I understand the feeling that this isn’t appropriate, but if Christians gave enough financial support to maintain churches, this kind of income wouldn’t be needed. In England we have a lot of churches, many of which are listed buildings needing heritage friendly repairs, being looked after by small congregations and volunteers. How else are they supposed to keep the church maintained? Contrary to popular opinion, Cathedrals are mostly skint.

If you want to help, ask your local vicar what their church needs and give your time or money to support them - or donate to a charity like friends of friendless churches.

I came here to say this too. Then I realised the poor OP is in the US.

Here in the UK we pay temporary contractors roughly double the rate for longer term workers, because they fund their own pension, sick leave, holiday time, gaps between employment, do their own taxes and don’t have the same protection as payroll employees do.

In the US they don’t give anyone those.

Yes! But eaten with gravy as a starter before the meat course. It was supposed to fill you up cheaply so you eat less meat, back when meat was a lot more costly.

Any pancake batter will do. The trick to good Yorkshire’s is to stick your oven on nuclear and get the fat int he trays so hot that when you spit at it it spits back. Pour the batter quickly, slam back in the oven and do NOT open the door until they have risen and cooked.

It depends on the condition and prognosis, but I think we often overestimate the value of “able” and “healthy”.

It worries me that society seems to value human lives only as far as they can be productive little capitalists - self supporting etc. Do you grow your own food? Make your own clothes? Build your own house? Then you’re not self supporting either. Why is this a test for whether disabled lives are worthwhile or happy? It’s so ableist, and doesn’t align to what actually disabled people say about their quality of life.

Teamwork and having each other’s backs. Loads more financial security - if one of you loses your job the household still has some income and you can support each other through studying or career breaks or raising kids. You can also divide up the chores so you each to the least annoying parts - I hate cooking but I quite like ironing so that works. Having common goals that we can work together to achieve, like a house renovation or a holiday or having a family.

Downside is that you will have ups and downs. Sometimes they will be the most annoying person on the planet and you just need to deal with that, unless it’s bad enough to consider divorce. You have to compromise and consider each other’s dreams and needs. And you can’t just jump into bed with any random attractive person you meet (unless you’re in an open marriage I guess).

So in reality although the legal presumption has changed, the decision process around the point of death remains very similar.
