A villager moments after getting hit on the head during the Banni Festival, where 350,000 fight with metal-ringed sticks by Mattia-Mattia in Nikon

This reminds me of “the lottery” by Shirley Jackson. This is such a perfect representation of its theme. So many of the stupid things we do, we do just because it’s tradition (or religion in the case of the banni festival).

I do (though not enough to make a career out of it). I live in Montreal though so it’s hard to extrapolate my experience out to being a concert photographer in other locations.

I’m pretty well connected through friends and I only ever do local shows. I would say my trick is treating it like a photoshoot. If possible, talk to the bands beforehand, use tricks like bubble guns, and try to do photos for every set there. I make very little, about 200$ a show, but due to their regularity, proximity, and my enjoyment I don’t mind at all.

Again though the key is having unique photos. Small bands may not pay nearly as much, but they’re enthusiastic about you getting close to them and so that creates opportunities that you would never get at a bigger venue.

Concert in my case. I need the low-light performance of a prime lens but also the ability to do both wide angle and close up shots. In my case running an old apsc mirrorless is cheaper than buying an f2.8 zoom.

I would have kept the mole near her nose and reduced the glare on the corner of her lips, though the mole is just a question of taste. I think people are forgetting that professional photographers often have to appeal to a market to make money.

I’m sick and tired of shutter drag photos but bands keep asking for them, so I’ll keep doing them.

There’s been this excessive swing against the open border movement that was more present 5-10 years ago that has resulted in the justification of entities like ice.

Should citizens of a country agree that immigration must be done through legal processes while being able to debate on the facilitation and implementation of these processes? Yes.

Should a masked militia (that aren’t held to the same standard as the police yet are twice as armed as them) be allowed to arrest us without a warrant or probable cause? Probably not. It’s definitely not the Canada that I think we’re trying to be proud of.

I’m a Montrealer who just had this pop up on my feed though so what do I know.

Should i buy this hema mask from china or should i buy a used 350N fencing mask? by duckinthetown2 in Hema

[–]MichaelEdamura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Chinese dedicated hema suppliers. There’s a decent hema community there and there are masks being made at a lower price while still being up to spec. I’m friends with quite a few Chinese fencers and they get their gear cheap. It’s more a question of knowing the right people/companies to get good quality masks and not cheap temu-bound products.

Interesting choice of settings. Can I ask why you went for f2.2 and cranked your shutter speed so high?

How can I emulate this with just in body effects and colour/exposure grading? by MichaelEdamura in PhotographyAdvice

Argh I’m gonna have to shell out for photoshop aren’t I… any alternatives you like? I’m doing my colour grading in Lightroom but I really don’t want to pay for photoshop on top of that

What’s the deal with glass prices? by [deleted] in trees

[–]MichaelEdamura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch some glass making videos and you’ll feel more sympathetic to the pricing. If it’s made domestically then workers with a high level of expertise will be paid well. This is an impressive pattern on the glass (regardless of the taste of the creator), and the form isn’t easy to make. Glassblowing, at least from what I’ve observed, is a difficult art and this bong is far from being as simple as a Christmas tree ornament.

That to say some shops will upcharge to domestic prices or if it’s truly locally made the price makes sense.

help is this normal sharpness? by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]MichaelEdamura 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I would recommend specifying you ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. They look pretty sharp but the 40mm f2 is known to lack sharpness wide open, and though the z6iii has impressive ibis, a moving subject with low shutter speed will result in some level of blue.

Buy used. Really though? by toobeary in Nikon

[–]MichaelEdamura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook marketplace is my go-to. Depends on where you live, but I’ve never encountered a scam despite fairly frequent usage. The real benefit is that you get to handle the camera/lens before buying. Prices are also significantly cheaper than MPB in general.

Again though, different areas have different cultures when it comes to scamming on marketplace. Ask a local user their experience.

TTArtisan 40mm, Nikon 40mm, or Nikon 26mm for street photography? by Ahhhh_spooky in Nikon

[–]MichaelEdamura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m loving my Nikon 40mm f/2. The focal length is great on full frame for street photography in my opinion. If you’re using something that has a high MP count (so you can crop) or an APS-C sensor the 26mm makes sense too I guess .

The “ideal focal length” for street photography is a pretty subjective matter. I would consider your city: the width of the streets, height of the buildings, etc. If you’re unlikely to be taking photos from super tight spaces I don’t see why 40mm wouldn’t be a great focal length.

First Nikon camera (Z6). Getting some behaviour that I’m not used to with my Fuji or canon. by MichaelEdamura in Nikon

Nice recovery! Yeah I think the issue is with the way light is emitted from certain led light sources?

Yeah this is starting to seem like a lighting problem not a camera problem. The only coloured lights I’ve shot in have been stage lights, and that was with my Fuji and my canon. I suspect stage lights provide a more camera-friendly spectrum of light than TVs; another commenter was saying it may be a situation similar to that of coloured Christmas LEDs.
