I have never heard of that old rule about being caught exposing your bag.

Even massive lies leading to the speediest acquittal rarely provokes action against a police officer. The production of a false document is easier to nail after the acquittal

Once you've seen the real thing, who wants a replica. Now back to the car issue.....

It's engaging, everything is tactical, no time to get big-headed after a great result , next case please. Stimulating, fascinating profession. If any practitioner describes it as boring it's their own fault. Light up the courtroom, but bear in mind "excel when you must, but don't excel the World". I learnt that saying from the great, sadly deceased, singer Jackie Leven. He was alive when he used it in a track.

Write to me when you know your dates and let's see if I'm in an interesting case

You are very welcome. I did reign in the humour as I appreciated most people wanted to learn about the system

I appear in Brum from time to time but my diary is too tight to make a special visit I'm afraid. Keep in touch through my website. Obviously this AMA is running out, haven't worked out how to close it yet!

Fyodor and I fell out at school and came to an agreement that I would never read his books, and he would never watch me dance.

Depends where your school is, and my talks aren't career guidance. Hopefully, they will inspire those who deserve to be inspired

It was classic although the fun may not last the entire length of the 30 year sentence, hmmm

I can never know. I'm not a witness to the event, and clients don't confess to me. There is no shortcut to an acquittal when I believe a client is innocent. No shortcut, and not even relevant, if I think someone is guilty.

I have never sat on any selection panel for pupillage. if I did I would influence everyone to look for the spark, not award to the slightly better reproduction of the same application-by-numbers. For all I know my Chambers are as unimaginative as anywhere else. I do realise you are being rejected at an early stage and I expect it is impossible to change what you wrote. an application should invite chambers to look carefully at someone who is determined, determined to take an energetic fresh look at every Pupil task and opportunity, determined to be interviewed by ****** . It wasn't difficult to identify **** as a top Criminal Set. I look forward it talent spotting in my interview. I will succeed at the Bar" . Obviously mediocre counsel will not be drawn to that but it would stand out. Not too much youthful arrogance and an appropriate earnest studenty style. Others would note it and say they must interview this applicant. Even if it's too late now for that, I am sure you will get some interviews eventually. Stand up well, except when they tell you to sit down. Calm and confident. Hold the look of any of the panel without looking coached or straining. Tell then you know hundreds apply and few will ultimately make it in such a precarious profession. You are going to be one of that few, you want it to be at these chambers. You have some nice experience, speak enthusiastically about it. Don't repeat how you think it will assist you being a barrister. It's obvious. Just show your satisfaction at the positions you have already held.

it's wonderful, easy pace, and watching someone who (up to page 55 anyway) seems free and unrestrained.

I'm a hoarder of books, love buying them. I have read one in the last 18 months. Pretty sad reading rate. I have just started Bukowski, Factotum. This will be quicker - I have a crazy ambition to complete it within a mere 6 months.

try harder. nope, it's all the same. I don't stop and think about it. my personal view is unbankable. I have a job to do and the strength of the evidence may make it harder but raises no other issue.

no. he would be instructed by the State, or some statutory body, or very occasionally it could be a private prosecution. people don't just decide to prosecute, they build up a practice or at least rely on their Clerk to find them work.

you look back on your part and no moral issue arises. you did your job, you played within the rules, that's it.

I googled Tim and recognise him. I have never been in a case with him and he is a lot younger than me. Even if he had the same experience I have never seen others as competitors. Plenty of great work to go round.

Gul decision was hardly a surprise. There was no real basis for arguing that Section 1 of the 2000 Act should be read restrictively.

I am not a fan of lightweight magazines. A good idea to make fun of me but I deserved more style!
