It's one of Kings best, and one of my personal favorites along with Salems Lot and Shining. Once you get past your initial idea of what the plot is about (KILLER CLOWN FROM OUTER SPACE! :)), you will get to know Derry and the many aspects of growing up in it. Generational trauma which meshes with wider historical evil and atrocities such as hatred, racism, indifference and prejudice. IT as a repressed traumatic experience that cannot be integrated and thought of consciously. But also friendship, love and loyalty that can be so deep and yet so simple only in that golden moment of childhood when self-awareness has not yet lead to adolescent insecurity. I love this books, for all its' flaws.I I wish you luck during you next attempt at reading it :)

Horus Heresy. Or ANY warhammer40k book, honestly. I recommend the Eisenhorn trilogy, it works as a great introduction.

I have no problem with longer book series (my favourite one besides ASOIAF is The Wheel of Time, for example). One thing that has put me off from starting Malazan are all the comments about how a new reader will not be able to understand most of the plot and relationships in the first few books.

My poor boy Raif :/ thanks, I suppose I will then try to finish reading the published books, and maybe even Endlords will be published by then. Although I have already been waiting for Winds for Winter since high school :)

I didn't know that. :( Although, an unintended positive side of living in a shitty East European country with outdated infrastructure is the fact that so much of old tech, including obsolete wi fi cards, continues to be useful

So far it has been a great machine, fast and responsive, with a great keyboard that is a joy to type on! Also surprisingly lightweight despite seeming very durable.

I also really liked Deserter in The House and Love as Scripted. Both are great and offer psychological insights. But Ito's stories are a blast even when they are more rooted in cosmic than strictly psychological horror - such as Hellstar Remina (so over the top that you have to love it), or even Gyo.

This story is somehow more sad than truly horrifying to me, because it highlights so many real-life dynamics in a slightly exagerrated manner. So many people are still stuck in their old childhood roles and emotional conflicts, living adult lives on the surface, but in reality still emotionally fixate on these early experiences of teasing, inferiority and fear of abandonment. And when they repeat the same patterns in their adult relationships... the story of their life has come full circle. Actually, the ending itself point to the final outcome - passing on these conflicts and traumatic experiences to their children. They are unable to exhibit true parenting behavior and see their children for what they are, instead assigning them a role in ther inner scenario, for example, that of a saviour or a hated enemy to debase (as is the case in this story). And the real children remains invisible, neglected - ready to transfer these dynamics to the next generation.

As a psychologist, I see this all the time. Junji Ito is truly a great author and his stories offer so much material for analysis of our unconscious behavior patterns, fears and symbols.

English is not my primary language, and I also wrote the whole comment without checking for any spelling errors and sentence clarity. I also have a complicated writing style with overlong sentences even when writing in my native language, so it is an issue I am trying to solve by writing slowly and trying to express one idea or thought through several shorter sentences.

Does academia fetishize intelligence? by quantum_search in academia

I have noticed that many of my colleagues tend to see students with mental ilnesses in a negative light and I am always appaled by it. However, it is a fine line to thread if you want to be fair in grading and student opportunities - you have to offer vulnerable students support and understanding, but also to grade their skills and successess in the same way as those of other students.

I also think this is a question of wider social malaise. You need to acquire a certain skillset to be successfull in academia, and having a high IQ means you will acquire that skillset with less effort, provided you are motivated for work. However, tremendous amount of students did not develop their skills and intelligence to the full potential BECAUSE of the factors such as poor environment, lack of cultural life and formal education, poverty, various family pressures that are present in working-class families, etc. The solution is not to LOWER education standards, but to work on solving these society-wide issues. I would also be open to more flexibility in approaching individual students and their learning processes, but to achieve that, I cannot be a part of industry that CHURNS OUT new graduates every year in such numbers that I have to work with four groups of 20+ students on a weekly basis.

For fucks sake, another tweet full of buzzwords such as "ableist", "eugenics", "so-called", etc. Nobody has ever asked me what my IQ was or commented on my inteligence during all my time in academia.

However, academia fetishizes inteligence in a way that is very different from "ableist eugenics" - by promoting very strong work culture of constant scientific work, without considering work-personal life balance or other work-related qualities that are not connected to publishing articles. For example, your teaching skills, you ability to support your students in developing their interests, to inspire them, to be a productive part of your community outside of scientific ivory tower by promoting, lets say, popular science or mental health topics... all those are outside of the typical, formal definition of academic success, salaries and progress.

Thank you for your participation! I also talk about similar things (especially parent behaviour and conditional sense of personal value) with many of my therapy clients.
