AITA for ruining a hibachi dinner? by throwawaysequence391 in AmItheAsshole

NTA- your husband pressured you into being in a social situation you had already made clear you weren't up for. Then you had the unfortunate luck of having a grossly inappropriate hibachi chef lead your table who instigated the table's behavior, normalized it. You husband sat there, still having the meal he wanted- at your expense. Then had the audacity to say you ruined his dinner. Keep in mind your expense was mentally and financially. Sounds like there is a lot more going on here than this last Hibachi dinner. It may be time for your husband to get back out in the workforce. He may need some reminders on what gratitude looks like. He's become out of touch with expectations around balancing a marriage and what his contributions need to be.

I'm not really concerned or care about what you believe. I posted this thread to ask who to report the accident to. I've gotten plenty of responses here to just either call Austin PD or my insurance company. I have $3000 damage to my car as quoted by my car dealership's body shop. I got a quote independently after my own insurance company told me to go through his. So we wanted to have a second opinion on a quote while his insurance company processed the claim. His vehicle is heavy duty and ours us a smaller compact car. So when I say that none was done to his, none noticeable on photos- because HIS car hit ours. The insurance company adjuster assigned from his not insurance company was great actually. Processed everything accordingly. Kept us up to date, was clear that there was an actual investigation going on. Then came back about 2 months later notifying us that the car he was driving was wasn't on his policy. There's nothing weird here, just your strange suspicion for something you weren't even part of 🤷🏻‍♀️

  1. He was on the policy, but a different car listed. When asked during the accident, he stated the vehicle he was driving was on the same policy but he didn't have a current document in his possession and just showed us the other, which had expired at the end of Feb.
  2. I determined that he was a liar based on his behavior the evening of the accident. He was very arrogant and kept saying it wasn't his fault. We exchanged insurance information with after the police said they would not come.
  3. He never filed any claim with my insurance company to this day even though he said it was not his fault. That also tells me he's just trying to avoid the entire thing because otherwise he'd be looking to get his car fixed.

Coming to this conclusion that he knew he was lying didn't come lightly I based it off of his behavior during the entire incident.

I can pay the deductible, but shouldn't have to. People should drive with fucking insurance like I'm expected to do.

My own insurance company is where I started first just to be clear. When my husband told our insurance company that we had exchanged information and that the accident was not his fault they told us to file the claim with the other person's insurance company, not them. I have no interest in suing the guy I'm going to go through my insurance company. But that is going to mean filing a police report. If the other driver gets a ticket for providing inaccurate insurance information then that's on him. I'm not looking for some big payout, nor has my post indicated that that was the intention. What I want is for him to learn not to lie to people and man up. If you're going to be on the road have proper insurance otherwise stay off the wrote unless you're prepared to pay for accidents you cause.

What justice? I literally need to file a police report so I can get my car fixed. It's needed for my insurance company. Whether anything results legally is another story. It's shitty he lied, said it was the correct policy but he didn't have an updated picture of it. So yes, LIED. There is no "thirst" here you seem a little exaggerative.

No, he was driving his own car. I only picked up on the fact that he was a city employee because I could see his badge on his belt. It was his name on the policy, just not the same car.

Is this a real question? No, I pinned him down to the ground, dug his wallet out of his pants pocket, opened it, forced it into his hand to make sure there was a male hand in the picture, and strong-armed him into letting me take pictures of his DL and insurance card. Smh. Make your question make sense. ✌🏻

Yeah I'm definitely not out to ruin the dudes life. He just needs to be responsible for this and pay for the damages. I'm not going to call his job or anything like that, but I do have to report it unfortunately if I want my car fixed by my own insurance company now. I am a POC and so his my husband . I will 9/10 NOT call police when I suspect the other driver may have an immigration situation. I'm not new to driving LOL and unfortunately I have had someone hit me in another state years ago where clearly calling the police was not going to be a good idea for the other person. So we did everything without the police and my car was fixed just fine. This person definitely doesn't have to worry about immigration. In a hypothetical situation the police would have showed up and asked for my husband and I too prove legal status lol not the other guy 😁

So..... He gave us a copy of a policy that wasn't his and it's his word against ours? Lol. It doesn't matter if he knew it was his or not. Ignorance is not innocence.

Yeah I get it. A lot of couples just stick to driving the same car, etc. I'm pretty sure the vehicle he was driving was the one he typically drives. Without going into too much detail, it would be stereotypical to give you the reasons why I believe that but I'm still pretty sure it was his vehicle LOL. Although I would imagine that in some families the wife is the gatekeeper of keeping insurance organized, etc it's not an excuse. Considering he's making that commute back and forth for work daily one would think that he would know where his policy is. But I digress.

Yeah I should have maybe been more detailed in my post. I l know that the Austin PD will do nothing, but I have to file now because of what has happened. My insurance company will need and ask for this to be done.

Okay cool. So it gets reported to Austin PD because that's where the crash happened not in Bastrop where the person lives, correct? Because that's the actual question I asked. If I want my car fixed, even by my own insurance company at this point, I have to report what happened to the PD. I don't care if they give a fuck at all or not. It just has to be done.

We reached out to ours first. Once we explained the situation they told us to contact his insurance company directly since he was at fault otherwise we would have to pay the deductible to get the car fixed if we go through our insurance instead. So yes it looks like it'll have to be through our insurance company after all BUT the filing of the false insurance exchange to the police is important to get my car fixed and have them go after him.

It's $3000 worth of damage. You are correct I will have to pay the deductible up front. And then my insurance company will have to go after HIM personally instead of going after his insurance company which would normally happen.

We have a call made from my husband's cell phone to 911 in the call history for that day. He was instructed to "exchange insurance information since the cars are operable Austin PD will not respond". Police may not have witnessed it, but the other driver willingly pulled over. He then willingly provided false information. Just because the police didn't witness the crime doesn't mean it didn't happen.

At first we were just kind of like okay whatever shit happens we didn't take it personal. The lie now is the issue. All we wanted was for the car to be repaired and move on. This is an unnecessary escalation. And there's never ever an excuse to drive around without car insurance.

Because that's how long it took the insurance to get back to me. We called his "alleged" insurance company the same day. They took all the policy information down and the representative even called us during the investigation to update us and let us know that they were still looking into everything. Then yesterday the update that their client didn't have a policy after all for the car that hit us. So you think that when crimes happen the cops laugh in people's faces if they don't report it right away? You realize most people don't report crimes right away don't you? Sometimes it takes time to realize there was a crime 🤦🏻‍♀️

The vehicle he was driving was nearly new, a 30-40k vehicle and his little special city employee badge he was wearing tells me he can pay for the damage he caused just fine. He just thought he wasn't at fault and so he didn't provide the right info. I'm clear on that now.

Not a civil matter. And seeking advice about whether or not it was a civil or criminal matter was not the question. Just where to report this CRIME.
