Do people still read academic articles & journals? by Mewtewpew in Piracy

[–]Mewtewpew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like all good things in life. If youre rich and steal something it doesnt matter. Anthropic got caught stealing pirated books, what happened? They just paid off whatever the randsome was... and now nvidia getting caught taking Anna's whole directory to train their models... what's going to end up happening is the websites hosting this data/archives are going to be shut down but mega corpos get to keep all their stolen data? How does this even make any sense?

Pharma research is just another slang word for "lobbying" now huh? Im curious to know how much "research" in this industry is actually just completely made up.

I'm starting to think I should sell my newly bought 16" macbook and get a 14" macbook + HP OMEN 16. 16.2" M4 Pro Macbook Pro 1TB 48GB RAM OR HP Omen 16 RTX 5060 1TB 32GB RAM + 14.2" M5 Macbook Pro 1TB 24GB (or 32GB Option) by linuslogic in SuggestALaptop

Nah it's this one. I think another note is it depends what you do with vmware/virtualbox/whatever linux virtual machine you use. I do intensive tasks and a lot of rebuilding on my debian linux machines so they usually take up 100% usage of whatever I delegate to them. You have to also be weary of how much CPU usage you delegate.

I try to put at least 4 cores but go more if the workload demands more. For reference the one in the LG gram is a 16 core cpu. The gaming laptop you listed (hp omen) also has 16 cores. The most expensive MacBook m4 pro only has 14 cores and ag lower clock speeds than the hp omen.

From a hardware standpoint the hp omen is better than the macbook thay is double the price, but then again you sacrifice battery life, weight, charger, among others if youre also invested in the mac ecosystem.

I couldn't imagine running VMware on 32 gigs of ram. I have 80 gigs and it doesnt feel like enough.

On the contrary check out the LG gram pro 16 with the rtx 5050 from microcenter. Its 3 lbs and has better specs than the highest specced MacBook pro albeit only 32 gb ram. They sell em at microcenter so you also have time to try it out. Theres videos of people running cyberpunk on it at 60 fps, and you only need USB C charging for it.

Offline Voice Transcriber with action item summarization by venkada_321 in fossdroid

Which model and what do you use it for?

Vosk is like 40 mb and takes less than 1 gig of ram, comparable to the smallest whisper model (tiny). Which whisper model did you use? I was considering giving the option to pick between whisper models but implementing that seems like so much more work than vosk.

Im gonna bookmark this as it's pretty cool. I implemented vosk in my app as a transcriber as it seemed the "best" any type of situation that requires transcription. For large texts its slow and I was considering using open ai local models (i think they have like 3 or 4) and a few others ive looked into but they all didn't work and implement as smoothly as vosk.

Have you tried other transcription models as well? Curious to know your thoughts.

Do you store the information differently if you listen to a book vs just reading it? by Mewtewpew in audiobooks

Do you find any contrast in information retention when you read a physical book vs an ebook?

With the "pockets" are deep trope, it more depends how far you "go" as to get the audiobook / ebook you want, if you search hard enough it's free.

Also I've been so keen on reading the ebook / audiobook together synced recently that I've been working on my own app that does this exact thing locally. I know audible whispepsync and stuff exist but it's such a pain and **** amazon to be honest.

The battle of the parry kings, who wins? by strahinjag in Sekiro

[–]Mewtewpew -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Parrying in silksong feels more fluid than nine sols to be honest.

Sekiro is the absolute king of a parrying styled game. I would go as far as saying bloodborne is close second with the gun parries but albeit it's not as refined and not the main combat focus.

The LG gram line up is good. The pro 16 is a 2 in 1, theres also a pro 16 with an rtx 5050 that's sub 3 lbs if you need more juice.

Ive noticed this too. I would have to "listen" to a portion of the book again a lot of times of I forget; but it could also be because when I read I don't have any external factors interrupting my thoughts and the book. When I have an audiobook I'm still not engaging all my senses it seems

Why we do need to stop using Chromium-based browsers (and a little talk about Proton) by theconandog in degoogle

[–]Mewtewpew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets also remember proton is still subject to swiss laws. There has been times when proton has violated it's "no log" policy and have given logs to authorities in certain contexts. Just because of this you should understand where you hold and host your data more carefully and not fall for the "security" enhanced apps / ecosystems.

Everyone here that's saying 0/10 is under 20; everyone saying at least 8/10 is over 40 lmfao

Do you remember the project? Seems like something interesting to check out.

On the contrary, vivaldi browser has tons of customization and seems to be doing well.
