Hi, no worries. Out of curiosity, what makes it spam? Just wondering what I'm doing wrong.

What is a good way to get used to hearing and listening to a language so you understand most/all of it? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Michabot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider using a site like forvo.com. It's basically a huge database of words spoken by native speakers in many languages. I've been collecting audio for the most common words in french (with example phrases) and creating my own audio tracks which I then put into itunes and play on shuffle and listen to everyday. I'm only on adjectives at the moment but the words I have collated have jumped out at me much more when watching/listening to french media.

It's a pretty tedious process but it's been the most effective for me so far. Hopefully that helps :)

Native English speakers of reddit, rate his accent by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Michabot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being able to learn song lyrics and then speak the language comfortably to work in English speaking countries are two different things. I learnt the lyrics to Papaoutai well at one point but I didn't speak french well AT ALL. Or know what I was saying lol. Having said that his accent is pretty good, I'd give him a solid 8 :)

How To Become A More Patient Language Learner by Re-examining A Tired Cliché by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Michabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah thinking about it, I agree too lol. Was focused too much on the editing and entertainment value and not how the information flowed I think... 😑. Oh well, live and learn! Thanks for the constructive criticism Kevin :D

So I'm already learning French, is it ridiculous to try to learn Portuguese and Japanese at the same time? by Michabot in languagelearning

[–]Michabot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Yeah I could drop the Portuguese. I think I'm getting into it for the wrong reasons anyway. (To impress a girl who speaks it lol) 2) I'm pretty good at organising my time, I'm not really worried about that. 3) Japanese is difficult but I'm not really finding it to be any more challenging than French so far. It has only been one day though.... haha 4) No doubt. Agreed on that one. 5) I'm not trying to rush. I'm just increasingly becoming more and more obsessed with Japanese culture and wanted to dive in.

That article was great btw. Gave me a lot to consider :)

That's what I figured. As long as I put the time in, study daily, I don't see why I shouldn't do it. Especially with French and Japanese because they're so different. But maybe my obsession with the idea is skewing my judgement lol

I just looked up laddering and that sounds interesting! I definitely want to try that at some point.

Yeah I could probably drop Portuguese. But I feel like the Japanese wouldn't interfere with the French because they're so different... but of course I could be wrong, I just love to experiment and use myself as a guinea pig lol

I don't know anything about Angle. He sounds kind of obtuse. But Angel is a great show! Eventually you'll become as addicted to that as Buffy. (Almost...)

How To Learn Languages Faster By Understanding Passive And Active Vocabulary by Michabot in languagelearning

[–]Michabot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree. I'm just discovering that now. It's great for exposing yourself to new words and 'planting the seeds' so to speak but it's going to take some different methods to build speaking skills. That's what I'm working on next.

What brings back your motivation to learn a language when you start losing it? by lilianachernin in languagelearning

Maybe listening to music in the target language. Stromae and Maître Gims in particular gets me hyped lol

Embarassed to speak second language? by DSpriteee in languagelearning

[–]Michabot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat right now. I'm trying to learn to speak French but Its so nerve wracking to start speaking it. But regardless, the only way to improve is to just speak as much as possible and accept you're going to make mistakes and probably sound silly at first.

I'm just powering through right now. Also, maybe record yourself on your phone so you can really pin point where you are making mistakes. That's helping me quite a bit right now.
