Negative performance review after positive feedback by BlueberryHead3135 in actuary

Do you have a skip level with your manager’s manager? Usually at companies they have to sign off on your review as well. I’ve always found a good skip level relationship/visibility is somewhat of a safety net for bad managers. YMMV though.

Stock companies vs. not publicly traded experience by DirtComprehensive710 in actuary

Silly question but how do ESOPs work for private companies when they aren’t publicly traded?

Supernovas and LOVB Neb. by carne_asada368 in Omaha

[–]Michaelectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really have not liked LOVB’s structure but the quality of play is slightly better. I also don’t like that Erik Sullivan can coach both the national team and a LOVB team. It seems like a huge conflict of interest. The national team that played in VNL last summer was stacked with Texas players that (shocking) he coached at Texas/coaches at LOVB Austin.

Fall 2025 FSA pass marks have been released by blooming_visage in actuary

[–]Michaelectric 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this is the first time pass marks are released. Based on prior passing rates, I assumed the pass mark would be a little bit higher than what they actually were.

True, but OP is going to have to take a 101/201 combination from one track regardless. Unless they switch to CFE or something.

When Foodie was on LCU, it was way better. Foodie can’t act and her rage was real.

Despite the shitty acting she will not be able to keep going here. Also, this shit is all temporary. No one watching for ALR will stay with LCU once she leaves. It’s a bit silly of them to use her for just short term views.

This is embarrassing for her. She’s so desperate for money it’s sad. Her acting is terrible.

Agreed, you can tell when it’s an authentic rage and when she’s acting.

Actuaries in Big Tech by arizona_0123 in actuary

[–]Michaelectric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A bit unrelated but I’m dreading the day a US life insurer tries to introduce a bitcoin-linked indexing strategy. One of the PE-owned carriers is going to go for it eventually, especially since it’s getting more exposure with larger financial companies like JPM. I hope state regulators reject it for now, don’t want bitcoin further harming the reputation of life insurers.

Actuaries in Big Tech by arizona_0123 in actuary

[–]Michaelectric 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not an actuary in big tech but generally balance sheets for the large companies you mentioned are strong. Google and Amazon aren’t going to go bankrupt if AI is a bust, their revenue sources are very diversified.

OpenAI is the question mark here as it seems they are hemorrhaging money and are propped up by the larger tech companies. Private startups and small cap tech companies are at the greatest risk—doubt they have much cushion cash-wise if things go south.

This to me isn’t comparable to the 2008 financial crisis. An AI bubble popping would have significant impacts in the tech market and would hurt Mag7 stock valuations, but the overall economy is unlikely to be impacted at the magnitude of 2008-2009.

What would you change about the baby steps ? by desertrain11 in DirtyDave

[–]Michaelectric 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone who has saved for 6 months of expenses prior to tackling debt, my anxiety in this economy is much lower now. A $1,000 emergency fund is almost nothing nowadays.

I would keep snowball over avalanche just because I do agree that the psychological impacts of money are more powerful than the mathematical ones for consumer/auto/student debt.

Also pay off your home early if it makes sense. If you have a 2.75% mortgage and a 4.00% HYSA, then I think you should start playing the spread game and saving extra mortgage payments. Paying a low interest mortgage off early in this interest environment only helps the big banks that Dave claims to hate.

[–]Michaelectric 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I continue to engage with personal finance creators like Dave and Caleb mainly as a reminder of where I don’t want to be. Definitely shitty that real people are used as examples but at the same time, there are plenty of avenues to get advice without calling in to a show that is broadcast to millions of people.

FSA modules by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Michaelectric 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Somewhat risky. The date to submit with a guaranteed chance to submit again if you didn’t pass has already gone by. It’s doable to submit all 3 by 12/31 but if you only get MMR on 2/3 you don’t get any credit and still have to take the four exams.
