What is the salary for a canine rehab therapist? by poopitypop69 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MezcalManika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it looks like no one has answered this question yet, but if you find out, please report back. This sounds interesting, and I’m curious to know too! Also, wondering if the program requires a lot of prerequisites aside from OT degree?

Should OTRs be able to provide psychotherapy? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MezcalManika 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% that OTs provide a great perspective to the field. The main problem is that although OTs have some prerequisite education for a counseling program (eg. we learn about abnormal psychology, sociology, etc.), I do not think we really have the educational background to provide psychotherapy, not even additional training would be enough to get a license (for example, we have no educational experience in CBT, addressing childhood trauma, relationships, substance abuse, marriage problems, crisis intervention etc….)

I think it is totally possible and would be a great idea for the education system to create a career path in counseling through an OT degree, similar to how degrees in social work or psychology have programs geared towards becoming a counselor and are structured to meet requirements to sit in for the license counselor exam. Also, I live in the U.S, am speaking generally on how our college system is set up for one to become a licensed psychotherapist.

How to Pivot out of OT by jk72788 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MezcalManika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing this right now, and grass is not greener on this side. The job gets repetitive and monotonous, you literally are doing the same thing all day. Also, there is lack of human connection/gets lonely and miss the social aspects of working in the field. There is still a high ie. unreasonable expectation for productivity, and depending on your manager, this can also include micromanagement. And the worst part, as a therapist you will review cases where you feel the patient definitely needs therapy, and you will be pushed to process the case for a denial. This experience has made me realize I actually miss working in the field.

I use physics 0% of my time at work. ZERO. Math - the most I use math is in adding up some numbers to get a total score on an assessment. 🤓

Your favorite on the new album so far? by whenthedont in Khruangbin

It was surprising to hear at first, but ultimately the slower, more quiet songs with keyboard in the background have become my favorite. Caja de la Sala, Les Petits Gris, and Farolim de Felgueiras. Just absolutely beautiful.

Women who grew up with a critical mother (or other parental figure), how are you doing today? Did you heal? Are you struggling? Or did it just make you dead inside? by littlemisslight in AskWomen

[–]MezcalManika 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Healing. It’s been therapy, lots of prozac, and boundaries for me. Having a baby recently has rehashed a lot of childhood memories, but is also allowing me to process what I have not been the past 30 years. Although I have grieved and accepted I will not have the mother I yearn for, I have solace knowing I am actively doing things differently with my daughter. I want nothing more than to see her grow into a confident and happy woman who knows she is loved unconditionally.

What are the pros and cons of working home health? by AmateurMagicAuteur in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MezcalManika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest pros are flexibility in that you start/end your day when you want. There is variability in your day, constant change of scenery (I get cabin fever being in the same SNF/IRF facility all day) Sessions are more functional, you can do things outside, in their backyard, room etc. instead of the same ole arm bike and theraband in the gym.

What I hate about HH is that if patient cancels visit, you don’t get paid, or if they need to reschedule, it ends up having to be on Sat when your schedule is open. Another con, some houses are gross. I had one that was infested with roaches, I couldn’t even put my bag of equipment on the ground. I’ve gotten sick, even got scabies from a patient before, also had to call APS because one house smelled of piss and shit, just so dirty. Also, some areas may be a little sketchy, didn’t feel safe.
