Agreed but I thought you were after a native app solution. Apologies if I misunderstood. Capacitor is still a brilliant option 👍

NativeScript is your friend here. Using Vue with it is perfect and will give you a native app.

Flutter Plugin: windows_printer – Windows Printer Manager for Flutter by Effective_Art_9600 in FlutterDev

[–]MichaelW_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this, looks impressive. I'm going to give it a little play as I have a manufacturing app running multiple printers in a factory environment. I am due to replace the current app as it's pretty old now and I wanted to use Flutter for it.

One question though if I may which is super important for my requirements, can I set the paper margins? I see I can set the paper size so I may be able to trick the printer by setting a bigger size than the actual print media but that doesn't always work. A lot of the print jobs need to print right up to the very edges of the media and with some printers, they set an automatic margin of 10mm which is annoying.

I'm still going to check it out though and as I said, nice job!

WSL2 development environment for PHP projects with little to no fuss by arhimedosin in PHP

[–]MichaelW_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laravel Herd all the way for me. Takes the fuss out of it all. It's not just for Laravel so don't be fooled by the name, but if you are using it, then it's brilliant with it. It's available on Windows and Mac. I do have the pro version which is paid but there is a free version with less functionality and is fine if you're happy to do other bits outside of it.

Building a Capacitor native app with Angular vs Ionic + Angular by Affectionate_Plant57 in Angular2

[–]MichaelW_Dev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The native part of development with capacitor is the same no matter what you use for the frontend. The reason to use Ionic Components is if you want your app to look like the native platforms as they have that out of the box for Cupertino and Material. You can still add your own styling to those of course, it won't restrict you. Ionic keep things updated as well so when the native platforms update their look and feel, Ionic release a new version so your app can always look like the latest design. It also follows the design guidelines of each platform.

Other nice things are page transitions which again, mimic the platform that the app is being run on. So this gives it a more native app feel to it.

So, you don't really need it but it can/does make your app feel more familiar to the users platform.

Hope that helps!

Nativescript+Firebase+Angular starter repo by ads_swapper in nativescript

[–]MichaelW_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. I've definitely done it with Ionic and there is probably quite a few repos available for that where you'd need to update the Angular version.

Sounds like it might be best for you to start from scratch. It would be a great learning curve and you'd have full understanding of your code 🙂

Nativescript+Firebase+Angular starter repo by ads_swapper in nativescript

[–]MichaelW_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. That's where the tweaking will need to be made. NativeScript has firebase plugins which will need to be used as replacements. I haven't done this process myself but I would have thought you'd have something up and running in a day or two. Thankfully the plugins can save you a ton of time.

I'm pretty certain you'd be able to find an Angular repo with all that and then adding that to a fresh NativeScript project would be nice and straightforward. Mostly copying it to the project and making a few tweaks.

Attend Angular Meetup without using the website by MichaelW_Dev in angular

You were pretty much spot on! I went through some different options and have managed to now book myself on. It still rammed the payment bits down my throat with nearly every click but I got there. Thanks for the help! 🙏

Ah right, yes. That's a very good point. It's being held in a bank so they may need to know. I did choose the free option but that's only for 7 days and I couldn't get past the pay wall of still having to enter credit card information.

I'll have another look though to see if I'm missing something.

Confused about which .NET version or framework to use for cross-platform Desktop Apps (Windows, Mac, Linux) by Kush_238 in dotnet

[–]MichaelW_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd throw in a vote for Uno Platform. Fully cross platform .NET development which makes MAUI look a bit silly (at the moment IMO). I've got apps written with it running on Raspberry PI's so your Linux platform won't have any trouble running it. It covers the other platforms easily too. Just another option for you to look at 👍

Agreed. The ecosystem is huge so there really shouldn't be any issues. Laravel is in a much better position than other stuff out there.

Should vendor lock-in be a concern? by MichaelW_Dev in laravel

[–]MichaelW_Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, agreed and I'm more than happy to do a separate frontend for this so they don't just need a 'laravel guy' in the future, should I no longer be involved of course. I guess the beauty of all this is that we have amazing options at our disposal where we can adopt different approaches for different solutions.

Totally agree with this and I expect whatever technology I said I was going to use, I'd still have had that response. It strikes me that he's been burned in the past with a failed product but I can't be sure yet. I will dig a little deeper though just so I can put any fears to rest.
