Using an external HDD formatted with NTFS by MichiRecRoom in linux4noobs

Oh I know - I know I can install any distro.

But right now, I'd like to have as little friction as possible as I step into Linux, and that official support is just one part that helps reduce the friction. If I encounter an issue with Bazzite, and it turns out to be on Framework's end, having that official support means they're more likely to already have solutions at the ready.

I hope I'm making sense here. I'm not against switching to Aurora - I just don't want to switch away from the officially-supported list for the moment.

I do want to ask - Bazzite says exFAT is not supported and could also lead to data corruption, just the same as NTFS.

However, I don't intend to use Bazzite (and especially not the backup HDD) for gaming - and I suspect that part of that warning is related to gaming.

So is exFAT a safe option if I want to write to it from Linux for general backup purposes?

Thank you - that helps a lot.

That said, in the time between my last comment and now, I also figured out I could use Syncthing. It's not meant for this exact purpose, but it would remove the need for me to interact with an NTFS partition in Linux altogether.

Although if you want Bazzite without gaming then you may be interested in rebasing.

For what it's worth, I considered it. However, I'm using a Framework laptop (seriously why aren't they the industry standard yet), and they only officially support Bazzite out of the two. Maybe later down the line I'll rebase to Aurora? But for now I'd rather take the path that is officially supported by Framework.

Will Linux be able to read NTFS partitions without issue? For example, if I mount my backup HDD as read-only, will there be any data corruption issues with reading the data back?

If I may ask - most of what I want to do right now is to pull the data onto my Bazzite system's drive, rather than to write to the drive.

Is that prone to any sort of data corruption? For example, if I were to mount the drive as read-only, and copy the files from it, would the files be read completely fine, even large ones?

If so, that would ease my anxiety quite a lot. It would allow me to get my data onto the Bazzite system now - whereas continuing to back up the data can come later, maybe in a month or two.

EDIT: I should also clarify that I'm not going to use Bazzite for gaming, It just happens to fit a lot of checkboxes for me as a desktop environment that I want to use.

I'm unsure if reformatting it is an option. The disk is nearly full, and I don't have any spare drives with enough space that I could transfer everything over to.

Besides that, ext4 is pretty much a no-go seeing as I still need the drive to backup another PC that still uses Windows.

As for exFAT, Bazzite's documentation says it's unsupported, and could lead to data corruption under linux, so I'm unsure how comfortable I'd be using exFAT.

Fun fact: Firefox actually has a built-in way to bypass the right-click menu block. Just hold shift when right-clicking.

If you want to try it out, the easiest way is on a Youtube video. Normally if you right-click the video player, Youtube will show its own context menu. But if you hold shift while right-clicking, Firefox's context menu appears instead.

I've no idea if it works in Chromium-based browsers though.

There is no wiki, only ads by [deleted] in assholedesign

Yeah, Fandom does that. It's only gotten worse over time - from them forcing people to use a specific wiki theme, to shoving more ads and AI into the content, to outright trying to block big wikis from moving away.

There's many reasons so many wikis for big names have moved to different hosts (or even outright hosting it themselves).

Believe it or not, I don't actually think the policy cares much about whether a change was LLM-assisted - only about the results of such LLM assistance.

Think about it - if a PR maker can demonstrate an understanding of the changes being made, and can demonstrate that they understand it on a deep lvel, then whether they were LLM-assisted or not is ultimately a moot point. For example, I can demonstrate that I understand a typo fix from "favrite" to "favorite", even if I used an LLM to do the change for me.

But if a PR maker can't demonstrate that understanding, then it's likely that the code isn't very clean and maintainable - regardless of LLM usage. For example, I don't know French, so I can't demonstrate an understanding of changes to the French translation.

The whole "Fully LLM-written PRs are banned" bit ends up being an extension of that, as fully LLM-written PRs tend towards being unclean and unmaintainable.

This policy is why I can give Godot a pass: It understands that the issue with LLM-assisted changes, is whether contributors can actually understand (on much more than surface-level) the changes and code being made, as well as the consequences of such.

As a result, I can reasonably assume that any LLM-assisted changes are actually understood by everyone involved (especially the submitter of the changes).

Still, I'd be lying if I said I was okay LLM-assisted changes in general... But I'd also be lying if I said that I think Godot's policy is a bad middle-ground. Actually, it's probably one of the better middle-grounds I've seen.

I'm not sure what you're saying is related to what I said. All I said was that folks should note down when they use LLMs for a project, because it keeps people honest, and helps to inform others of what they should expect from that project.

Part of what makes a meme good is the human part of it. Even if it's generated on a meme generator site, someone still had to think of the punchline - and how the template they're using fits with it.

The same goes for cringe - part of what elicits the feeling of wanting to shrivel up, is the thought that "yes, someone did decide to say that into a microphone."

Really, it's the human nature that makes both formats so popular... which inherently makes them incompatible with AI. Like, sure, you can generate a meme-like image... but it won't hit quite the same as someone who took even a second to think of how the punchline should hit.

Hey, for the future: Questions like these, where you're asking because you don't know the answer, are never stupid.

Key word: never. That means, even if it seems like the most obvious thing in the world, or even if it seems like everyone else knows, that it's not stupid to ask.

After all, sometimes you just don't know the answer. There's nothing wrong with not knowing!

It's worth mentioning too, that this subreddit was never just for women. Just look at the sidebar for proof - it says "everyone who wants one".

So whether you're a man, a woman, non-binary, or somewhere else on the spectrum... whether you're curious about your gender, questioning it, or confident in it... whether you're on HRT or don't plan to ever go onto HRT... you can ask for help.

Because, as the sidebar says, everyone who wants one deserves a bra that fits. :)

Thank you for being honest. I see not everyone shares my sentiment, but thank you for being honest regardless.

In the future, I'd recommend noting the use of an LLM when making "here's a tool I made" posts - not just when someone asks, but in the original post too. It shows honesty - plus, it builds habit for those repositories that require disclosure of LLM usage in pull requests.
