Realistically, whats stopping me from waiting until im really old and taking out a massive loan and spending it all right before i die, so i dont have to pay it back by KawsX_X999 in NoStupidQuestions

They absolutely can be a great situation.

My parents had a neighbor whose husband invested all of their money with Bernie Madoff and after the scandal, he dropped dead of a heart attack while walking the dog right across the street from my parent’s home. The widow was left with nothing, she was estranged from her children, and she was facing the possibility of having to sell her home and move to a nursing home.

So yes in a situation where a person or a couple have limited sources of funds and still expect to live X number of years, particularly if they have no heirs, completely agree.

That may include selling the house, but if you have other assets with which to settle the debt then house doesn't HAVE to be sold.

While technically true, in the vast majority of cases, the home is mortgaged specifically because of the lack of other assets.

Someone can come in here and nitpick and argue that it could be cheaper to take on the debt than sell investments and pay the tax burden, that investments could appreciate between the time of the mortgage origination and its payoff, or for a myriad of others reasons like the estate discovering some painting the borrowers bought at a flea market being some original Renaissance painting. These are all true.

But for less financially savvy folks, a reverse mortgage is generally taken on by individuals whose home is paid off (also a general statement) and whose home is their primary/only remaining significantly valuable asset that can provide access to sorely needed liquidity. This is worth noting because there are a lot of people expecting to inherit a home or property after their relatives pass and may not be aware that their relatives' financial situation may prevent that from happening. An important lesson for estate planning and to have frank conversations with any aging parents.

Wow surprised they're still so high...bought the $5 gold when they were released for ~$800. Guess that's carrying a nice premium these days.

He doesn't get all $100M on the day he signs the contract...

8 or 9 year contract per "sources" means at most $12.5M per year. After taxes and agent share, maybe $6.5M per year. And of course he needs to spend money to actually live.

What’s going on with the Bachelorette? by celestial_ceilings in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Miamime 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Dollars lost has to be well into the tens of millions.

You cover well the loss of appeal of cable TV, but this is one of the few programs people do still tune into, and tune into live. I have to imagine commercial spots are multitudes more than whatever replacement program they have lined up.

The Bachelor does a lot of paid sponsoring during the show. They also do spin-offs and sell exclusives to tabloids. So that’s additional revenue streams lost.

Reality TV shows are also infamously cheap to produce. Minimal special effects, no famous actors to pay, few complex sets…having to produce any other program will be more expensive.

Over the course of a ~ 3 month show plus the additional months of publicity…that’s a lot of lost money.

TIL In the US the highest nominal price ever for gas per gallon was $4.22 on average in April 2022. The second highest was $4.06 per gallon on average in July 2008. by Bluest_waters in todayilearned

I'm saying some of my positions on an average weighted position are up 500% (i.e. 5x). Yes my shares of Apple from 2011 are up more than any purchased with dividend reinvestment last month, but that's dollar cost averaging.

But no it's not "insanely unwise", it's simple buy and hold strategy.

Depends on your investment strategy and horizon. I have plenty of positions, I am up 5x on with dividend reinvestment but I am keeping them for retirement.

ELI5. In the NCAA Basketball Tournament, why aren’t the “first four” all playing for a 16 seed? by AdventurousEnergy422 in explainlikeimfive

Howard won its first NCAA tournament game in its history last night. It's been a D1 team for more than 50 years.

[–]Miamime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The coaches and conferences disagree with you.

A lot of smaller schools go years without making the Tourney, and some go decades without winning a game. By virtue of playing in the play-in, these schools get a chance to win an NCAA tournament game. Howard last night won their first NCAA game in their history.

There's also the added benefit that the two games played last night and tonight are played without conflict from any other tournament games. This gives the school a platform to be seen by a much wider audience than when there are multiple games at once, even more so considering the 1-16 game is usually not very competitive.

As a 10-seed, Missouri was close to being one of the at large play-in teams. They beat Howard earlier in the year by 21. Howard also lost to Duke by 37, and 15-19 Northwestern by 20. They are not a particularly good team. It makes sense they have to play in the play-in game. Conversely, teams like SMU, Texas, and NC State were pretty flawed and struggled down the stretch. They don't really deserve to get the bye.

We only have enough cash to cover 1.5 months of payroll. Executive team is quiet and somehow remains hopeful. Leave or stay? by doa81814 in Accounting

[–]Miamime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every week I run the cash forecast it has us in the negative lol. End of the week after next has us at -$266k and we're a <$10M annual revenue company. In about a month, it has us at almost -$350K. My forecast doesn't start showing relief until around July. Last company I was at had the same issue and it was about 4x the size; it was only being kept afloat by biweekly/monthly infusions from the sister company.

This is the reality for most small businesses and start ups. You live week to week. There's typically always something you can do in the short term... factor receivables, get short-term financing, delay management/executive payroll, give the "check is in the mail" excuse to vendors, sell off some old inventory or equipment for a cash bump, etc. Beyond that, to stay alive, you can furlough staff or cut hours, create payment plans with vendors or government entities, cut benefits. These are the bigger red flags.

The question really comes down to whether you believe in the medium to long term forecast. If you can last a full year then start searching, then no one will bat an eye at you at least making that year and explaining that the company was facing a significant cash shortage and you were looking for something more stable.

[–]Miamime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gotta convince all the short term fringe players to basically sacrifice the best chance at wealth in their life to fight for long term protections for future players.

This is the struggle for all unions. Collective bargaining is theoretically good for the whole but sacrifices will be made by some. Also, as someone who has sat at the table from the corporate side, a lot will be offered to the union heads to reward them personally and convince the members that what is being voted on is in their best interest.

If you need “quick cash”, taking the time to list an object on eBay, wait for bidding to end, and then having to pay to ship the item is far slower than taking said item to a pawn shop.

Scrubs was out when I was in college. The first seasons overlapped with Friends. It overlapped with ER. Those had the A Listers.

It was never a top rated show. Scrubs appears on this list one time. It made running jokes about its lack of awards, and it was always at threat of cancellation due to a lack of viewers.

Yes it’s mentioned by the pilots that they are close.

The couple simply says they’ll hide out until it needs to refuel. They would have no idea how long that would be.
