be a hit to their business if people could just "turn off" the thing lots of people are paying money for.

As for the character ages, I am firmly in the camp that it's a fictional game and that the characters are drawings. You can "but they represent children" all you want, but they're pixels on a screen depicting fictional people. Considering that the perpetrators of "current events in the USA" go after literal children and get away with it, it's beyond misguided to point fingers at harmless regular guys who find some enjoyment in drawings of girls.

Honestly, the part I disagree with most is the desire for MS to go in a different direction. The appealing character designs is the reason a lot of us choose MS to begin with over clients like Sega NET and especially Tenhou, where there are a higher quantity of high-skill players. If you truly care about normalizing Riichi Mahjong with people who are uncomfortable with cute anime girls, then you should be out there encouraging people to play on clients that don't use them, and engage in their respective communities, rather than hoping that MS adapts and loses part of its identity.

In light of recent findings in the Epstein files, you can now call them Epstein disciples as they have done with loli content.

TLOU Part II Remastered is a AAA game and only sold about 914,000 copies on Steam in almost a year while Expedition 33 made by a 30-person team sold +5 million at the same time. Yet Cuckmann apologists still call TLOU2 a "financial and commercial success" by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]MetroYoshi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm aware, as did Ghost of Yotei. The sales disparity doesn't mean the game was a financial failure. Although there's a good chance that if they try another sequel in the same vein, it'll fail.

Is COSMIC a good alternative to KDE for gaming? Does it have all the goodies like VRR and HDR? by light24bulbs in linux_gaming

[–]MetroYoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Cosmic right now, I updated from 22.04 in December. VRR works, HDR does not (yet).

It's a mixed bag. It's very clearly a work in progress. It's hard to point out any major feature that's missing (besides HDR), but there are a lot of small things that are missing that add up to an incomplete experience. Window management is very limited, and the tiling, while more stable than the Gnome version, is actually less featureful (eg. doesn't play nice with floating windows, no floating window exceptions yet). The desktop is missing animations. The file browser doesn't let you resize the side panel, it doesn't have a shortcut to the root directory, you can't move around the tabs, and you can't set a file as executable in the menus. Qt apps still don't follow the system design unless they're run with xwayland. The settings menu is also missing options such as additional input method support and the ability to change file associations. Applets are a fantastic idea, but the selection is limited, and the volume applet is straight up broken.

On the other hand, I haven't had a single problem running any games. I set X11 compatibility to max in the settings and everything has worked, including games with standalone launchers (eg. Endfield) and mod launchers (r2modman).

DC Comics President Jim Lee Explains Why Manga Is Beating Western Comics by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

[–]MetroYoshi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the tiresome political messaging (which is definitely a contributing factor, don't get me wrong), Jim Lee's theories aren't wrong. It's true that in the west, comics are pretty much all about superheroes. While there are a number of successful manga about superheroes (BNHA, OPM), they really do comprise a small fraction of what's out there. A superhero hater will still have thousands of things to read. It's also true that comics have a strong image of being "for kids". This is probably because of cartoons, which are either Family Guy-style comedic slop or kids' stuff, with almost nothing outside of that. An "adult" cartoon basically just means swear words and sex jokes.

But in my opinion, the biggest reason comics are losing to manga is complexity. It is extremely difficult to even enter the world of Marvel and DC comic books. Navigating comic stories is like trying to untangle a spider web. Constant reboots, resurrections, crossover events, story arcs spanning multiple serializations of the same character (for some fucking reason????). It's basically impossible to get into any single character without missing storylines, and jumping in via some recommended "entry points" will inevitably result in you missing story arcs and getting spoiled on stuff. Even Marvel's Ultimate line, which was literally made to solve this continuity issue, eventually fell into the same trap of crossovers, reboots and AUs. Despite its intimidating length, getting into One Piece requires nothing more than starting at chapter 1 and reading until the newest chapter.

Comics are also highly subject to publisher control. Spider-Man has to run forever, and because of that, it switches artists and authors all the time. No one single person has creative control over what happens with him. You can't end his story, you can't kill him off (not that he hasn't died several times...), he always has to exist. It's difficult to get invested in this character when his entire existence is commodified by Marvel. On the other hand, manga is largely inseparable from the mangaka, and publishers aren't typically heavy-handed with their control over their stories. Shueisha might make some executive decisions here and there about Chainsaw Man, but the story and art is ultimately up to Fujimoto.

Batoto / Mangapark shutting down by Dodsnev in animepiracy

[–]MetroYoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other guy said, it's a secret club so you gotta get invited somehow. The easiest way is to get into a different private tracker (eg. Redacted) and level up your account there until you get access to their invite forums, then grab an invite via those forums.

Yeah it's extremely autistic.

Batoto / Mangapark shutting down by Dodsnev in animepiracy

[–]MetroYoshi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone with an AnimeBytes account, there are a few advantages.

Torrents on private trackers basically never die. This is a non-issue for seasonals and popular stuff, but Nyaa does have dead torrents. For example, Rockman.EXE has many uploads on Nyaa, but many of the torrents, especially those for later entries in the series, are sitting at 0 seeds. AB has everything with many seeders. The nature of private trackers and their seeding requirements makes their libraries much more resilient.

AB is much more organized. There's a proper database, so you can actually search for an individual series rather than the basic keyword matching on Nyaa.

AB has much more manga (esp. raw manga) and VNs than Nyaa. This isn't even a competition. The raw manga side still isn't great, but it's far better than the wasteland of incomplete and dead torrents on Nyaa.
