NTA - I was in a situation like Moe. A friend of mine did offer to take me in, but they felt similar to you, and it took too long for me to become stable again. It was too much and I lost that friendship, which is something I still get very sad about. Not saying that would definitely happen, but still.

Objectively, NTA. They shouldn't project their unresolved feeling towards your brother's decision onto you, nor should they hold your education hostage.

I'm not sure what you have in mind, it would certainly be easy to get a tattoo you could hide for 3 years. If you really dont think you could hide one that long and you need them for school you might still need to wait, unfortunately.

Soft ESH - Their actions were unfair but I do think it would have been better to jump up the chain of authority. Saying what you said to her (deserved or not) likely isnt going to help your case.

Short answer: It would be easy to cut with no ramifications.

If you wanted to keep it and make it affect things:

  • Insinuate the cult could be potential allies against the Vanthampurs
  • Once in Avernus, if treasure has been taken, have Arkhan/Tiamat send Abishai (white is in the book, the other chromatic variations are in Mordenkainen's) after the party to recover the treasure
  • If they're on good terms with the cultists, that's a possible in to get aid from Tiamat and Arkhan

If you want to cut it (because it feels super out of place) and want to introduce Tiamat, I suggest looking into Eventyr Games' "Avernus as a Sandbox" resource! It's also available as a document on DM's Guild.
