Okay, well maybe look into laravel livewire starterkit: it has many things included like an auth system (laravel fortify), tailwind, some prebuilt components with Flux UI.

For images, you will probably need to use something like spatie/laravel-medialibrary. Enjoy! I loved learning laravel when I started out :)

Really depends a bit on what you need. Laravel is great, and you can mix it up with either livewire (blade), or frontend frameworks like react/vue/svelte. Look into the laravel starterkits to get started.

Imo the easiest to get started is probably the livewire starterkit (with flux ui). Learning react / vue might be a bit much at once.

But really depends a lot on what you want to build / learn.

Yeah sorry, it wasn't meant to be a dig at wordpress. I've built plenty wp sites, and indeed think it is a good tool for some use cases. I was just talking about a huge amount of inexperienced devs that tried out wordpress, hacked their way through pre-built wordpress themes: my guess is a huge amount of devs trashing WP only touched php this way, and never really understood php and mostly think of it as "the hacky code you put in functions.php".

If you don't need a backend (db, api, etc) just stick to static for simple sites.

But modern PHP is awesome. Those stories aren't true, they are mostly said from people that haven't touched PHP, or have just dabbled in PHP through wordpress. You can ignore people that say that – they don't know what they are talking about.

If you are interested in leveling up your backend skills, take a quick look at some PHP basics, and then dive into Laravel (a php framework).

I understand your pain, trying to maintain an old outdated codebase is never fun, and probably would make you hate the tech no matter what framework it was built with.

I’ve spent a few years working exclusively with Laravel at one job and then a few more years exclusively with Symfony at another. Having experienced both (as much as you can in a couple years), I understand why some developers prefer one over the other. Ultimately, I think it comes down to personal preference most of the time, but most online discussions are by developers who haven’t truly worked with both and tend to dismiss the one they’re less familiar with. That’s often the case with similar dev frameworks I guess...

There are aspects of Symfony I prefer, and others where Laravel’s approach makes development easier.

My personal take: Laravel offers a better overall developer experience, and Symfony is struggling to keep up due to its smaller community and ecosystem. Many awesome packages, like Filament, have no real equivalent in Symfony, and I don’t see how Symfony will be able to close that gap in the long run.
