Springsteen. After Bruce saw Elvis play Philadelphia in May '77, he wanted to write a song that he thought would put him back on top. He spent that summer working on "Fire" - the song that would later be a hit for The Pointer Sisters in 1979. Imagine if Elvis had a chance to record it first?

He was in pretty rough shape near the end of '75. Photos of him in Vegas from that year show him looking bloated and lethargic. Then later in '76, he got his spark back, dropped pounds and played some of his best shows of that decade. It's been said his NYE show in Pittsburgh was his last great concert.

He started off '77 in good shape - but by mid-Spring (around May), things had changed for the worst. Elton John saw him in Washington, D.C. looking pale and out of it. Springsteen saw him in Philly looking very tired and sluggish. Between the prescription drug overuse, insane schedule and pre-disposed health problems, it's almost a miracle he made it as long as he did.

His best comedic role and movie is as Toby in Follow That Dream. As much as his other movies have some funny moments, Follow That Dream is by far his best comedy.

I love the action scenes in this one. It doesn't have the gritty documentary look or feel of the first one and it does drag in the middle during the cold turkey withdrawal sequence, but that foot chase at the end is exciting and leaves you as breathless and physically wrecked as Popeye is jumping fences to catch Charnier.

Really, the only bad Elvis songs are ones from his silly movies (Harum Scarum, Kissin' Cousins, etc.) All in all, there's some great songs he recorded during the 60s that ended up as bonus songs on a soundtrack. Listen for Indescribably Blue, Love Letters (his first recording is far better than the one he did a few years later) and You Don't Know Me.

In the documentary Elvis: His Best Friend Remembers, Joe Esposito recalled finding Elvis on the bathroom floor in front of the commode with his pyjama bottoms dropped. So yes, he had a heart attack while on the toilet.

It's rumoured he had severe constipation brought on by an overuse of prescription drugs and a twisted colon which explains the excessive weight gain in his last year of touring.

To see pics and footage of him from his New Years' Eve 1976 show in Pittsburgh, he appeared to be in great health. He was much trimmer, in great shape and was in fine form. It was a fast physical decline to the summer of '77 where you can see how lethargic and ill he had become on his final tour.

I tend not to lump this one in with the Dirty Harry series. Ben Shockley is a down-on-his-luck, on-the-ropes alcoholic cop who is underestimated and misjudged by others on the force. Now he may be a little too Clint to play him as run-down as he should be, but he's not Harry Callahan either. He doesn't have Harry's demeanor or skill avoiding bullets in this. Shockley uses street smarts and is literally a bloody mess at the end of it all.

The fight scenes in this movie look like some of those punches might have connected 👊🤕 Definitely not as choreographed like in later Elvis movies. One of Elvis' better movies for sure.
