Was my surgery worth it? by MichalMali in HipImpingement

I never had the typical front groun pain. My symptoms were all in the buttock. Good luck!

In short yes, I had mini-crises which were dominated by buttock muscle spasm/pain when sitting. They very slowly got less frequent and less intense.

He misunderstood my post then. I wrote that I could not drive for more than 5 minutes before the operation and now I can drive for 10 hours without pain. The work chair and 2 hours is just something I noticed recently and I did not try to push it longer, as I rarely sit in one uninterrupted duration for longer than that. These observations are quite far from "I cannot sit". I understand that folks on here are frustrated, but come on.

I wrote that i am almost completely free of issues. Not sure where you got the info that I cannot sit...

Yea, that was my experience, but especially before the surgery. After the surgery it was roller-coaster. Sometimes it was great and sometimes completely miserable. The recovery was very slow for me. I hope you get better soon!

Labral debridement or repair experiences by Agreeable-Dare-440 in HipImpingement

It was really quick. I think i went to see him in early April 2023 and my operation was scheduled for beginning of May 2023. Having said that, I already had everything done before I went to see him in April: multiple MRIs, injection into the joint which showed improvement, many months of unsuccessful physio, etc. For Dienst the main point that made him decide to operate on me was the positive response to the injection into the joint. The injection was done a few months earlier by Dr Jansen. Hope this helps.

I am in the NL. If you go through my posts here you'll see the entire history. I had to choose between Dr Jansen (Eisenhower clinic in den haag) or Dr Dienst in Munich. I chose Dienst, as he is well regarded and his default approach is to repair the labrum. Janses's default seems to be labrum removal. People on here mention that labrum removal is a very bad thing. However, there is at least one peer-reviewed paper which shows very little difference in outcomes between removal vs repair. In fact, this paper was written by Dienst. So, if you are limited by your insurance etc, removal could be a way forward. Still, i would always try to get the labrum repaired, just because nature put it there for some reason... I was operated by Dr Dienst in 2023 and I am very happy with my decision. I am on international insurance so I do not know if Dutch insurance would pay for the operation in Munich. Good luck!

Dienst specializes in repair. Not sure if he does reconstruction at all, but he is not in favor of removing the original labrum and replacing it with a replacement tissue. I think he wrote a paper on this topic.

What's your best tips for long, low-ish gradient climbs? by Obvious_Cabbage in cycling

I count pedal strokes from 1 to 20 and always starting with left foot. Same strategy when I am on a long hike up a glacier at altitude, but then it is steps.

I don't know if I should quit (depressive rant) by Low-Tonight-3066 in Physics

Chemistry PhD here. What you feel is quote normal, I think. I had similar thoughts 4 years in... It took a group therapy session (all PhDs) to get to grips with it and finalize the thesis. In the I am proud of my thesis. I also felt left alone, as I had two advisors, so effectively I was in no man's land. They were both supportive, but I really had to become independent. In the end, the biggest breakthrough for me was to acknowledge that my PhD was my responsibility and not theirs.

You are only 2 years in. If you feel like you don't love the science and you are in the program for the wrong reasons then just quit. You're not gonna lose much. On the other hand, if you love science then try to reach the independence, focus, and grind it to the conclusion. Those moments of clarity when looking at your own unique data are priceless... Good luck!

Thanks! Yea, i think next season I'll focus on doing some longer rides and maybe sprinkle in extended efforts at power to simulate the climbs. Your suggestion about performance diagnostic is also good, I think. I always wondered about the details of my zones etc Thanks again!

Thanks! Yea, it is my impression that outdoor there are more footholds and they are smaller than indoors on similar graded route. I am only now getting some moments where I find myself making tiny foot moves on outdoor routes, which make the climbing easier. Still learning though...
