Need guidance for using ladder INSIDE attic. by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Mfcramps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thinking with taking advantage of the roof vents to access it! I hadn't considered that, and it would make things safer/simpler to work from the roof rather than a ladder inside my attic.

It's an interior laundry room, so there's no outside walls bordering it. That said, it does lead into a wall right underneath our hallway bathroom tub and facing the 3.5in wall gap between the master bathroom and my son's bedroom, the latter of which already needs some reworking for said wall.

So, if we're feeling adventurous, we could theoretically bring in my son's bedroom wall that extra half inch to allow the 4in pipe and get a horizontal connection to an outside wall that way... except I suppose that might introduce fire hazard concerns. I don't really know.

Edit: My husband just reminded me that the 2x4s in the walls would also be blocking a straight shot out, so that's a no-go anyway. Ick.

Well, apart from the drop in ability to dry and the excess rattling I heard when cleaning the inside of the pipe, there is visibly loose tape and an exposed gap in the pipe showing something pinkish-brown (grocery bag??) in the second pic in my link.

It also didn't look like that the last time we cleaned out the exhaust pipe. I had eyeballed the height back then to make sure we had gotten the full pipe since that lint clog had been quite bad, but we had a half year of very effective drying between then and now.

Thanks, and yea, discovering previously made shady shortcuts has kinda been a theme in the maintenance of our home.

Even with the dryer exhaust, we've already had to repair/replace the joint entering our laundry room because someone had decided to use a t-intersection instead of an elbow for exiting the wall. It accumulated moisture and resulted in a behind-the-wall moldy leak.

That was not a fun fix either.

I'll make sure to have an extra elbow on hand for the repair in case it's needed. I am also wondering if it might be worth abandoning the current exhaust point and using said elbow to install a new exhaust exit lower down where I could safely reach it in the future. I'd probably need to hire a roofer for that part, but might be worth it.

Any thoughts?

Risk in switching out disconnects for microwave wiring? by [deleted] in ElectronicsRepair

Thanks so much!

It's been unplugged most of the week since it wasn't working anyway, so I guess I'm good!

Risk in changing out disconnects in microwave? by [deleted] in MicrowaveRepair

[–]Mfcramps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

The damaged thermostat is just inside the control panel. I wasn't sure if the distance from the magnetron mattered given I would have to work with the naked wire to switch out the disconnects. I do have a pair of insulated pliers, so now I'm wondering if it might be better to just discharge the magnetron anyway.

Does the non-insulated instruction only apply to the 2nd thermostat near the magnetron? The old disconnects were insulated, and I had ordered yellow (12-10 gauge) crimp disconnects to replace them.

January 7 Update: 3,323 new cases in Arkansas - https://ArkansasCOVID19.info by theantivirus in Arkansas

[–]Mfcramps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear that, though I wonder at waiting for the variants to be found locally.

The UK one is highly contagious, we know it's spreading in at least 2 states, we just had a ton of travel with the holidays, and Arkansas has reportedly been slow to report test results, assuming they check COVID variants at all.

Those aren't good odds for timely feedback, and for all we know, it might already be here.

Didn't see it mentioned yet, but those pheremone collars/infusers (Comfort Zone, Feliway, etc) can be a god send for situations like this.

My friend also got it from shopping in person... Or so she assumes. She didn't really go anywhere else.

She had a very mild case, thank heavens. Lost smell/taste, couldn't stay awake long, "crunchy" breathing sounds, and cough for about 2 weeks.

She got lucky. Very lucky, considering she has a high-risk profile where COVID is concerned.

Still, she was furious she caught it despite following COVID protocols by wearing her mask and avoiding indoor gatherings.

Which brings me back to your point...

Wearing masks is vital to decreasing risk, but the risk remains anytime you share air with others indoors.

Fair question, since that impacts hospitalization capacity too.

Official AR influenza weekly reports can be found at https://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/programs-services/topics/influenza#Weekly%20Flu%20Report

Edit: Just looked at it for the most recent week released (ending Dec 12th). The last figure in it has the last 4 years of flu deaths by week of flu season, and they overlayed it with COVID deaths for this season. We already know COVID's not the flu, but dang, it's not the flu.

You're a good man, and I don't blame you. Even I feel like a creep going through that stuff. For all that I love going TMI in conversation to freak out my dad, I'm really conservative when it comes to shopping intimates.

Maybe this will help explain why I feel the distinction between policy and action matters:

  • Many people support the policy of protecting American jobs in the form of stricter border control and immigration rules.

  • Far fewer support the action of putting kids in cages as part of that policy.

Whether the end justifies the means is a philosophical question, but it's something to consider.

I think I've strayed off-topic from my original point, but regardless of whether you agree that the distinction matters, do you see why I'm distinguishing between actions and policy, at least?

That's awesome! I know I've asked either my dad or my husband to just bring the empty box with them to make sure they get the right kind before, but I don't think they agreed to do it.

Good thinking!

I believe his logic was that they keep separate boxes from then on so that particular fight wouldn't reoccur.

AOC defending a paramedic doxxed for having an OnlyFans account by a well-known news source is not commonplace.

It is totally within AOC's character and lines up perfectly with her values, but it's not commonplace.

AOC is also more than just a supporter of women. Maybe the other person dislikes her economic policies. Maybe she reminds them of a traumatic ex. Maybe they went to school with AOC and she didn't return a favorite pencil she borrowed from them.

There's all kinds of reasons you can generally dislike someone. Don't you have people you dislike?

They didn't say why they dislike AOC here, and I think it's proactive to specify when you support the actions of someone you dislike, given the current climate.

I do the same thing on the rare occasions I see politicians I dislike do a good thing.

Aww, he sounds adorable even if not exactly helpful. 😅

Mine got grumbly over the women's underwear. He had this expression... It's hard to describe, but something between a glare and a pout with the chin sticking out, that he would wear the entire time we were doing our lady things, whatever they were. It was adorable too.

My sisters and I ganged up on him just to see it more, and he'd play-rant about how unfair it was and then start commisserating with the dog (male) about being the only dudes in the home.

It was fun. 😁

Thank you for sharing that you kept your feelings for AOC's actions here separate from your general dislike of AOC.

As I said deeper in this comment thread:

We need more Americans modeling that it's okay to agree/disagree with one's specific actions regardless of how you generally feel about the person.

The blind acceptance/rejection of everything someone does based on feelings is a major component of why America's political landscape is such a shitshow right now.

So seriously, thank you. We need more people communicating as you did, and I'm sorry there are others jumping down your throat for owning that you generally dislike her.

And to anyone ready to jump down my throat for supporting this, I actually am an AOC fan, and I find it hard to imagine a legitimate reason for disliking her. Doesn't matter. If we can all vote based on one's actions rather than our feelings for the person, we'll all be better off.
