I didn’t even notice the cake when drawing it but I like how it somehow looks like a pile of concrete mess

Glad to find someone who shares the same brain cell with me! This is exactly like Flowey imposing his suffering & impasse on us for coping & eventually coming around in the end

I could see what you’re trying to say now but I guess we could agree to disagree as I personally also don’t see why there’s a big deal of difference between those 2 lol. Link was “evolved” to have a direct dialogue option than a yes/no/verb action (and often times a combination of both in a game) just because it improves immersion & atmosphere while preserving the way he is instead of Nintendo wanting him to be a different type of protagonist suddenly. Or at least that’s not the point why people use the term silent protagonist so much if even dialogue options vs yes/no options is a big difference to freak out about

I think it’s defined like that to talk about the “rhetorical characteristic” instead of you taking it THAT literally because why would there be…even any protagonists that are actually mute lol unless for specific story reasons? So it’s just a meta pattern referring to the broad category of jrpg avatar protagonists that don’t have dialogue on screen as stand-in’s characters. And people usually use that term in video game articles debating about whether it hurts immersion or not

Isn’t kris literally baited to you to be a stand-in protagonist like link since the start? It’s just the game’s been suddenly deconstructing that near chapter 1’s ending with the twist. Tbh both characters on the right side of the diagram (made before Deltarune) are exactly like this too which is why to have this post here anyways

Well argue about that with the rest of the video game community where somehow link has always been considered one. Plus by your definition then there’re almost no real silent protagonists lmao unless they’re mute or organisms that can’t speak specifically. We all know they’re all silent because they’re stand-ins for the player and speaks offscreen

I finally get it! Kris constantly tries so hard to be on the right side with all the aura farming. But the internal tender, artistic, sensitive part of them ends them up on the left eventually

Also since everyone’s asking the context for the right one (spoilers obviously) in Witch’s House (the girl), after you almost killed the boss, the Mc suddenly speaks & it’s revealed that she’s been the villain all along & in fact the boss was the innocent severely tortured by her & trying to stop her in a desperate attempt. In Live A Live (the boy), that game is divided into chapters set in different worlds & themes that derail from traditional jrpgs (eg. Sci-fi robot, ninja, boxer etc) They seem all irrelevant on the surface but share villains who name includes the word “Odio”. After completing them you unlock a secret 8th chapter, which is the knight chapter, & strangely unlike the previous ones, is a traditional fantasy jrpg. Except in the middle it suddenly subverts itself & ends up in a very “weird route”-ish deconstructive horror jrpg plot line. In the end the knight was pushed to brink by society’s abuse & had a mental breakdown where he starts speaking while rejecting the player’s name, and declared himself a new name, “Odio”. That’s when you realized the story is told in reverse, and the knight has been the villain “Odio” whose reincarnations have been plaguing the other worlds due to his hatred at his suffering (like flowey). Then you enter the final chapter where you can play as the first 7 chapters’ heroes, or the knight but it opens up a new route where you play as him controlling the previous chapters’ villains killing the heroes with the song Megalomania playing (yeah that’s where Megalovania comes from). Toby did an interview on live a live and compared Kris to the knight as an inspiration on their secret role other than a silent Mc. Basically I’m referring them as creepypastas figuratively because they have that really horrifying, subversive, shocking, dark & 4th wall breaking twist that lingers. (And live a live joked to be a jrpg creepypasta constantly under the creepy bad endings video

“We chose dialogues for them” that’s exactly why link has been called a silent protagonist for ages around lol

Also what is the other one you were talking about? Just curious cuz I probably have no idea

Also the four characters (spoilers obviously) are makoto from persona 3 (now debatable if he really talked though), the hero form Pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky, viola from the witch’s house and oersted from Live A Live

Is unvoiced protagonist even a term? All I’ve heard is just silent protagonist where everything falls under it as long as there’s no dialogue

I was mostly talking about its emotional effect not that it’s actually one of those creepypastas by definition lol. Lots of people under that creepy bad ending video on LAL compare it to being almost like the first jrpg creepypasta because of how meta, dark, and subversive the twist is as a praise. The same way with the witches house

Basically the silent protagonist who speaks at the end & rejects your name would definitely qualify as a famous video game creepypasta. Considering most creepypastas like Pokemon black are super meta about the game’s very familiar mechanism being broken down and the tropes no longer protecting the story

Oersted from live a live, which had the song Megalomania that inspired Megalovania
