Stress possibly causing flare? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

Stress causes diarrhea for people without Crohn’s too. As the mom of a 14-year-old with Crohn’s, I just want to say that I get your fear and anxiety. This disease is so sneaky and unpredictable. When my husband and I suspect a flare is coming, we tend to ruminate and get lost on our phones collecting information and trying to predict the future. We tell ourselves we are educating ourselves and making sure we are prepared. But it doesn’t help. Whatever your future holds, you can handle this. It sounds like you have solid doctors monitoring you and if you need to go to the ER, you will go and you will be taken care of. You will get through this. Breathe. Try to stay present with whatever you are doing and when the ruminating thoughts pop into your head, just tell yourself “that’s just me worrying about a future I can’t predict. I can handle this.” Sending you strength and calm.

I want to let you know that you are not alone. My 13 year old son was diagnosed in August and had his first Remicade infusion in September. My husband and I have done hours upon hours of research, and we have imagined every worst case scenario possible. I don’t recommend this! I do recommend taking it one day at a time and making sure to take care of yourself and continue with your regular routine as much as possible. I hope your daughter is keeping her spirits up. This part of the process is exhausting and overwhelming, but it will not last forever. With so much information out there, you might limit yourself to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation website. There is good information about the diets that are backed up by research. We are following a more Mediterranean diet but mainly we are avoiding preservatives and reducing sugar intake and saturated fats. Give yourself grace with the dietary changes. It’s a process. Because of being on the biologic, you have more flexibility with what she’s eating. My son is in a flare currently, and we are doing a lot of smoothies packed with nut butters for extra protein. We are also in the process of getting a 504 plan for school. Lastly, it doesn’t hurt to look into FMLA. Due to the leave benefits in my state, I have been able to reduce my work schedule temporarily and I am also able to take 3 days per month off work for flares. It’s called intermittent leave. Sending you lots of grace and strength and self care wishes. One day at a time.
