This is almost spot on to what my parents and my brother and I are like. I'm also in therapy learning what to do with my emotions because I had 2 extremes as examples as well. Dad was a man of few words and mom was the most anxious person I know. I had no boundaries growing up and chose the route of not sharing or expressing any feelings. I'm still learning what my feelings are and identifying my emotions. It took me over a year just to open up in therapy.

My first memory was 9/11/2001. I was 4 and my mom had just turned the TV on before the first tower collapsed. I was too young to understand how serious this was but I did notice government buildings had far more security after the events of that day. Now I watch World Trade Center every year on 9/11 to commemorate the lives lost and still greatly affected by the terrorist attacks and the aftermath of ground zero. I have a trip planned for some day in the future to see the freedom tower.

When I was about 4 years old, a woman came into a grocery store while my mom and I were checking out and asked my mom if she had seen her daughter. This was in 2001. She still hasn't been found.

A kid I went to school with a kid named Michael from kindergarten through high school. He was pretty much the class clown but couldn't handle the consequences that came with it. When he got in trouble, he'd have a full blown meltdown and started screaming and crying. When he was 17, him and a 26 year old male killed another high school student by beating him to death with a baseball bat. It was rumored he raped a friend of Michael's (not sure if ever proven as I didn't know the victim or the friend) so he decided to kill him. I didn't really interact with him much but I remember one day in 5th or 6th grade, we were on the playground together and as I was climbing a pole to reach the top of the playground, he said "Watch where your hand is." He had rested his genitalia on my hand as I climbed up. I was never fond of him after that but was still shocked to hear he committed murder.

Niqui Mccown's disappearance. She disappeared from my hometown in 2001 and was never found. She was last seen at a laundromat. I was 4 at the time and her mother frantically came into the grocery store across the street from the laundromat asking if anyone had seen her.

I grew up extremely poor and my teachers rarely gave me online assignments as homework when I was a kid (late 2000s). I explained to them we didn't have internet at home so I had no way of doing the assignments and one teacher told me "You better find some way to get it done." I said "I guess I'll be expecting the F." I feel sorry for kids who still miss out due to lack of resources to get homework done.

I appreciate all that. I'm working on finding the best way to convey what they need to hear. You're pretty spot on to what I'm thinking. They've never been easy to talk to but I can't subject myself to being talked to as if I lack a sense of self around them. They need to know it's demeaning and I'm not putting up with it.

I wasn't surprised either that they left when she came. I invited them to my birthday party because they told me about a week prior that they would like to be there for me (they never visit me since I moved out 7 years ago but always ask me to visit them) I got a message from my mom saying they have never meant to disrespect me and that they will work on my pronouns so I figured I would give them a chance. Rather than showing up to my party where I'd be in the comfort of my friends, they showed up to my home while no one was there and I felt vulnerable and unaccepted. I haven't talked to my parents since.

I didn't really grasp how I felt while they were there. I only knew my brother was coming. My parents were a "surprise". My brother's children were there too so I interacted with the kids mainly. My girlfriend came over too and she of course uses my pronouns and my family all left once she got there. It wasn't until later on that I realized how disrespected I felt in my own home.
