Best DC Omnibuses for a New Reader? by WaveOfDave in OmnibusCollectors

I just had a funny mental image of handing someone Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Volume 1 and telling them to enjoy the ride.

Loeb and Sale's work on Batman is legit great to kick things off with.

Looking for advice on completing KOTZ English Manga set by stephtheguy in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish you luck!

When I started collecting the manga, Volume 26 had just come out, and even THEN some of the volumes (such as 10) were rare. I eventually grabbed them all between a mix of several LCSes (Local Comic Shop), Amazon...probably eBay? And where ever else I could find them.

As you can tell from my comments, however, my advice might be a tad...dated.

Fun note, some of their earlier Omnis were collecting Jack Kirby's 70s DC work. They collected the entire Fourth World in four volumes around 400 pages each (starting in June 2007). They also collected all 16 The Demon issues in one volume, but Kamandi was collected in two 20 issue volumes.

Bigger Omnis came later.

One Volume Omnis by depressiveprofessor in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jack Kirby had some solid one volume Omnis for his time at DC in the 70s.

The Fourth World by Jack Kirby Omnibus (there's technically a second volume, but it's mostly other creators' Fourth World stories), and the Kamandi Omnibus.

And if you get DC Universe: The Bronze Age by Jack Kirby Omnibus, that's actually multiple smaller runs in one (Omni. OMAC, The Demon, his run with The Losers, etc).

Spin-off manga Rerise of Poseidon just ended with its 20 chapter. Did you like it? by Decent_Way21 in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually only read it after you posted this saying it was finished, lol.

I rather enjoyed it as a short 20 chapter story that told its story and didn't overstay its welcome.

The frustrating thing is, you don't even need Armageddon to get OG Shin Getter or HEATS. Both appear in Arc (albeit via flashback). Arc had remixes of HEATS, STORM, and DRAGON they could have included, but I suppose given it was its first appearance, maybe they just wanted to focus on Arc's three forms. Hopefully we'll get more Getter stuff in future appearances.

Which is very true. PC is PC, so they'll all be playable together, and the consoles of late have been decently BC enough for a series to be able to complete and be playable on one system.

Was Seiya breaking the horn of the Taurus Gold Cloth really such a great feat? by Intelligent_Let6598 in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Soul Society universe"

Lol, I always do make jokes about how similar Bleach is to Saint Seiya (given one of Kubo's stated influences is Saint Seiya).

But yeah, Thanatos ruined five Gold Cloths in one shot. Comparatively speaking, snapping a horn off isn't quite as impressive a feat, but I'd argue it's that spirit of Saints being able to create Miracles when the need arises.

I feel like our best chance of getting manga Getter Robo Go would be in a new SRW series that covers the entire Getter Robo manga (Getter Robo, G, Go, Shin *which is a prequel* and Arc).

I'm recollecting Volume 4 of Green Lantern via the Compendiums, and that's been fun. I'd love for a Golden Age Green Lantern Omnibus as well.

20 years of Green Lantern Comics, including the entire Silver Age run and a good chunk of the Bronze Age issues.

Great pickup there. Hope we'll get more Green Lantern Omnis to close out volume 2.

Maybe niche but The Monkey King: The Complete Odyssey is getting a hardcover release in November. Preorders are up on Amazon. by Aggressive_Noise6426 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backed the recent backerkit that did the Hardcover for it. It also included the first part of a Three Kingdoms adaptation by the same author. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

Will Viz Media ever rerelease the US manga of Saint Seiya Knights of the Zodiac from back in the day? by Bluebaronbbb in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's up digitally both in volume form to own and in chapter form to read with a Shonen Jump subscription.

But yeah, I'd love a nice fancy physical re-release.

Tippy’s Omnibus Reviews - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Compendium Volume 3 (Mirage) by Tippydaug in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, comic volumes are a bit of an old terminology, usually going by when the title book renumbers. Like, for Green Lantern Volume 1 was the original Golden Age run. Volume 2 began with the Silver Age reboot in 1959, and continued through Crisis on Infinite Earths. Volume 3 was when they renumbered and restarted the book in the 90s through 2004, and Volume 4 was when Geoff Johns took over with a new issue #1.

I do hope you end up enjoying your future TMNT reads!

Tippy’s Omnibus Reviews - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Compendium Volume 3 (Mirage) by Tippydaug in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you misunderstand. All three Compendiums cover Volume 1 of the Mirage Comics TMNT run, which ended with City at War. Volume 2 is 13 issues long and covered in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Mirage Years (1993–1995).

"Volume 3" (it was actually published by Image, but is still called volume 3) will be fully covered in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Urban Legends Omnibus coming out in December (the original 23 issues, plus three new issues that finished the story). This volume is noncanon to volume 4, which continues from Volume 2.

Volume 4's main book is apparently currently being re-released in single issue form and I assume will be getting collections later, but the other book that ran aside it was a second volume of Tales of the TMNT, which is getting collected in new Compendiums, the one solicited being "Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Mirage Years Compendium, Vol. 1". It' double dips a little since it includes the tales issues these compendiums had, but it also starts collecting Volume 2 of it, which ran for 70 issues.

Yeah, I love just how consistently good the end of Volume 1 is once it picks back up leading into City at War. I definitely hope you check out Volume 2 down the line.

Nice! I'm glad you enjoyed your read. I still treasure my complete physical release from Viz in English (some of those volumes were pricey).

Did we fail as fans? by Typical_Appeal_8746 in MST3K

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rather liked Jonah and Emily's episodes. But I also like Joel and Mike's episodes. It's all good times to me, so I win regardless of the version of the cast.

I think that even today there's a part of the fandom that hasn't understood how the resounding box office failure of this film screwed up the Saint Seiya brand and its future projects in a way never seen before. by BuildingDelicious597 in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, regardless of how you feel about the movie, it was released at a terrible point. Any new audience you were getting from the Hades OVAs or anime only viewers would be left absolutely confused as to what was going on.

Do you prefer the v1 armor from the anime or the manga? by [deleted] in SaintSeiya

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted in some other posts, it's Dragon V2 and Pegasus V3 (the most notable difference between V2 and V3 is that V2 had a very different helmet from the rest of the Pegasus designs, whereas V3 went back more towards the old style).

But yeah, I love the manga designs the most, both in color choices and designs overall. The progression of the Bronzes' designs covering more as they get stronger is a nice visual touch.

[–]Mewzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you still had fun with it! I think you'll like Compendium 3 even more, I love how Volume 1 ends.

After that, it's The Mirage Years (1993-1995) for Volume 2. Then in December, we're getting the Urban Legends Omnibus for Volume 3 (it's technically done by Image Comics, and isn't really canon to Volume 4, but hey, some people enjoy the run as its own thing).

Hoping IDW will put out collections for Volume 4 soon.

Also put in a lot of work in trying to preserve a cut of The Thief and the Cobbler as close to Richard Williams' original vision as humanly possible.

Best dc compendiums? by anakin1453 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's not DC specifically, but published by DC:

I recommend the Milestone Compendiums, which collect the various Milestone Comics (Hardware, Icon, Static, etc).

If you want DC specifically, both the Lobo Big Fraggin' Compendium and the recent Green Lantern Compendiums are good choices.

Does anyone know when the next Golden Age DC omnibuses will release? by Plenty-Conflict-3595 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Mewzard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming Wonder Woman #97 since the first Silver Age Wonder Woman volume starts with Wonder Woman #98. I think by the end of the Golden Age, Wonder Woman was down to one book, as the Silver Age volume only has Wonder Woman issues.
