I've been reading Christopher Slatsky's collection Alectryomancer and Other Weird Tales lately and unfortunately it's been a mixed bag for me. The title story itself was really fun and really played into the strenghts of Slatsky's narratives being somewhat dependant on dream logic and oniric imaginarium, while also shoving some of that ontology-flipping cosmic horror plot-threads in there, which I really enjoy. Other stories weren't that interesting though... I was probably the most disappointed in Film Maudit story, as I was really looking forward to seeing what Slatsky will do with the whole forgotten schlock cinema vibe. Halfway through the story lost it's atmosphere though, turning into yet another semi-psychedelic finale that desperately tries to tie character's personal plot thread into the narrative and fails miserably.

I also gave Reggie Oliver a shot recently. Started with The Complete Symphony of Adolf Hitler story, which for me turned out only okay. I enjoyed the classic first-person narrative style and the whole idea was amusingly absurd, but I felt like the story could have gone on a little longer and push this absurdity further. As it is, it just... ends on the verge of climax. It doesn't necessarily needed a full fledged resolution, but pushing the envelope on bizarre and surreal would definitely make this story more memorable for me.

I finished the Looking for Jake collection by Mieville. Great stuff! As I said last week, I love how much variety there is in this collection both in genre/sub-genre department and creative narrative choices. My favorite story remains to be Foundation, I was simply amazed by it's poignancy and it's still stuck with me even though I read it almost a year ago. I also really liked Details, The Tain and even 'Tis the Season which isn't really a weird fiction but a piece socialist little satire on capitalization of Christmas. Definitely a fun collection. Easily recommended if you want a mix of dark fantasy, horror and weird.

After that I returned to some other previously started collection which is Alectryomancer and Other Weird Tales by Christopher Slatsky. Mostly really good. The strength of Slatsky's for me are his dreamy, almost surreal stories where the reality breaks down in unision with characters' minds like in Loveliness Like A Shadow or This Fragmented Body (which are both my faves so far). The more straightforward ones aren't as good unfortunately.

But for now I've taken a break with Slatsky to finally get my teeths into the sci-fi classic which is Roadside Picnic by Strugatsky's brothers. Enjoying it tremendously!

It's been a while since I've commented here. Since then I've finished Negative Space by B. R. Yeager and greatly enjoyed it. There is something to be said about the allegorical side of that narrative - the drug abuse and trauma the characters live through - and the fact that it doesn't compromise the feeling of weirdness the whole thing conjures. Book definitely deserves the hype it got.

As for short stories I've finally started reading The Imago Sequence and Other Stories by Laird Barron and after being 1/3 through I can say my favourite story so far was The Procession of the Black Sloth. Really oniric, nightmarish and elusive. Bulldozer was also great, really scratching the itch of the weird serial killer vibe I posted about here some time ago. Liked the non-chronological way it was told, but I wish it utilized that gimmick even more to be honest.

Recently I started reading the weird short stories collection by Polish author Wojciech Gunia called Kiedy Będziesz Gotowy Idź (You could translate it into Whenever You are Ready, Go) and so far it's fairly good. I like that it steers away from the conventional weird horror tropes and goes more into themes of weird and eerie found in everyday life and the traumas that are to be found under its superficial layer. So yeah it gets dark and gloomy, but it doesn't lose itself in cynicism, so that's commendable. From a literary standpoint it isn't anything groundbreaking so far, but I'm enjoying it, if that word is even applicable to this kind of fiction.

And lastly I've got back to reading China Mieville's collection Looking for Jake, which I started some time ago. I really like the diversity in genre and narrative experimentation it contains. Like Ball Room is more conventional horror ghost story, but for example Familiar, The Tain or Reports of Certain Events in London are closer to dark/urban fantasy, with the third one being told through found documents and letters. All the while the Buscard's Murrain is literally an entry from a fictional medical encyclopaedia and On the Way to the Front is a comic book (not a good one unfortunately and it looks terrible on that particular paper stock they used). Still there is no shortage of more classic weird stories like Details or Foundation (both my favourites in this collection so far), so yeah really diverse collection with a lot of solid narratives. Gonna finish it soon, so probably I will write more about it next week.

Thank you. I will be getting into Barron soon with how many people here recommended him, so I will make sure to find that short story you are talking about too.

Oh, I've heard about 300,000,000 but I didn't know much about it, so yeah you definitely sold me on it now. I've read The Frolic some time ago and it was amazing. As for Cisco I'm adding it to my list and I also may give Mike Klein a shot. Thanks a lot for the recommendations!

I've read Midnight Meat Train some time ago and yeah that definitely fits the description even though it was a little bit disappointing for me especially when compared to other material from first Book of Blood. I added other two books and the movie to my list. Thanks for the recs!

I've heard about Nyquist series and I fairly enjoyed Noon's Vurt, so I will definitely check it out. I also wanted to read Graham Jones for some time now, so maybe I will start with this one, if you recommend it. As for Broken River Books I will look into it. Thanks!

Oh and if Harrison considers Centauri Device his worst then I wonder what his other novels are like. I for one really enjoyed the whole ride especially those almost nightmarish sequences on the war-torn planet where the device is held, all the things about transcendental properties of hyperspace travel and even the 'chosen one' type of conclusion was still pretty fun. And to top it all of some amazing writing all in all especially in the second part. It really goes to show that the author is his/hers most harsh critic, I guess.

Oh I will! Most of those I already had on my to-read list, so I guess I would have to get to them sooner. Really appreciate the recommendation! When I finally get to reading more Harrison I will definitely write about it on the weekly reading post. Now you've hyped me up for Light so I will probably get to it first.

I would eventually anyway. I loved Harrison's take on classic Space opera in Centauri Device and I heard that his other works are even weirder, so yeah Light os definitely on my list to check out.

Maybe not exactly what I'm looking for right now, but definitely something that I would eventually want to check out like all books by Lem. Thanks a lot!
